I Fought the Law brings to life the true story of a mother who fought for 15 years to secure justice for her daughter.

on sun and mon for two weeks this 4 part series is based on a true life story

Smith stars as Ann Ming in the true story of a mother who refused to give up her fight for justice after her daughter’s killer was acquitted.

Driven by grief and determination, Ann launched a 15-year campaign to overturn the centuries-old double jeopardy law – which once prevented someone from being tried twice for the same crime – eventually ensuring her daughter Julie’s murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006.

Written by Jamie Crichton (All Creatures Great and Small (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/all-creatures-great-small-season-6-release-date/)), the series is based on Ming’s memoir For the Love of Julie.

I Fought the Law was first announced in May 2024. At the time, Ming said of the drama: "I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the double jeopardy law.

"My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn’t going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.

I’m overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful."

Smith herself added: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the double jeopardy law to be changed.

"She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

The cast of I Fought the Law also includes Daniel York Loh (Scarborough) as Ann’s husband Charlie Ming and Enzo Cilenti (The Crown) as DS Mark Braithwaite, alongside Marlowe Chan-Reeves (Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/doctor-who/)), Olivia Ng (Phoenix Rise), Jake Davies (Grace (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/grace-season-6-release-date/)), Kent Riley (Mr Bates vs The Post Office) and Rufus Jones (Rivals (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/rivals-season-2-disney-plus-release-date/)).

Thank you so much

Just watched the first two episodes. I don’t know anything about this case. Great acting, especially from Sheridan.

I mostly agree as the accents grated. But they were also bring culturally appropriate with the casting of Charlie and the children which narrowed the field, I guess. But Sheridan's accent is not good.

There was a genuine Geordie in the witness box! The doctor ( male). And Andrew Lancel was fine. Not sure where the guy who plays Charlie is from but he was all right.

I'm guessing they have voice coaching. The repeated use of 'nowt' was really wrong to my ears.

But the accent wasnt meant to be Geordie. Ann Ming is from Billingham, which is a completely different county. I'm from the north east (Tyne and Wear) and find Billingham/hartlepool accents almost Yorkshire sounding.

Billingham is not exactly a million miles away! Still very much North East - definitely more north east sounding than Yorkshire ime 🤷‍♀️

The Cure - Pictures of you. One of my favourites 😊

I love that The Cure seem to be having a second wind what with Robert singing at Glastonbury with Olivia headlining and then all the way through Mixed Tape it makes me warm inside.

Not to my ears. My friend is from there and I definitely hear a yorkshire twang in her family. Its not at all like a Geordie/Mackem accent

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2025 06:44

I didn't say they were meant to be Geordie. The court was in Newcastle and one of the witnesses was at least from the NE. I looked an actor up and he was a Geordie. I agree the accent in Billingham is different - a bit of a hybrid. None of them sound like they are from there either!

A lot of this was filmed in my village last summer ('Julie's house' was actually my school friends grandparents real house) It's really weird watching it all. It's also a hugely shocking story and such an important one to tell.

Middlemarch123 · 05/09/2025 20:36

If you’re Sheridan fans, any you haven’t already, please watch Mrs Biggs. She’s breathtaking.

Just watched it. Sheridan smith was outstanding. I wasn’t aware of the case. So glad it’s been told, what an amazing woman Ann Ming is.

Netcurtainnelly · 06/09/2025 22:57

Despicable human that killed her should be hung.
Well done Ann Ming.
Sadly more and more women have been murdered since then and violence towards women has increased.
At least the old law has now been overturned and it's helped others too.

E3 tonight

Looking forward to Ep3 tonight. There should be a documentary on soon with Ann Ming in, so that’s something to watch for background. Interview with Ann in papers today, she speaks so highly of Sheridan Smith. She’s also still friends with the family liaison officer who supported her through it all, remarkable lady.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/09/2025 15:01

When I was at law school double jeopardy was very much part of our curriculum.

What did you learn

it was the late 80’s, so couldn’t be tried twice for the same offence if found not guilty.
