I Fought the Law brings to life the true story of a mother who fought for 15 years to secure justice for her daughter.

on sun and mon for two weeks this 4 part series is based on a true life story

Smith stars as Ann Ming in the true story of a mother who refused to give up her fight for justice after her daughter’s killer was acquitted.

Driven by grief and determination, Ann launched a 15-year campaign to overturn the centuries-old double jeopardy law – which once prevented someone from being tried twice for the same crime – eventually ensuring her daughter Julie’s murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006.

Written by Jamie Crichton (All Creatures Great and Small (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/all-creatures-great-small-season-6-release-date/)), the series is based on Ming’s memoir For the Love of Julie.

I Fought the Law was first announced in May 2024. At the time, Ming said of the drama: "I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the double jeopardy law.

"My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn’t going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.

I’m overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful."

Smith herself added: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the double jeopardy law to be changed.

"She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

The cast of I Fought the Law also includes Daniel York Loh (Scarborough) as Ann’s husband Charlie Ming and Enzo Cilenti (The Crown) as DS Mark Braithwaite, alongside Marlowe Chan-Reeves (Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/doctor-who/)), Olivia Ng (Phoenix Rise), Jake Davies (Grace (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/grace-season-6-release-date/)), Kent Riley (Mr Bates vs The Post Office) and Rufus Jones (Rivals (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/rivals-season-2-disney-plus-release-date/)).

We all agreed it was ludicrous. When I started it wasn’t illegal to rape your wife. The law thankfully has moved on.

Did anyone else see Loose Women today? Laura Witmore was on there promoting her new programe Britains Killer Teens. She spoke about some of the cases featured in the programme one of which was a 15 year old girl murdered by her 16 year old ex boyfriend. It has been classed as a knife crime despite there being abuse and coercive control beforehand because..................the law says you cant be a victim of domestic abuse in a relationship unless you are over 16. Seems that this girls parents are now treading a similar road to Ann Ming..............trying to get this ridiculous law changed

Sheridan Smith (as Ann Ming) quoting Maragaret Atwood on last night's episode:

"Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them".

How true.

The Police said they'd searched every square inch of the house , obviously not .

I'm not surprised, Cleveland Police were very poor. This is the SAME force who searched and couldn't find ‘the man in the canoe’ (John Darwin) - who faked his own death disappearing into the sea.

Local people notified the force with sightings of him in town.

He was living in the house adjoining his own ( eating with his wife and going back to the other house through an adjoining door).
Back to Julie, I had a friend who was a suspect in this case. He had been out in dates with Julie.

Ann actually had to chivvy ppl to do their bloody jobs

JewelleryCat · 08/09/2025 21:44

I was horrified by that petition by the neighbour just because Charlie is a different race to Ann. I know the 70s was different but it was still horrible

Very emotional watch, and yes I did cry, especially the hug at the end.

butterpuffed · 09/09/2025 17:29

It was really sad , but also for her son when he said she should remember she still had family who were alive . I thought that would be addressed but it wasn't .

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2025 17:53

Yes to fight non stop meant she was spending time with her alive adult kids

Finished this tonight and cried a lot!

I was so angry for Ann, what she went through was unbelievable, the police were so useless and the sexism was palatable.

That said how two juries couldn’t find him guilty is mind blowing 🤯 was it misogyny?

Wasn’t Sheridan Smith awesome? Surely another BAFTA performance? And am in awe of the lady it was based on. Best thing I’ve seen for a long time. I was cheering her on at the end. Very moving.

The two jury's were made up of a high majority of men, so I've always wondered this (the case was in my region, so I've followed it for decades) so I suspect misogyny played a big part, as did the defence's accusations that Julie was promiscuous. Back then, they loved to plant the seed that the woman asked for it. I always said to my Mum that men on jury service in such cases were more likely to think "Eeh, poor bloke probably did just have sex with her a few weeks back and that was why his semen was on the blanket. Crikey, could happen to any of us, eh?"

Similarly, defence's until very recently were allowed to play the 'rough sex' card when a man strangled a woman to death or similar. No wonder rape convictions are still so very low.
