Call the midwife

The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

Did they dig up A blue Peter time capsule recently, or did I imagine that?

And although AB- is uncommon, Eileen could have had rhesus negative blood of any ABO group, there was no need to go looking for her one living relative. That bit of storyline shouldn't have made it through the wide mesh plausibility filter.

Incorrect- AB- can only receive blood from AB- . AB+ can receive blood from any blood groups.

PumpkinSpice24 · 25/01/2026 21:53

Really enjoyed tonight’s episode but wow that Agatha story line got me good 😭 I love Joyce/ nurse highland and hope this isn’t a sign of her departure from NH, she is my favourite! Lovely to see SMJ as well, I do notice so much more of the turners each episode now though!

Evenstar · 25/01/2026 21:58

My father had to do his National Service in the UK as he was AB negative. He actually gave a blood donation for a sick child when he was in hospital recovering from surgery as he was the only registered donor in the region

Yes all she did was give her medical care (being careful to do so in secret) and the address for a hostel. Not like Trixie would or could have done much different.

Yes I thought she was harsh

Sorry didn’t read it properly - you are right!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/01/2026 22:12

I was pretty shocked that Trixie went back to their house and went in by herself. Surely she’d have taken a colleague or the police with her.

Very risky given how abusive they were.

It felt like all the other nurses would have turned a blind eye tbh.

89redballoons · 25/01/2026 22:29

I thought AB- could receive blood from any negative blood types. That's what the NHS says - here. I'm AB+ and I know I can receive any blood type but only donate to other AB+ people, so it didn't sound right to me.

Did they think differently about this in the 70s?

AB negative blood type

AB negative is the rarest blood type - just 1% of the donor population has it. It can be hard to find donors, so every AB negative donor makes a difference.

This was known in the 1970s. I don't know how much was known in the 1970s about antigens other than the ABO and Rhesus antigens which are less common but are relevant to blood transfusion.

Yes, it's people who are O Rh negative who can only receive blood from people of the same blood group. Fortunately, it's not particularly uncommon in the population.

PrimalScreaming · 25/01/2026 23:19

I think whoever wrote tonight's episode had a bet with their mates that they could get the word 'ostrich' in there! 'Ostrich-A-Go-Go'? I'm not familiar with the names of such establishments, but that seemed particularly random!

In other news has anyone noticed that Ella Bruccoleri (Sister Frances as was) has had a big gear shift up in roles recently - she is the lead in 'The Other Bennet Sister' which has had trailers on BBC, but not sure when it's airing.

I noticed she was in that in an ad I saw for it

I agree with Reggie that the Beano and other comics were great.

I was intrigued about the song the nuns were singing about wanting to know how long they had left to live. It was nice having them singing. I rewatched the first series and nuns singing was more of a feature and really added to it, especially to sad stories.

I don't think biscuit tins would be suitable for burying underground because of how wet earth gets in winter. Weren't the Blue Peter time capsule contents damaged when dug up did i read recently?

I remember the Blue Peter Garden getting broken into and vandalised in about the 70s/80s.

I noticed Sister MJ said she was 55 either at the General Strike (26?) or the Abdication (36?) She couldn't remember which.

Ignoring the months she was born in, of the programme and of the event, so roughly:

If she’d been 55 in 1926, in 1971 she’d turn 100, so we ought to see a party this season.

If she’d been 55 in 1936, at some time in 1971 she’d be 90.

It was the Eighties It was featured in an episode of Ashes to Ashes

I was intrigued about the song the nuns were singing about wanting to know how long they had left to live.

It’s Psalm 39.
(I’ve sung psalms in chapel for years and could add more, but it’s probably not of interest. 😀)

I'll look it up. It was lovely. I've just remembered we had to learn Psalm 100 in RE at school

JKGalbraithsTable · 26/01/2026 09:30

It was 29 years to 2000; now it’s 26 years since 2000… which is crazy and messing with my head!

PS. Yes it is of interest if you wanted to add more.

The preview looked interesting, drama next week and what seems to be a scandalous story for Cyril and Rosalind. Although I do find their storyline very out of character for him.

I hope this isn’t the start of Joyce’s departure, I feel like we’ve hardly gotten to know her.

I have a bad feeling about Christopher too.

Especially since Trixie then carelessly gave away poor Agata’s location by wandering into a public reception area holding all Agata’s clothes and trilling about the rag man!
