Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

I prefer Amandaland to Motherland and
wish it could have been an hour long Xmas special to develop it all a bit more

Doubledenim305 · 26/12/2025 23:53

Watched it again tonight I loved it so much.. laughed even more tonight. Hilarious.

Bloodyscarymary · 26/12/2025 23:59

we really enjoyed it and so wonderful to see Patsy & Eddie back together - the “have some deviled egg darling egg egg egg” was very AbFab coded. My only complaint was that it was too short! Felt like it should have been an hour to flesh out the plot - eg the sisters making up - needed more lead up to be believable as a dramatic moment. But other than that, it was fun and we laughed!

I found it very disappointing.

So did I.

Agree- 30 mins was too short.

Dartmoorcheffy · 27/12/2025 00:16

Me and DP lived it. Very funny.

I’ve thought maybe I should watch it again and see if I’ve missed some jokes. . Still excited for season two though!

Loved it too. Wasn't expecting Oscar worthy performances though.

Heyhelga · 27/12/2025 00:27

BBC can't seem to do anything right at the moment. No wonder it's viewing figures are tumbling.

KookyHen · 27/12/2025 00:44

Have now caught up on it with DH. Definitely wasn’t as good as the regular Amandaland episodes, but we both lost it at Anne faceplanting the pavlova 🤣

MeganM3 · 27/12/2025 00:50

I thought it was good! It was a lighthearted laugh. One off Christmas specials are tricky because they don’t have to depth of a series and all the build up from previous episodes. There’s about 30 mins to make you chuckle while eating snacks on the sofa. Mission accomplished.

GellerYeller · 27/12/2025 09:44

Testament to the acting skills of Lumley and Saunders that I forgot Ab Fab completely, until, as PP said, ‘devilled egg, darling’. Lovely stuff.

Indigovelvet · 27/12/2025 11:04

Had been looking forward to it but didn't think it was very funny .. that angst kind of humour. Nice to see Joanna and Jennifer though.

Doubledenim305 · 27/12/2025 13:44

Just depends on your sense of humour. Personal taste differs. I found it much more funny than Amandaland the series. So yeah people just find different things funny.

Newsdog · 27/12/2025 14:23

We found it very funny. Hadn’t seen any build up so didn’t know JS was going to be in it so that was a nice surprise.
Also we have a family friend who is definitely an ‘Aunt Joan’ even down to the way she walked and the facial expressions so we were crying at the giblet covered apron and ‘hot cockles! hot cockles!’
I don’t get what was disappointing about it.

I loved it, very funny. I wish I had a mad rich aunt in the Cotswolds to go and stay with.

Same!

We enjoyed it, it didn't have loads of laugh out loud moments but neither does Amandaland really but it was nice and better than fucking Mrs browns boys, how the hell is that still on tv

I agree with this.

bignewprinz · 27/12/2025 17:47

Another here who loved it. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer.

I just didn’t find it remotely funny - none of it.
mildly entertaining at best but the characters seemed to have really lost their quirks compared to the series.
Anne faceplanting the pavlova was supposed to be hilarious but it didn’t make me laugh.
Dunno, just felt lacking.
I do like JS but she seems to play the same sort of scatty eccentric character in everything I’ve seen her in - I liked her in this but it really just didn’t tickle me.

Mummadeze · 27/12/2025 17:58

I thought it was brilliant and laugh out loud funny. JS played her part so well, her house was so posh and gross at the same time. Amanda’s character is so brilliantly written and acted too. Am just so happy there is a good comedy i actually look forward to around now. They are so few and far between.

WonderfulSmith · 25/12/2025 22:56

I really liked it, but then I know people exactly like Jennifer Saunders’ character.

Yep, this is what made it so funny for us. I went for a paper this morning and in the corner shop was a woman in skirt and wellies braying about the turnout for the Boxing Day hunt - I just know her hound is allowed to snaffle pâté.

It's the best new thing that's been on over Xmas for me.

I messaged my mum to recommend she watched it. She recognised a number of women she knows in the character.

curiositykilledthiscat · 26/12/2025 08:18

I know the second series is currently filming and I hope different writers are involved.

Jennifer was much like a lot of characters she has played, which I found really dull.

Yes - like I said, her casting was a lazy and boring decision.

@curiositykilledthiscat yep, completely agree. JS does a very good eccentric posho and I am sure she was at the top of the casting director’s list for this but it was too obvious. I think Motherland was a much stronger idea and not hinged on one character. I liked the first series of Amandaland but not sure it has enough substance for an out of context Christmas special. Christmas specials are often disapppointing I guess.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 27/12/2025 18:15

I don't think its a comedy classic but we all enjoyed it - although to be fair we had just watched the All creatures Christmas special beforehand and that was appalling so a rerun of Mr Ben would have seemed like a comedy spectacular after that.

FlorianTV · 27/12/2025 18:28

I didn’t mind it, but I don’t think it was a true reflection of Ann. I don’t think she’d have getting drunk without her family or kids, she absolutely adores her family.

I can’t believe they’ve chosen it over motherland.
