I Fought the Law brings to life the true story of a mother who fought for 15 years to secure justice for her daughter.

on sun and mon for two weeks this 4 part series is based on a true life story

Smith stars as Ann Ming in the true story of a mother who refused to give up her fight for justice after her daughter’s killer was acquitted.

Driven by grief and determination, Ann launched a 15-year campaign to overturn the centuries-old double jeopardy law – which once prevented someone from being tried twice for the same crime – eventually ensuring her daughter Julie’s murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006.

Written by Jamie Crichton (All Creatures Great and Small (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/all-creatures-great-small-season-6-release-date/)), the series is based on Ming’s memoir For the Love of Julie.

I Fought the Law was first announced in May 2024. At the time, Ming said of the drama: "I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the double jeopardy law.

"My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn’t going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.

I’m overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful."

Smith herself added: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the double jeopardy law to be changed.

"She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

The cast of I Fought the Law also includes Daniel York Loh (Scarborough) as Ann’s husband Charlie Ming and Enzo Cilenti (The Crown) as DS Mark Braithwaite, alongside Marlowe Chan-Reeves (Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/doctor-who/)), Olivia Ng (Phoenix Rise), Jake Davies (Grace (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/grace-season-6-release-date/)), Kent Riley (Mr Bates vs The Post Office) and Rufus Jones (Rivals (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/rivals-season-2-disney-plus-release-date/)).

The police weren't going to do anything regarding Julie going missing and totally ignored what Ann was saying which should have raised alarm bells.

Institutional racism and institutional misogyny are discussed a lot but IMO there is institutional classism too

butterpuffed · 01/09/2025 17:11

The Police said they'd searched every square inch of the house , obviously not .

Agree. It's abhorrent on all counts.

FishPie2 · 01/09/2025 18:28

I binge watched the lot last night, was only going to watch first two but couldn't turn it off. I know the story but I thought the acting was brilliant, Sheridan Smith gets better and better

JacknDiane · 01/09/2025 18:32

I watched this last night, thought Sheridan Smith was excellent in it.

Annoyingly the bbc have a new drama on tonight at the same slot. Think I’ll watch the itv on x so I can skip the ads.

I think they would have searched more thoroughly if it had been a posher area.

Was it good? I couldn’t make my mind up from the trailer whether to give it a go or not

LeaAndDer · 01/09/2025 19:25

Surely she would have smelled the body when she was getting her daughters clothes / and why did the body take so long to decompose?

heating was off while house was unoccupied so bathroom would have been quite cold. Julie was killed six weeks before Christmas.lot colder up North, ..........then when Julies ex moved back in heating went back on which would have moved decomposition along faster than it had been.

LeaAndDer · 01/09/2025 20:15

Sometimes the law and how we go to trial is an ass.

LeaAndDer · 01/09/2025 20:53

Things are annoying me about this production are from the outside Anne’s home home is a bungalow with a window either side of the front door. Yet when they’re inside, into the hallway the stairs run straight up, there’s no door on the left into another room. Also her nails if she’s a healthcare worker, nurse or whatever why has she got long nails painted like this all the time?

FurForksSake · 01/09/2025 21:03

I don’t think hand hygiene was as thing until the early 2000’s.

Agree! Young working class newly single mother so they just couldn’t be bothered to bring themselves to give a shit about her absence.

It just said in the drama they were in that house for FIVE DAYS

LeaAndDer · 01/09/2025 21:38

You have to admire the tenacity of Anne.

JenniferBooth · 01/09/2025 21:40

Why the fuck did they tell the papers that they found the body when Ann did!

LeaAndDer · 01/09/2025 21:41

Whose house was Anne decorating- I’m confused.?
