Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

Ha ha I thought Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland too. Her hair looked as if it had been parted with an axe.

beguilingeyes · 05/06/2025 20:26

I've only watched the first one so far and I seem to be alone in thinking it's a bit of a mess and Matthew Goode is awful. Jackson Lamb he ain't. His character just comes across as an arse.
DH wants to carry on, but I'm not engaged yet

MaryGreenhill · 05/06/2025 20:29

It's brilliant

You're not. I'm staying with it, and it does tighten up a bit after the first ep, but I don't think it's amazing. A little too pleased with itself.

Fransgran · 05/06/2025 20:45

I wasn't sure at first that this would be for me but gradually I got totally absorbed and binged the lot over several nights, Now I wish I'd spun it out a bit longer.....

It's a slow burner and worth staying with. I wasn't impressed with the first episode either but having read the books I stuck with it and am really glad I did.

I’m on episode two and hadn’t noticed the swearing- I swear a lot in my daily life, including the word cunt.

That will be why you didn't notice.
I did notice because I don't swear as a rule as I have no need to, and it is inappropriate at work anyway.

StupidTrolleyThing · 05/06/2025 22:41

Just brilliant!

I’m enjoying this. I hadn’t noticed much swearing and I rarely swear. I do live in Scotland though and maybe Scots swear more than the English although Edinburgh is less sweary than Glasgow. It’s not threatening swearing though just the casual occasional sort that I am maybe habituated to and don’t notice. It’s all very far fetched but interesting and we are playing name that person and location. We got confused by them crossing the bridge to go between the brother’s care home in mid Lothian and his old home in East Lothian but they maybe just fancied getting some bridge and river shots in.

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2025 07:19

Late to this but binged it all now - really enjoyed it. I thought they were going to explain a bit more about why the evil mum was wearing that terrible wig and was so heavily made up all the time….Confused

Gloriia · 06/06/2025 07:47

Just watched ep 8. Thankyou @CaptainMyCaptain for suggesting I stick with it. I now love it and don't want it to end, bit of a turnaround from me saying it was slow and boring Grin.

I'm intrigued by the Sam Haig thing can't wait to hear the full story about that.

Loved his stepson and lodger doing yoga. Also Akram as always very reliable yet amusing character.

Saturdaybloodycleaner · 06/06/2025 07:53

I finished it last night and really enjoyed it, good characters and lots of twists and turns. I am sure it’s been said earlier on thread but Netflix and definitely trying to pick up the Slow Horses watchers with this one.

MissPrismsMistake · 06/06/2025 07:59

Came home late last night. Re-subscribed to Netflix about 6.am. Just finished Ep 6.

Not sure anything on a screen has made me this happy since Succession.

So, yes, to the title of this thread - yes. Even his jumpers are seducing me now.

Everyone be sure to rate it on Netflix - hopefully more chance of further series.

Yes, good point

Done
There are 10 books in the series. I recently read The Shadow Murders (no 9) and it is one of the best in the series.

Without giving away any spoilers would you agree with me that the plot in the book of the motive for the kidnapping and imprisonment, was far stronger that the Netflix version?

I read this book years ago so I'm afraid I don't remember. Sorry.

We’re on episode five and enjoying so far too although as a PP mentioned I am finding Morck’s constant irritability, anger and misanthropy very wearing to watch. I wish he’d tone down the F word too - boring and annoying to listen to.

The metallic bunker scenes are nightmarish though, and difficult to watch.

Certainly very intriguing. I also have a theory of the masked shooter based on the eyes but won’t say it now!!!

MissPrismsMistake · 06/06/2025 13:03

Why am I finding his irritability and anger so delicious? (Maybe I’d call them impatience and frustration instead?)

Either way, the man badly needs a hug. And I am well practised in that dept.

DoctorMartin · 06/06/2025 13:08

I’ve never watched Harry Potter but the brother’s carer was also the batshit teacher in Happy Valley.

I don't think it would matter if you did tbh.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/06/2025 13:14

It's not actually a bunker it's for training deep sea divers working on oil rigs etc. A pressurised container. https://images.app.goo.gl/k5w3dB7C8uXrjoHRA

Have you heard Shirley Henderson reading Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market? It’s shiveringly good. I’m not sure this is the BBC version I heard on the radio, but it’s worth anyone’s time:
