Call the midwife

The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

I was a kid in the 80s and it was definitely the Easter bunny who bought us the Easter eggs at home.

WonderfulSmith · 19/01/2026 21:49

I don’t remember the Easter bunny being a thing, even in the 80s.

Me neither, never had an Easter egg hunt as a child in the 80s either.
Maybe area dependent

Fatfreefatball · 20/01/2026 01:38

Mrs Turner is so irritatingly saccharine 🙄. I wish the Turners would emigrate to Australia but of course that will never happen with the writer being the actor's wife.

the fear of rabies in the early 70’s was huge. Dogs roamed the streets bit like us kids tbh. And I came from a naice middle class family. No idea why italics! We were out all day as were the dogs certainly in my area.

Same in my working class area, the roaming dogs

NewAgeNewMe · 20/01/2026 13:24

I can’t stop listening to the White Plains song When you are a king. Such a reminder of the early 70’s.

Me too. Really hits you in the heart, doesn't it? I mentioned it somewhere upthread as saw other people talking about it all over the Internet too. I have always loved it but hadn't heard it for a good few years.

NewAgeNewMe · 20/01/2026 13:51

Yes exactly. It’s the memories of that cosiness of being young I think.

Yes. Look at the comments on YouTube!
A lot of us clearly rushed there after hearing it. Oh, the power of music.

I'm another one! Such a strong memory /link to childhood.

The rabies Guy was horrific. It was my year of birth but I don’t really remember it being a ‘thing’ in the 70s, but do remember the posters at airports about it.

I was watching Season 5 last night - happened to be the Easter episode -1960 or 61, not sure. They had an Easter bonnet parade, the nuns were fasting for Lent and needed time for extra prayers and Simnel cake was eaten at Nonnatus.

No Easter Bunny in sight and no Easter egg hunt. I don't think things had changed that hugely in 10 years & become so much more commercial!

Maybe its the American influence 🤔 trixie has apparently picked up a lot over there

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/01/2026 10:46

I grew up with all of the Easter stuff, I was born in 1978. I remember realising the Easter bunny was just my mum and dad after seeing my mum creep into my room with an Easter egg when I was about 7-8yo.

There’s a photo of me and my brothers doing an Easter egg hunt with our friends, must have been mid 80s.

I grew up in Kent so maybe area specific.

NotMyRealAccount · 25/01/2026 14:04

The Easter Bunny didn't feature in the childhoods of my children (Birmingham and the west of Scotland, 1990s/early 2000s) though rabbit-shaped chocolate novelties (I'm not calling them "bunnies", that's what we called sanitary towels in my household of origin, and also, I'm not five years old) were associated with Easter.

I had completely forgotten about the rabbit shaped chocolate. It was beautiful.

No Sister Monica Joan today 😭😭😭
She's my favourite.

I had a look on the bbc website. Sister Monica Joan is listed as one of the characters in tonight's episode. I missed her last week so i do hope that she makes an appearence tonight.

blobby10 · 25/01/2026 20:13

We had the Easter bunny delivering/hiding chocolate eggs - 1970s, small village and I think the other families did the same but honestly can’t remember 😊 I created the Easter bunny egg hunts for my own kids in the late 90s early 2000s!

NimbleHiker · 25/01/2026 20:17

That poor woman with ms. I think that there is more to her story.
