Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

I’ve not watched any of it but saw the Christmas Special and really liked it.

If it’s not considered good then I’m dying now to binge watch the series!

Amanda was actually my least favourite character in Motherland which is why I’d not previously bothered.

Do love Joanna Lumley in anything, right enough .

Yep, this is what made it so funny for us. I went for a paper this morning and in the corner shop was a woman in skirt and wellies braying about the turnout for the Boxing Day hunt - I just know her hound is allowed to snaffle pâté.

It's the best new thing that's been on over Xmas for me.

"Braying" 🤣

It was good! The reveal about the photo was hilarious.

🤣🤣 Mick jagger was cousin Rosamund 🤣🤣🤣 hilarious.

AddictedtoStarmix · 27/12/2025 18:49

I enjoyed it. Had a genuine belly laugh when Anne faceplanted the pavlova!!
Enjoyed Two Doors Down and Call the Midwife too. Despite the obvious virtue signalling from both.
2025 hasn't been the easiest year for my family, so enjoyed every familiar, obvious plot lines, humour so comforting and grounding.
Social media reels and feeds have conditioned so many people into needing the constant dopamine spikes, that our expectations have been elevated to an unrealistic exponential level, that unless something is 100% perfect, it's shit.
To feel 'Gutted' that a Christmas episode didn't meet your hopes and expectations is a real privilege.

TitsInAbsentia · 27/12/2025 19:08

I enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing...however JS can do zero wrong in my eyes! Mother liked it though so have recommended she goes from the start of motherland.

52inJan · 27/12/2025 19:13

This thread shows how hard it is to please everyone! We loved Motherland but couldn't even get past the first Amandaland episode. Jennifer Saunders is the only reason I'll watch the Xmas special, and I'll probably have to watch alone as DH doesn't fancy it.

SingaporeSlinky · 27/12/2025 19:17

I found it boring and too long. Mal and the kids might as well have not been in it. Ann was just stupid and we’ve had the joke of her naming all the Pat relatives before. Hide and seek pointless.

A few vaguely funny lines but that’s all. Disappointed.

Iamthemoom · 27/12/2025 19:28

We really enjoyed it and I’m usually hyper critical of these Xmas specials!

YouOKHun · 27/12/2025 19:39

@AddictedtoStarmix I know exactly what you mean about comforting TV that doesn’t stir anything too much when real life has dished up very difficult things. However “gutted” is just a word used to describe all sorts of disappointments and its use in this context not as a sign of others’ failure to recognise their own privilege or that they’ve had an easier time than the next person. It really is just about the programme.

Twitch1994 · 27/12/2025 20:06

I was really excited for it, was busy telling my husband how good it was etc and was left feeling very disappointed. Whole thing felt a bit rushed and flat for me (though I did very much enjoy Jennifer Saunders character!).

Kibble19 · 27/12/2025 20:08

Only watching this now. Really not that great, mostly misses the mark for me, unfortunately.

It’s a shame as I love Motherland (and did mostly enjoy Amandaland).

Yeah and I was musing that if Julia had dogs, I don't think we ever saw them?

Yes - this has been bothering me too! Surely we'd have seen the dogs at some point on the school run or in scenes in the house or on the cottage trip?! And we'd have heard Julia complain about how she was the one left to walk the dogs while Paul gadded about?! I think that was a bit of a continuity fail which I can forgive as I endlessly rewatch these episodes and love them all.

Wearescrewed · 27/12/2025 20:33

I loved it. I don’t think it’s reasonable to say you don’t find it funny because you don’t know who Mick Jagger is 🙄he’s pretty well known as the lead singer of one of the most famous bands in the world ! And the same era as Joanna Lumley .
I do prefer Motherland though but getting all those actresses together schedule wise must be challenging so I understand why they’ve done this spin off. Thank god Anne is still in it though!

MoonWoman69 · 27/12/2025 20:44

Too short, so there was no meat on the bones of either Amandaland or Two Doors Down. I expected more personally!

Ariel896 · 27/12/2025 20:59

We just watched and so disappointed! DH hooting with laughter but he’s also drinking 🤷‍♀️

Catlover77 · 27/12/2025 20:59

Motherland = excellent
Amandaland = good
amandaland Xmas = dire

Very contrived. Zero laughs in this house

Aluna · 27/12/2025 21:03

Motherland was excruciating. Unwatchable.

LubyLooTwo · 27/12/2025 21:09

Amandaland is shite anyway let alone the xmas special

Ilovelblue · 27/12/2025 21:43

ThankYouNigel · 25/12/2025 22:03

I just so much prefer ‘Motherland’. It was hilarious! I found Julia so funny in that, and really miss her in the ‘Amandaland’ spin offs generally. I also miss Liz and Kevin.

I'm with you on that. Motherland was hilarious and although Amandaland is ok, it's not a patch on Motherland at all.

blanketsnuggler · 27/12/2025 21:54

Anne in the pavlova at the end did make me laugh though. Otherwise I found it a bit disappointing.

There’s a few examples of continuity issues in Motherland.

In the Mothers Day episode, Kevin and Liz go to his mum’s grave and he says he was eight when she died. Then in the episode where Amanda tells him that she and Johnny have been having threesomes, he says his mum lives near the place the other guy is from.

Maddy70 · 27/12/2025 22:16

I thought it was great!

TeaRoseTallulah · 28/12/2025 00:06

I loved it, really made me chuckle especially the whole storyline about Amanda's possible father .

anon666 · 28/12/2025 00:45

I thought it was great. Not seeing your point.
