I Fought the Law brings to life the true story of a mother who fought for 15 years to secure justice for her daughter.

on sun and mon for two weeks this 4 part series is based on a true life story

Smith stars as Ann Ming in the true story of a mother who refused to give up her fight for justice after her daughter’s killer was acquitted.

Driven by grief and determination, Ann launched a 15-year campaign to overturn the centuries-old double jeopardy law – which once prevented someone from being tried twice for the same crime – eventually ensuring her daughter Julie’s murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006.

Written by Jamie Crichton (All Creatures Great and Small (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/all-creatures-great-small-season-6-release-date/)), the series is based on Ming’s memoir For the Love of Julie.

I Fought the Law was first announced in May 2024. At the time, Ming said of the drama: "I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the double jeopardy law.

"My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn’t going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.

I’m overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful."

Smith herself added: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the double jeopardy law to be changed.

"She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

The cast of I Fought the Law also includes Daniel York Loh (Scarborough) as Ann’s husband Charlie Ming and Enzo Cilenti (The Crown) as DS Mark Braithwaite, alongside Marlowe Chan-Reeves (Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/doctor-who/)), Olivia Ng (Phoenix Rise), Jake Davies (Grace (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/grace-season-6-release-date/)), Kent Riley (Mr Bates vs The Post Office) and Rufus Jones (Rivals (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/rivals-season-2-disney-plus-release-date/)).

Nymphomaniac should be wiped from all languages. She was a young woman with a healthy sexual awareness. What's wrong with that?

So horrible that her sex life was brought into it.

I am humbled by Ann Ming. What a huge thing she did for society. I hope her success brought her some much deserved peace.

MrsAvocet · 01/09/2025 22:36

I knew what was going to happen but still found it very upsetting, and massively anger provoking. I know some of the details will have been changed for dramatic effect but I can well believe the attitudes of the police and lawyers towards Julie. Not to mention the gutter press. From what I have read the real Ann was a consultant on the series and I'm sure she wouldn't have been involved with anything she felt was inaccurate. The more we see the more horrific the whole thing gets. How anyone can go through an experience like that and not only survive but continue to fight for justice for such a long time is amazing.

placemats · 01/09/2025 22:37

There's two more episodes to go.

Change2banon · 01/09/2025 22:39

I’m from the North East and their accents are really getting on my nerves! Why can’t they use NE actors, or at least get actors that can do the geordie accent reasonably 😡

Love it, but I think the title is odd.
The rest of the line is "... and the law won." - which it didn't!

There’s no rest of the line .. this is literally only the title of the show .. nothing else 🤷‍♀️

I mostly agree as the accents grated. But they were also bring culturally appropriate with the casting of Charlie and the children which narrowed the field, I guess. But Sheridan's accent is not good.

There was a genuine Geordie in the witness box! The doctor ( male). And Andrew Lancel was fine. Not sure where the guy who plays Charlie is from but he was all right.

I'm guessing they have voice coaching. The repeated use of 'nowt' was really wrong to my ears.

I’ve watched them all as will be away next week - I’m in awe of Ann Ming. Apart from that lips sealed. There is a program with the real Ann Ming as well on ITVX not sure if will be shown on tv as haven’t looked.

SabreIsMyFave · 03/09/2025 21:17

I have watched them all now - caught episodes 3 and 4 on ITVX. What a brilliant watch this was. Sheridan Smith was exquisite as always, and OMG I did shed some tears during this. 😢 I agree that Ann Ming is an utter legend. What a woman! Can't say too much because spoilers, but wow, she's a force to be reckoned with!!! I was in bits at the end of episode 4 (the last one) though!

Inexplicably, the actor who plays the nasty little shit who murdered Ann Ming's daughter Julie, (the guy with the dark curly hair and the Scousers moustache,) is the actor who played Jacob in Coronation Street! Shock (Jack James Ryan.) I discovered this when I was looking to see what month Classic Corrie is on now. I would NEVER have known it was him if I hadn't stumbled upon this today on Corriepedia! Also a good actor! In fact, they were all good in this!!!

Thanks @JewelleryCat 😃 I didn't spot it at ALL, and I have seen all 4 episodes now of 'I fought the law.' I can see it now that I know, but if someone had said 'have a guess who he is,' and even said he has been on Corrie in the past 3-4 years, I still wouldn't have got it!
