Apologies if there is another thread on this. Couldn't see one.

Thoughts?

The thing that shocked me was the morphine. I know Jean was forging prescriptions but how did no one pick that up? It seemed a bit brushed over in the programme. I know the NHS stopped prescribing them she'd just turn up to the Harrods pharmacy and get loads of heroin? Surely any qualified pharmacist would wonder why she was stockpiling so much? I couldn't even buy eye ointment in Boots the other day because my optician told me to get it for a scratched cornea and it was for conjunctivitis. I had to get him to write me a note!

I had to " see the doctor" to get a repeat for an ear spray! Layer upon layer of dodgy stuff revealed.
I feel sad for Meg's contemporaries.

It was all so bizarre, she’d clearly had a brain shunt - why?

She obviously did have some medical issues. It’s incredibly rare to die suddenly aged 23. There must have been something else to it, for her friends to have seen all the hospital visits etc

I feel so sad for Will

Worriedmummy1244 · 07/06/2026 22:17

Also I’ve just read that she died in a neurosurgical hospital?!!?!

Lentilcakes · 07/06/2026 23:04

Dh and I binged it today. I came in and he was watching so I joined in. We were both - WTAF! I missed the first episode so may go back and watch that.
The male friend of Megs was in total denial - what?

labtest57 · 08/06/2026 06:47

I had contact with Believe in Magic when my then 4 year old was on treatment for leukaemia. We were invited to the party at Hamleys but turned it down as we lived too far north and travelling to London was expensive. When they started raising money for Megs treatment, a friend of ours, whose child had received gifts from them, donated his funeral collection to Megs appeal, and continued to raise funds in excess of 10,000!! They are absolutely scum to take the money from a grieving family. Not sure to what extent Meg was complicit, but she certainly knew she wasn't in hospital in Florida when Jean was claiming she was!!

I got the impression she was addicted to morphine. She basically had a dodgy heart but that could have been caused by the vast amount of drugs she had been given.

Shrinkhole · 08/06/2026 07:26

She had BIH benign intracranial hypertension they said in the documentary hence the shunt. The symptoms are similar to a brain tumour so she will have perhaps been under investigation for a tumour at one point.

The main risk factor is obesity and note she also had fatty liver when she died.

It is a painful condition so she may have been legitimately prescribed morphine for that to start with but the shunt should have been effective so that it was no longer required.

BIH definitely doesn’t kill you.

so essentially she did have a real condition at one point requiring surgery and painkillers and they may have been told at one point that it could be a brain tumour until that was ruled out with scans. It seems likely that Jean loved the attention that her child being sick and in hospital got and so she maintained that and that Meg became addicted to morphine. That in itself will make you very ill and shorten your life. It’s not different to herion addiction. She could easily have died of an OD deliberately or accidentally

A brilliant documentary that sheds light on the dubious nature of the charity involved. But the way it ended is so sad, and to my mind remains suspicious.

bafta16 · 08/06/2026 08:11

Poor Will, he seems vulnerable. I wondered about the morphine addiction too.

That’s an interesting instagram account. She obviously thinks of herself as an older influencer, with no remorse about her previous actions.

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2026 09:09

I just found it all so sad. Some people are just so good at conning others.

Thank you for your post. 💐 How is your dc now? Your poor friend being conned out of so much money too- it’s just beyond words. Bad enough conning people, but to con people going through the worst thing imaginable is lower than all lows.

My daughter is 19 now and absolutely fine, thank you

SecretSquirrelSect · 08/06/2026 10:59

I keep thinking back to the pics of her in hospital with a weird thing stuck to her head.

In many years of exposure to hospitals, Healthcare etc I have never seen anything like it and it wasn't where a shunt would be located.

Anyone trained able to offer an opinion?

That has made me feel furious. Smug and surgically enhanced.

Can't believe nobody has trolled that account following the documentary - or maybe she is very quick to delete. I'm not a troll or I'd be all over it!

I believe that Jean was so manipulative & controlling to Meg that Meg would have believed anything she told her, like being in a cohersive controlling relationship. Meg was also very childlike, as if Jean wouldn't let her grow up

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2026 12:07

The other lady they interviewed said she was brainwashed by her mum and this what Jean did as well to poor Meg. Such a tragic life to have. She probably wasn’t aware of how bad her mum was.

Yes

I don’t think so, it’s a different name and she looks very different. Her hair is thicker.
