If Eurovision went back to being strictly for actual European nations only , that would be an improvement as Israel wouldn't be eligible.

Only downside would be no more fun songs from Australia.

Israeli airstrikes struck a refugee camp in September 2023, before the music festival.

You're deluded if you think the people of Palestine would be living in peace if it weren't for October 7th.

How many rockets have Hamas fired from Gaza into Israel since 2006?

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 18/05/2025 00:22

If Mumsnet is an echo chamber and people against the genocide are a minority and most people support Israel, why is Israel the only country who had the audience muted during their song and vote announcements? 🤔

To be fair, they weren't. There was a thread on Reddit about acts having audience reaction muted and cheers added (for example Australia lost most of its audience participation which maybe stuffed its chances). It seems to be the new normal, which is a shame.

I couldn't give a fuck about Israel or Gaza on Eurovision night.

Go away.

Respect the thread starter!
Its sad that such a light hearted Kind thread dissolves into anything else

Thanks for keeping us entertained throughout! And to all the fellow eurofans see you next year!

There’s a reason they’re not in the competition

Yes. They aren't a member of the EBU or a recognised country.

Kinda hard to enter if you aren't a recognised country. Ask Kosovo who want to enter next year but aren't recognised by Serbia.

Shocked that the UK didn’t get any public votes! A wake up call for us in the UK ..we are not a popular country!

You're meant to vote for the best song. Not "the most popular country "

WinterKitchen · 18/05/2025 00:28

ScribblingPixie · 18/05/2025 00:21

But also Switzerland! That was a sweet song. Are they unpopular in Europe or without 'alliances'? I don't really know.

They got at least one vote. Mine. They must round them up or something. I voted by phone and got an acknowledgement.

Send something in Welsh?

I’ve said this for years! We should show our culture beyond songs in English. And Welsh pop music is very Eurovision!

Why is Switzerland an unpopular country?

If there are 20 votes available to buy for anyone bothered to engage in the televote process, it’s easy to see how it’s so open to manipulation by motivated and well resourced forces.
The EBU will be breathing a sigh of relief that next year’s Eurovision won’t be hosted in Tel Aviv.

Well they shouldn't play with fire then.

Who knew that electing a terrorist organisation to govern could possibly end badly? I suspect they may have buyers remorse now.

GreenApplesRedApplesYellowApples · 18/05/2025 00:28

The EBU that is.

Much like the jury votes, they take the top ten voted-for countries from each national vote and award points. Zero points doesn't mean no votes.

They only get points if they're in the top 10 of a country's votes. Nobody gets literally zero votes.

TheGrimSmile · 18/05/2025 00:20

It's just a minority with an agenda voting over and over again - they can vote up to 20 times. Most normal people only vote once. If Palestine had been in the competition, they would have won for sure - however shite their song was. Most people are definitely not on the side of Israel in all of this. People don't generally side with bullies.

As I posted further up, I saw several posts on Facebook about voting for Israel and there was one that I saw that told people to vote more than once. It was definitely manipulated. The song wasn’t even that good.

They shouldn't even be in it. They're not in Europe.

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2025 00:30

Voting should be restricted to participating countries only

I think Wales should be allowed to compete in their own right! We've completed in Junior Eurovision, and we already have the ideal selection contest with Cân i Gymru.

EmmaRose25 · 18/05/2025 00:30

The Switzerland song was lovely, perhaps not memorable when people were voting?

Great results for Greece, Albania and Latvia. Italy also did better than expected. 10th for Switzerland is very respectable for a host country. Pleased to see that we weren’t the bottom of the Big 5 - I thought we might be this year.

I loved Latvia. And the Italian was just so lovely

Theoretically we could have been getting a good chunk of votes, coming eleventh in ever country and get no points.

It is. There is a restaurant of the world vote but otherwise you can only vote if you are participating

I think this is the problem - lovely but didn't stand out, the staging was so simple so there was no gimmick to make it memorable.
