Call the midwife

The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

Maybe in the film?

I thought Rosalind was relying on the pill a bit quickly after only taking it for a few days before their weekend away. I remember having to start it either during your period or take it for at least a full week when I started it on three separate occasions.

I saw this quote on the Radio times:

"As the classic Call the Midwife series moves further into the 1970s, it also seems the perfect time for our much-loved regulars to take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape," said creator Heidi Thomas when it was first announced in May last year.
"The rise in hospital births, and changes in the NHS, have clipped their wings, and this is their chance to take flight and work out what really matters... it is going to look absolutely fantastic on the big screen!"

Oh, that's a shame. I can never get that interested with the Christmas episodes when they send them all off abroad somewhere and shoehorn in an excuse for Fred's family to tail along. I much prefer the programme on home ground.

How unlucky is Rosalind. She gets pregnant the first and only time she has sex (unmarried) while on the pill.

She'd only just started taking it hadn't she? I seem to remember you had to take it for a while before it was effective.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/02/2026 07:40

Needmorelego · 15/02/2026 21:07

Oh everyone knows.
But it's very much "lets not say it out loud because it's 1971".

I agree I think they all know.

Before AIDS, it wasn't really a thing to use both. Anyway, she was a virgin and he'd been celibate since Lucille left, so no need to worry about STDs, as they were called then, IIRC.

This. They were pretty much out of favour by then and nobody called them condoms they were Durex or 'Johnnies'. They came back into use in the 80s with AIDS.

Bunionbabe · 16/02/2026 08:01

Surely as a nurse Rosalind would have been careful about following drug dosage/instructions? A bit dozy of her. Also, had Helen George done something to her face and boobs? She looks much more glam and a bit more plasticised than usual. Amazing cheekbones/contouring in AA scene.

Is she wearing a wig? I don’t know why but her hair didn’t look quite right in this episode.

Shes always looked pretty glam tbf.

Is that right? I didn’t know that.

Later on last evening I checked in Google and I put in something like 'Do they still put a ribbon on the door when a new baby is born in Italy' and it looks as if they do.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/02/2026 09:51

I really can’t he how Rosalind and Cyril have ended up together. They seem to have little in common.

I would really recommend the book ‘shadows of the workhouses’ (part of the CTM book series). The reality of it was so, so much worse than the TV series which is heavily sanitised and prettied up for feelz.

I started reading the trilogy when ctm first came out. I stopped part way through that book as it was so upsetting and although the book is still sat in my shelf all these years later I've never been back to it. Must try again.

The depression was initially triggered by a series of racist incidents and threats. Infertility issues compounded the situation. A lot of migrants at this time when back home where they were more valued and appreciated for this skills after a decade or more of trying to fit in and being subject to regular racism. One of the weaknesses in CTM as years have gone by has been the skimming the surface of social attitudes, particularly with respect to race and sex, in a way seriously minimises them to a new generation.

I still watch but I agree with the point that its time to call it a day and hopefully the new series will be a bit more realistic and a bit “it was all very nice really”.

I think most dramas mutate in this way after a few seasons. Remember when Casualty was a hard hitting drama about a failing health care system? And within a few years it was fully transformed in to feelgood soapery.

I agree. I'm wondering how the Rosalind and Cyril storyline will play out because being pregnant out of wedlock was still highly frowned upon in the 70's, especially to a black man.

notimpressedatm · 16/02/2026 10:09

I have to see Rosalind doesn’t come across as very bright. She is a midwife for god sake and she didn’t realise the pill doesn’t work immediately. She’s not working in a launderette or something, she is a trained midwife and nurse!

Hes got his divorce now so they can get married

Pregnant and out of wedlock storyline has been done to death on call the midwife

Yes they do. My sister lives in the French side of the French/Italian border on the med coast, and it’s lovely to see.

Housewife2010 · 16/02/2026 10:45

I haven't used the pill for years but I thought that if you started it on the first day of your period, you were covered straightaway, but if you started on a different date, you had to wait 7 days to be covered.

Housewife2010 · 16/02/2026 10:52

I've never missed an episode. It started when my daughter was in reception and she's now at university!
It's 30 years this month since Take That broke up and they had Take That helplines for their distraught fans. I'm going to be so sad when it finishes next month. I know there will be a prequel and whatnot, but it's not the same.
Wouldn't it be fabulous if they had a Call the Midwife helpline after the final episode? The actors could manage the phones IN CHARACTER! Even though I would want Nurse Crane or Joyce to deliver my baby (in my 50's so that's not going to happen!) and the Turners are always so sickly sweet, I would love Shelagh to talk me through my devastation at the end of the show! 😢👩‍⚕️

Yes it’s all so convenient.

Yes it’s all so convenient.

Even if they dash off and get married they'll have to wait a couple of weeks for the licence.
Then they will have to hope the baby isn't a 10pound baby so they can say he/she "came early" !
It's amazing how many babies used to come "early" and not long after a wedding 😬
Not sure Cyril's church elders will be happy though. Maybe they will move away.

I don’t think people cared as long as the couple were married when baby was born, even in the days of yore. Maybe there was a bit of gossip but mothers were not stigmatised as long as they had a ring on their finger when they gave birth.

Dr T at the "vanguard"? Please don't say that the films will end up being the Dr T show!

I bet that the film will be called how doctor Turner saved the world. He will go to another country with his simpering wife.
