Okay, so I know I am massively late to the party. But I just discovered this show and wow, what a show it is. I am currently bingeing my way through and am totally hooked!!! I am only on series 2 so far but almost at the end and have already downloaded all of series 3 ready!! I don't think I have loved a show like this for such a long time.

I am finding myself getting emotional most episodes. It gets me right in the feels and it has made me think of my parents, my own childhood, my own siblings, my kids and their childhoods and really reflect on my own life. I have never known a show do this to me before. So relatable in so many ways.

I just hope it stays as good and doesn't become a bit crap somewhere along the line. Please tell me it stays this awesome right to the end??

Brilliant show I loved it. Some slow episodes but on the whole really really good.

It blew my mind when I found at that Rebecca is played by Mandy Moore (one for us 90s pop niche people)

I did find it dipped around the Vietnam series but the ending was just brilliant

I was going to say the same about the Vietnam bits.

JoyousEagle · 21/02/2025 20:55

There's also a podcast called That Was Us, with Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Sterling K Brown (Randall) and Chris Sullivan (Toby) where they rewatch each episode and talk about it, with other cast members (including the teen children) and the creator coming on to talk about it.

Quite interesting to hear some of the behind the scenes stuff. Mandy Moore's prosthetics took hours!

I really wasn't a fan of William at all but can see I'm in the minority on this thread (& was on the main thread way back when too!)

He was one of my least favourite characters too, I think maybe because I couldn't relate to him in any way

ilovetomatoes · 21/02/2025 20:58

It’s the absolute best. I would get an eye roll from my husband and kids “oh, mummy’s watching her show again”. Yes, I am. Please leave me to it!

jealous you’re watching it for the first time!

Thunderpunt · 22/02/2025 15:25

OP - word of advice....take it slowly, don't binge it.. try to watch one episode a week, or two at most.

Once you've finished it, life will never be the same.

You will never have the chance to watch it for the first time again <nods sagely>

Figgygal · 22/02/2025 15:34

There's a lovely use of a billy joel song towards the end that I seek out when I need a cry

ruralwanderer · 22/02/2025 15:38

It's wonderful all the way to the end. I felt bereft when it finished. When you're done, move onto Paradise as it's a similar vibe (same director and Sterling Brown is the main character).

I am trying to but its just so good 😂I have watched one this morning as I had the house to myself for an hour while DH was getting up and in the shower. It was the one where Jack dies in the house fire and I was literally sobbing!! 😭

I have just watched the one where Jack dies in the house fire! 😭Oh my god what an emotional episode that was. When Rebecca was on the phone to the kids and all the medics were racing to his room in the background my heart was in my mouth. Poor Jack. 😢

Wow thanks for this.

I loved it all right to the end too.

My DH referred to it as 'This is interminable' 🤣 as I always seemed to be watching it.

This Is Us introduced me to the beautiful Landslide which is now my go to song when I need a good cry

JoyousEagle · 26/02/2025 19:28

There's a couple of really nice songs that I always remember from it.

Don't know what they're called but the one when the house is burning down "there is a house built out of stone.....I built a home, for you, for me"
And one that's played a couple of times I think "I love my father and I love him well. I hope to see him someday soon"

"I love my father and I love him well“ is from Some Day Soon by Alexi Murdoch. Lovely song.

DD’s class sang Landslide in her final primary school assembly. They played a montage of all the kids over the years from Reception to Y6 while they sang. The weeping in that assembly hall!!

I didn’t realise Mandy Moore is a very accomplished singer as is the actress who plays Kate and they performed some nice songs on the soundtrack album.

It's an absolutely gorgeous series. Like you, I cried, laughed and felt everything in between.

Literallynoonecares · 01/03/2025 10:40

Oh wow! This series just gets better and better. I am loving it so much. Currently not 100% loving the Vietnam storyline but everything else is just awesome.

I think it does dip a bit around the Vietnam series. But it gets better again.

One thing I like about it is that it stops after 6 seasons. Not that I wouldn't enjoy more, but it's nice that it quits while it's ahead. It's not one of those shows that, because it's popular, just keeps going and going (and going and going).

I love a show that knows when to wrap things up and walk away and leave it there. Nothing worse than ruining a series trying to do too much. I can't believe really how much I look forward to my daily 'This is Us' fix. I almost don't want to get to the end!! 😂I have lots of episodes left yet though thankfully 😅

I absolutely loved it!!
I watched it during COVID and my emotions were already heightened at that point anyway but my goodness the series was a rollercoaster of emotions, every series goes through different stages of life.
I remember one evening sobbing my eyes out watching it and my husband would come home from work and see me cry, he'd ask what's up thinking something serious had happened and I'd just say I'm watching "this is us". He'd never seen me so emotional, it really does make you look at life differently. He stopped asking what was wrong with me every time he saw the program on the tele 😂
I think I have to watch it again reading all the comments.

Eastie77Returns · 01/03/2025 12:25

I was so sad when it ended but also glad it ended at the right time and they didn’t try to eke out more seasons unnecessarily.

i know there were fans saying they should have continued with another season set in the future with the ‘new big three’ (Kevin’s twins and Kate’s son) plus the other kids and show the original three getting older but I don’t think it would have worked.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/03/2025 13:53

I've only seen up to Season 3 and my God does it bring up so much stuff. I'm an overweight woman, adopted at birth and mother of multiples, trapped as SAHM for many years. Flipping hell it was intense!! But then I guess it brings up many other issues too, losing a parent young, alcoholism, racial issues, war, that I can't relate to at all.

Mandi Moore is absolutely my girl crush, I can't get over how beautiful she is and she is an amazing singer, Tangled is my favourite Disney movie. I was very impressed with how she can also act. And I absolutely love Sterling L Brown as an actor, and his character Randall too.

I am currently on season 3 but have all seasons downloaded so making my way through them. It is an intense watch and really emotional so not something I can binge watch too many of in one go as I would be emotionally exhausted by the end of the day 😂There are so many things covered that viewers should be able to find at least one thing they can personally relate to. I related to it straight away because I lost my son, my first baby, shortly after birth. Its heavy going so I am going to get to the end of season 3 and take a weeks break from it and then come back to it. But wow, its just such a great show.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 01/03/2025 18:33

Actually I would say that the end of series 3 is a good place for a break. I have only watched the first episode of series 4 but it introduces 3 new characters (well sort of) but there are clearly new storylines to come.

Cryingatthegym · 27/03/2025 20:17

I've just finished watching this and I'm bereft. I sobbed my heart out at the penultimate episode. I think it might be the best show I've ever seen.

I've been watching it fairly slowly over the past 5/6 months right after separating from my ex husband. It's been exactly the comfort I needed. God I'm going to miss it.
