I Fought the Law brings to life the true story of a mother who fought for 15 years to secure justice for her daughter.

on sun and mon for two weeks this 4 part series is based on a true life story

Smith stars as Ann Ming in the true story of a mother who refused to give up her fight for justice after her daughter’s killer was acquitted.

Driven by grief and determination, Ann launched a 15-year campaign to overturn the centuries-old double jeopardy law – which once prevented someone from being tried twice for the same crime – eventually ensuring her daughter Julie’s murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006.

Written by Jamie Crichton (All Creatures Great and Small (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/all-creatures-great-small-season-6-release-date/)), the series is based on Ming’s memoir For the Love of Julie.

I Fought the Law was first announced in May 2024. At the time, Ming said of the drama: "I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the double jeopardy law.

"My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn’t going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.

I’m overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful."

Smith herself added: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the double jeopardy law to be changed.

"She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

The cast of I Fought the Law also includes Daniel York Loh (Scarborough) as Ann’s husband Charlie Ming and Enzo Cilenti (The Crown) as DS Mark Braithwaite, alongside Marlowe Chan-Reeves (Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/doctor-who/)), Olivia Ng (Phoenix Rise), Jake Davies (Grace (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/grace-season-6-release-date/)), Kent Riley (Mr Bates vs The Post Office) and Rufus Jones (Rivals (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/rivals-season-2-disney-plus-release-date/)).

The bloody nerve of Anne's son in-law asking her to clear out her (then missing) daughters stuff

Tho if he hasn’t she wouldn’t have known for years

I thought tonight's episode was excellent. Sheridan Smith is superb as usual. I was shocked and nearly in tears when Ann found the body, even though I knew it was coming. It's one of those stories that is so horrific that if you didn't know it's true would seem unbelievable. First the police are so reluctant to investigate and then they miss the body. And that's before we get into the whole double jeopardy stuff.
TV dramas have done a good job in shining light on some very important issues around the justice system in the last couple of years and it looks like this is another one.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2025 23:08

They said they searched every inch so do they not take bath sides off then

if looking for drugs they would have done

It's almost as if you're transported back to what actually happened, the acting, script, direction and production is that good. So sad to watch. How did the forensics miss her body not being there?

She went into the bathroom because her son in law said there was a smell and her grandson agreed. The child was probably 5/6 and his mum Julie was 22. So pregnant and married very young. I too would having been protective of her if her mum.

Edited

I know that. I meant it as in she went to tackle the smell as her sil Andrew cba

Tbh I thought at first it was the sil Andrew who killed her to stop the divorce Esp as it was on court day - but after reading articles it obv wasn’t him

I watched this last night, I thought it was such good acting from everyone and I just couldn’t believe the way the police kept ignoring their concerns. I’m guessing they did that because Julie was 22 and the police thought “just a young woman, will come back in her own time” ignoring that she has a child who she’d never leave

I thought this was no spoilers 🙁

Sorry. It's a real case.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/09/2025 09:32

I’m on the fence on this - yes it’s a real case so you can read and find who did it - that’s what I did as assumed it was sil

i thought he was silly to say about the smell. Then reliesed he can’t be the killer as wouldn’t have said about the smell

he just seemed so blase about her missing and even when SS screamed and cried he didn’t rush to her from the kitchen - like he knew she was there

but for those who haven’t read or know the case - saying who the killer is , is a spoiler

Binge watched all 4 episodes yesterday, really got into as I remember it happening, good series, decent acting.

The police said that they did a proper search !
They certainly didn’t :(
The police in the 80s and 90s were so incompetent, so many other stories the same around that time of police messing up.
Sheridan is wonderful : what a great actress she really is.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/09/2025 14:00

What i said. Surely they would remove the baby panel like searching for drugs

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 01/09/2025 14:21

I imagine that the forensics didn’t bother doing anything much. Not removing a bath panel ? Beggars belief.

It was just a link to a Cosmopolitan article about Ann Ming and what shes doing now and how Dunlop has been moved to an open prison

The police weren't going to do anything regarding Julie going missing and totally ignored what Ann was saying which should have raised alarm bells.
