The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

Omg I remember those blue Peter time capsules!!!! Peter Purves with his long hair 🤣

They didn’t dig it up in 2000 though, long before that as I recall.

nhgto · 25/01/2026 20:45

Something that stuck with me was the woman who had HG. From suffering awfully with it myself as no medication helped. I can’t remember who but they said to dr turner isn’t there anything that can help and he said after the thalmodie babies there never will be help again (or something like that) there’s tons of medication now they give for HG to try, as far as I’m aware, nothing like thalmodie has ever happened since. Poor woman, I really get emotional when I see a woman with hg on the show because it’s so horrific! 😢

Fatfreefatball · 25/01/2026 20:51

@NimbleHiker yes I'd go back to the 70's in a shot!

I wouldn't. Living through it once was enough.

Yes that was a very strange comment. There are many medications used for N&V in pregnancy now! I can’t work out why they had Dr T say that with such earnest conviction.

NimbleHiker · 25/01/2026 20:58

I enjoyed it tonight.

I suppose that's what he would have believed at the time. He wouldn't know what would be available now. There was nothing available for me in 1979.

Yes, I thought it was rather incongruous for one of Dr Turner's wise prophecies to be something that turned out to be so very wrong. He's usually eerily skilled at "knowing" things that couldn't possibly have been foretold in the 1970s.

NotMyRealAccount · 25/01/2026 21:05

I had to have a little snigger at Lady Trixie of the Forceps giving Rosalind a telling off for overstepping her boundaries.

NimbleHiker · 25/01/2026 20:11

Sister monica joan is back.

There to say something thoughtful and profound of course 😍

NotMyRealAccount · 25/01/2026 21:10

And although AB- is uncommon, Eileen could have had rhesus negative blood of any ABO group, there was no need to go looking for her one living relative. That bit of storyline shouldn't have made it through the wide mesh plausibility filter.

Needmorelego · 25/01/2026 21:12

All those kids (the Cubs, the Turner lot) would have been about late 30s/early 40s in the Year 2000. I wonder how disappointed they were to not have flying cars and robot doctors 😂

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/01/2026 21:15

Well, I'm 64 and I'm absolutely gutted that we're not moving about with jetpacks. I'm sure Tomorrow's World promised that we'd have them yonks ago. Harrumph.

Poor Agata. That was grim.

NotMyRealAccount · 25/01/2026 21:17

Around the same time as the time capsule, was there a Blue Peter competition to draw pictures of things we thought would exist in the Year 2000 (flying cars and the like) or am I slotting that in from another corner of my memory bank? I do remember time capsules, and another class in my primary school making one and telling the rest of us about the contents in a school assembly.

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/01/2026 21:19

I'm wondering if my Cubs would get so excited about a Time Capsule... I'm going to suggest it.

RenoDakota · 25/01/2026 21:20

This has just reminded me that my best friend and I buried a time capsule in my back garden!! Must have been around that time in 1971, when the Blue Peter time capsule mania was going on. We were nine. Have messaged her to see if she remembers.
We never dug it up as forgot all about it. Probably deteriorated a long time ago. Would love to find out though! (And I know someone who knows the people who live there now.)

Sister Marcus seems like she might be hard work.

I thought that at first but I liked the way that developed. I can well believe that black nurses had to work exceptionally hard back then to get promotion.

Joyce/Nurse Highland is my favourite midwife at the moment.

Yes all she did was give her medical care (being careful to do so in secret) and the address for a hostel. Not like Trixie would or could have done much different.

PinkFrogss · 25/01/2026 21:22

The preview looked interesting, drama next week and what seems to be a scandalous story for Cyril and Rosalind. Although I do find their storyline very out of character for him.

I hope this isn’t the start of Joyce’s departure, I feel like we’ve hardly gotten to know her.

Yy poor Agata, that story line was dark.

I wondered if they’d offer her an abortion, were abortions legal by then? Or if she’ll end up giving the baby up for adoption.

Interesting that there’s the start of a cultural shift in women having baby’s on their own. I had a baby on my own so this always interests me.

There was also the single mother dance teacher a couple of series ago. Although they all take such an unrealistically liberal view it makes for a much less interesting story.

IIRC all of poplar ended up rallying around the dance teacher even though she was an ex stripper.
