Is anyone watching? I’ve read about this case before so was very interested to see they’ve made a Netflix docu-series, especially since they have her actual family/friends/real witnesses involved in it.

Ive watched one episode so far. It’s such a sad but strange and intriguing case. Her poor mum and dad.

I have watched the first episode
I have seen several Documentaries. About her before so I'm interested to see if anything else comes up it's such a sad case
I hope for her sake she accidentally went overboard because the alternative is horrifying to think about .

Member984815 · 18/07/2025 12:26

I thought she maybe disappeared herself but in this age there is no way that's possible. Her parents attitude to her coming out made me very sad but she seemed to move past it and carried on. I don't think those pictures were her, it's a way for her family to keep her alive even though it's most likely she had a drunken accident. When the man in the neighbouring cabin said they would lean out off the balcony to talk , it made sense that she fell .

I'm not justifying Amy,s parents reaction to her being gay but it was more taboo in the 90,s ,my nephew came out a couple of years ago and my sister Has no issue with it and is fully supportive as are my parents but I'm not sure my parents would have been as accepting of it if it was me or my sister and we are a similar age to Amy
That said her parents and brother are absolutely broken by her disappearance I'm sure they would have accepted her sexuality in time.

<WARNING: spoiler if you haven't seen episodes 2 and 3)

I think she's alive (or at least was for some time after she disappeared). The number of unconnected witnesses who were so confident that they had seen her, under strange circumstances, and 'that' picture, unless it's a deepfake, to me was definitely her, even before they showed the FBI facial measurements bit.

Honestly I hope she, s not still alive for her sake if she was trafficked she would have gone through hell

Edited

I understand that it was a different time , I was a teen in the 90s and it was so much different then , thank god times have changed

I have seen a few Documentaries about Amy,s Dissappearence, and it's never been mentioned about her being gay before which seems odd as a person, s sexuality is an intrinsic part of who they are
I did find a reddit forum and somebody who claimed they went to school with her said it was widely known she was gay
I just wish her family could get closure one way or another
I found the cruise entertainment manager quite abrupt and rude.

I agree, that picture was her. I cant understand her parents (lovely and utterly heartbroken though they seem) not upping stakes and going to Barbados / Curacao or wherever she was spotted.

I can't think of a reason for NOT going and passing photos around etc. Setting up a website and posting photos is great, but I would be on the first plane out there

I agree the Cruise manager was an awful man, Basically thought the family should just get over it. Didn't care that she appeared to be missing and refused to put a message out over the tannoy as it might disturb the other guests. He was absolutely vile.

The picture was spookily like her and <spoiler alert> it seemed like she might have a child or children. If she is out there though the people who have her will be dangerous so i think it could be a bad idea for the parents to go looking for her. I really hope the parents get some closure though. It was a fascinating but really disturbing documentary.

Ah ok thanks, this is the first doc I have seen about it.

A living hell for them

Yes horrendous I hope they get closures in their lifetime.

I used to think that she must have fallen overboard but not after that documentary. For one thing, her body would have likely washed up eventually, especially because they were just about to dock.

I also used to wonder why criminals would target women who would be missed for sex trafficking, but the documentary highlighted how it’s easier for people to get away with crimes on cruise ships.

Ive certainly no wish to go on a cruise, ever. The cruise manager was vile - no empathy whatsoever. WTF was the point of him searching the ship after everyone had got off??

My dh wants to go on a cruise but I won't go , maritime law is different to our laws and its complicated by where the ship is registered and international water. Just too easy to get away with crime . That director should have faced some sort of backlash , he treated a crime as an inconvenience.

HurdyGurdy19 · 19/07/2025 12:35

I got real goosebumps when it was suggested she may have children. She was 23 when she went missing, and it was about 25 years ago? If she had daughters, it could have been that they are the next generation of exploited women and that's why she doesn't make contact with family, as she's staying to try and support her children.

If she didn't have children, then in her late 40s, would she still be useful as a sex worker? Or once she had reached the point of being no use to the captors, would she be "disappeared"? I can't see them just releasing her, as she'd be able to identify them and give the authorities so much information.

This is the first I've heard of the case, and it's interesting to read above of information that wasn't covered in this docu-series, like it being widely known that she is gay, or that her parents got ripped off my unscrupulous private investigators.

It's a very sad case, and I hope for all concerned, that they get answers, even if they're not the answers they're hoping for.

Livelovebehappy · 19/07/2025 13:23

I remember the other documentaries too. They were sadly scammed multiple times by people exploiting their desperation to find their daughter. I think she must have fallen overboard. It those pictures are genuine she's clearly not locked away somewhere so would be quite capable of getting help. I just don't think it's possible that she's out there somewhere being held captive for so many years. Just doesn't make sense.

JMSA · 19/07/2025 22:10

I’ve just finished watching it. The Cruise Director was an egotistical arsehole. When he started dancing, I couldn’t believe the blatant disrespect.

If she remains undiscovered after this programme, then there is no way she could still be alive.

I really felt for her poor family.

Maybe she has Stockholm syndrome?

Honestly I'm not sure what to beleive
But if she wad trafficked I think she's been dead a long time I think there were " sightings " up to about 2007 but nothing for many years ,the sightings have never been proved even though people who beleive they saw her beleive it whole heartedly.
Imo and it's just an opinion of she was trafficked they got rid 9f her when it becsme to problematic to keep her.

JMSA · 19/07/2025 22:30

Yes, and the distinctive tattoos she had would have made her a nightmare to keep unidentified 😢
I can’t believe the stupid sleazeball marines guy didn’t tell anyone until years later.

Her Dad said that ,it's a possibility I guess.

If it ever turns out that the cruise director was trafficking women off the boat, or procuring prostitutes for customers, I wouldn’t be surprised. There was something so calculating about him.

That's an interesting thought ,he was obnoxious like he couldn't see what all the fuss was about .
