Call the midwife

The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

I don’t think people cared as long as the couple were married when baby was born, even in the days of yore. Maybe there was a bit of gossip but mothers were not stigmatised as long as they had a ring on their finger when they gave birth.

Yeah 😁
My husband was a "6 monther" !!

eggandonion · 16/02/2026 12:15

Looking back to the late eighties and early nineties I'd say the majority of first babies I knew were born to -ahem- recently married couples. I don't know what Cyrils congregation will have to say about the situation.

hagchic · 16/02/2026 12:46

Someone recently completed our entire family tree with marriage and birth dates.

The majority of marriage to birth of first child is significantly less than 9 months - including mine.

Surely as a nurse Rosalind would have been careful about following drug dosage/instructions? A bit dozy of her. Also, had Helen George done something to her face and boobs? She looks much more glam and a bit more plasticised than usual. Amazing cheekbones/contouring in AA scene.

I thought this too - a midwife making a mistake like that with the pill is unrealistic!

Needmorelego · 16/02/2026 11:32

Even if they dash off and get married they'll have to wait a couple of weeks for the licence.
Then they will have to hope the baby isn't a 10pound baby so they can say he/she "came early" !
It's amazing how many babies used to come "early" and not long after a wedding 😬
Not sure Cyril's church elders will be happy though. Maybe they will move away.

By the 70s I don’t think people were that bothered about a woman already being pregnant when she got married, as long as they were married when the baby was born. It would raise eyebrows but wouldn’t be a massive scandal

awrbc81 · 16/02/2026 13:05

A nurse/midwife being pregnant out of wedlock would have been a no no though, Rosalind is right to worry about being sacked. She will have to keep it quiet until they get married

Later on last evening I checked in Google and I put in something like 'Do they still put a ribbon on the door when a new baby is born in Italy' and it looks as if they do.

They do. A friend dc is married to an Italian and a lovely blue ribbon wrapped around the door when we went to visit.

Back to reading the thread now as only just watched the episode.

Feels like it’s coming to an end 😢😢

Yes most people probably didn't really care that much and likely made lots of jokes about "premature" honeymoon babies (which is why if you had a 10pounder it made it awkward).
Cyril's church ladies though definitely won't approve. I can totally picture the crossed arms and disapproving looks.

Well to be fair Cyril’s behaviour is very odd for a pastor.

I have to see Rosalind doesn’t come across as very bright. She is a midwife for god sake and she didn’t realise the pill doesn’t work immediately. She’s not working in a launderette or something, she is a trained midwife and nurse!

Physician heal thyself!

He doesn't seem to do much Pastoring anyway 😁
I feels like sometimes the script writers forget what jobs characters have.
Fred is the Miss Rabbit of Poplar. He was the bloody Lollypop man recently. Really? That time if the day would be busy in his shop.

But like Billy in Corrie😅

thought he was a social worker as well?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/02/2026 18:06

I think Rosalind was so desperate for a shag that she would have gone pop if she’d had to wait any longer 😉😂

Based on dates of weddings and births, three of my four great grandmothers were either pregnant or already had a baby when they got married. I think it was much more common than people admitted.

Surely they were VDs? Dire warnings in the problem pages of my mother's Woman's Own of the symptoms.
Also discussion of not being entitled to wear a white wedding dress!

I was at a girls grammar school in the 1960s.
The Headmistress had been a Biology teacher. Miss Roberts.

The total sum of our ‘sex education’ in the seven years I was there was a single lesson from Miss Roberts about VDs. I gave up Biology (we studied beasties in the order of how complicated they were, starting with single-called amoeba, I got as far as cockroaches) when I made my O level choices but only the bottom set was allowed to take Human Biology anyway.

The term after I left we amalgamated with the boys grammar. I don’t know if things changed, but I hope so.

I was at Grammar School in the 1960s. Sex Education was basically the word No and it was up to the girl to set the standards in a relationship.
