I don’t think she would have access to the money at all. She has a guardian role so would have to go through the lawyer to get money released.

Phil has written off and forgotten so many debts over the years. The number of times he’s had £50k here and £100k there taken from his magical safe to pay for all manner of things. He must be owed at least £1 million from various residents. I suppose most of it was dirty cash he stole in the first place so easy come, easy go.

Shellingbynight · 23/04/2025 13:19

Yes @Eastie77Returns is right, Bernie said she can't access the money herself. I'm sure she would if she could! It must be in some kind of trust. I have no idea (other than spite and revenge) why Nish would think Bernie is the very person to deal with it.

the80sweregreat · 23/04/2025 13:59

Kat got Alfie off a debt he owed Phil. Karen took off owning him that 50k ‘ kidnap ‘ money. True that many others have been at that Magic safe too! ..
I wish Phil luck being a carer with some help in too.
I suppose it’ll be like Lola, we won’t see the really bad things and Nigel will have a dignified death.
I hope it’s done with sensitivity and the writers don’t mess it up too much!
todays one was good.

Itisjustmyopinion · 23/04/2025 14:03

Were the scenes on now filmed before or after the live? If before, I am wondering if the poor storylines just now are because at the time the effort behind the scenes was going into the live episodes

Shellingbynight · 23/04/2025 14:06

80s If it's done well it definitely won't be dignified that's for sure. And realistically Nigel is likely to live for years, and they aren't going to go down that route. He will have a convenient death (or go home to Julie) before it gets to the really unpleasant bits.

the80sweregreat · 23/04/2025 14:16

Shelling , I was on Facebook and they think he might be gone by Christmas!
It’s probably only ‘ fan’ talk , but it might be the case given that Lola was properly ill for around six months or something too.
be interesting to see how it pans out with them.
I know this is different to Lola’s diagnoses etc.

Shellingbynight · 23/04/2025 15:22

Yes I am expecting Nigel to be gone by then. Dying quickly of dementia IRL is very unusual, but soaps don't want to drag it out.

RedToothBrush · 23/04/2025 15:35

How often have you come across the 'dead body needs digging up and moving' problem?

EastEnders is on this issue for the second time in what 18 months? No wait. Less than that.

I'm never moving to London. Far too dangerous.

Shellingbynight · 23/04/2025 16:04

Yeh there's no CCTV anywhere in London so criminals have carte blanche with the murdering and burying!

Southeastdweller · 23/04/2025 16:04

I don’t think any soap has portrayed (long term) a character with dementia. Frank’s mum had Alzheimer’s but we only saw that for a year or two. Chris Clenshaw said Nigel was back for a “long stint” so maybe a one year contract for the actor. A Christmas exit beckons.

OP posts:
Shellingbynight · 23/04/2025 16:11

Yes Frank's mum was a fairly long term dementia storyline. So was Sylvie Carter, she was in it for 3 years. She conveniently died by electrocuting herself.

Mike Baldwin has just died in Classic Corrie, he had Alzheimers but died within about 6 months as he conveniently had a heart attack. It was brilliantly done despite the compressed timeframe.

Eastie77Returns · 23/04/2025 16:34

The only sign Lola was ill was the head wrap she wore to hide her hair falling out.

They don’t like to show the really bad side of certain conditions. Mark (HIV) left on his motorbike when his drugs stopped working and died off screen.

the80sweregreat · 23/04/2025 16:39

Franks mum was good at playing someone with dementia. I had forgotten about her and Sylvie Carter too.
i wonder if they will have an assisted dying story with Phil and Nigel like they did with Dot and Ethel?

TortolaParadise · 23/04/2025 17:19

When he spoke to Jean it sounded as though he was contemplating suicide. Jean asked him to repeat himself.

Sad times ahead.😭

Shellingbynight · 23/04/2025 17:34

I guess you an episode behind? That was covered earlier this week.

TortolaParadise · 23/04/2025 17:44

I am agreeing with you. I think a suicide plot will negate the fact that Nigel could live for many years, therefore, script writers can potentially wrap the story line up quickly.

the80sweregreat · 23/04/2025 18:06

They might just say it’s Nigel’s heart and manage to make it part of the dying process or something like that. Agree that they won’t have him deteriorating for ten years or more. It’ll be a few months as part of their story and Julia’s theme at the end and a wake in the (new )Vic pub. (Although it won’t be ‘ new’ by the end of the year. )
I like Nigel though , it’ll be a sad time whatever they do with this. I just hope Phil is up to it all!

Eastie77Returns · 23/04/2025 18:14

Either that or he goes into some kind of assisted living / home. Phil can afford the fees. Julia’s theme as Nigel settles into his new place and says “bye Grant” to Phil who holds back tears and leaves.

the80sweregreat · 23/04/2025 18:20

Yolande has guilt tripped him into not putting him into residential care though.
It may have to happen eventually, but I think it’ll be a few weeks or months of them eating toasties and having a visit from half the square now and again to watch old horror films with him before the big decision where he’ll end his days I suppose once it’s too much
shame super Sonia is living it up in Bali , she’d be a shoo in for a concerned visit to ‘ see how it’s going ‘!

Bluesandwhites · 23/04/2025 21:11

Would Yolande like to look after Nigel? It' s none of her business, just that Nigel confided in her weeks ago . . . eventually. Yes, Phil has been guilt tripped.

Interesting that Sonia is still the Square's healthcare consultant, even though she's out of the country !

KateofGhent · 23/04/2025 21:16

Sonia may be E20's Florence Nightingale, but she can't spot a bad 'un ! She's not safe to be let out on her own, various members of her family have to look out for her.

Bunionbabe · 23/04/2025 22:31

I am finding the whole programme really depressing lately. I know EE isn't a bundle of laughs at the best of times but lately it's just so bleak, whole episodes on the Nigel problem. Also, does Phil ever take off that manky old leather jacket? Why does Jean wear skirts up to her bum and a knitted tea cosy on her head?

the80sweregreat · 24/04/2025 07:03

Jeans style has always been a bit eccentric ( with the odd nice cardigan thrown in occasionally)
A lot of the characters wear strange clothes / same clothes! One of EE’s many mysteries.

Southeastdweller · 24/04/2025 07:40

Honey’s clothes have always irrationally bothered me. They dress her as if she’s in her 90s.

OP posts:
Bunionbabe · 24/04/2025 07:55

I have a friend who's nearly 90 and this week she's wearing tropical print trousers, a bright pink top and New Balance trainers, also
multicoloured 😊. She wouldn't be seen in Honey's dreary outfits.
