It is definitely making me emotional that it's been 40 years since it all started!
Looking forwards to today's one.

storminabuttercup · 13/02/2025 09:30

I absolutely loved tonight's episode, i know Philth has been awful in the past but I felt so sad for him

The football quiz was only so they could show Jarrod Bowen on screen who is Danny Dyers daughter's partner in real life and plays for West ham.
Arthur, Stacey's boy , looked different! Although we haven't seen him properly in a while to be fair.
Radio times has some lovely photos of ' Walford women ' I don't buy it normally , but just had to splash out for these features.
Gillian ( Kathy ) was told she'd be a household name in 85 , her dad said to her ' what, like demostos is' ! Love the east end humour .. lol

Confused by Arthur because he is Kush’s son and the boy they cast when he was younger reflected that but this older version has a completely different skin tone!

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 13/02/2025 11:03

I love the young Phil! He must have really studied Steve McFadden.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 11:32

I'm in bits .. well done Steve McFadden
A true legend
What a fantastic episode

Anotheremptynester · 13/02/2025 11:59

I watched this with complete focus, it really gripped me. What an amazing episode. How can they be so rubbish when it comes to Biancas storyline but really top class when it comes to Phils. So odd.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 12:17

Phil led me on his journey today. What was happening in his head , how he felt
I found it really moving tbh.
He was so credible.

NowNumber5 · 13/02/2025 13:35

Oh Phil! 😭

What a brilliant episode, very emotional 😢

I go away from Easties sometimes, but get sucked in by big storylines (the six!) and I often feel the pull of Sharon and Ian - we're the same age, we were at school together and there's something about familiarity with a long relationship with a fictional character that acts as a kind of touchstone with me - the passage of 40 years, how my life isn't what I thought it would be when I was 17 and a relief that I haven't had all the marriages, trauma, homelessness, severe MH episodes, attempted murders, actual murder of relatives, imprisonment and people returning from the grave that Sharon and Ian have.

Shellingbynight · 13/02/2025 13:56

Steve McF is such a brilliant actor, I am looking forward to this episode.

I meant to say re Arthur, what a beautiful child - then I remembered his father is Kush so that makes sense! I don't think we've seen Arthur for ages.

NowNumber5 · 13/02/2025 13:57

Young Phil was particularly excellent.
I would watch a series of The Mitchells, be fascinating to see how Phil and Grant (and little Sam) spent their youth, and how that shaped their characters in later years.
Jaime Winstone is young Peggy - bravo 👏

milesmachine · 13/02/2025 14:23

I echo everyone else that todays is a fantastic episode and the casting of young Mitchells is spot on. And Grant appearing at the end-woohoo! Bring on next week!

BUT Phil essentially came clean to Jay and almost in tears talking about how grey his life is and how he shouldn't really be alive and then Jay says 'you're alright though innit?' And leaves??!!! If someone talked like that to anyone in real life you'd be genuinely concerned!

Shellingbynight · 13/02/2025 14:50

It is really bizarre how some people like Jay really don't seem to 'get it'. Maybe people are like that in real life too, but I'd hate to think so.😧

Endersduffduff · 13/02/2025 14:53

Jay needs to give his head a wobble.

The rest of the episode today was brilliant.

And Grant! All the love still for Grant. “Ello, Bruv.”

Giantjoelguesser · 13/02/2025 15:01

I agree the young Phil and Grant were superbly cast. The young Phil even had a resemblance to Ben, I never thought Ben looked like Phil until now.
I had a tear in my eye when they showed Grant at the end, this surprised me as I'm not a Grant fan. Just proves what an emotive episode it is.
I also had the same view on the Jay scene. It felt out of character because I'm sure Jay would have been more concerned. It would have been better if it was jumpers, considering he doesn't know Phil well.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 13/02/2025 16:10

Aw loving the original credits being used!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 13/02/2025 16:24

Young Phil is just like him! Brilliant.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 16:33

I just sobbed my way through that one
Phil was Feeling pink and grey inside like a dead bird.
He does have friends and ones who care , but he can't reach out easily to them.
His little speech was just brilliant, so moving. I know he is deeply flawed , but I felt so sorry for him today.

LetThereBeLove · 13/02/2025 16:37

I must be the only one who's watched today's episode and hated it! Possibly cos I remember the original Peggy, Grant and Phil so well and this trip down memory lane was just 😩.
Also hate the Reiss/Bianca storyline - it is just stupid and unbelievable that she could be imprisoned in a lock up for weeks on end.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 16:39

No, I can understand why some might not rate it today , but I think his acting was so powerful and so well done and I just understood how he was feeling.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 16:42

One negative though , Jamie's wig as a young Peggy was a bit over the top ..
Phil's nasty dad was his I imagined him , but they showed him before being horrible

Giantjoelguesser · 13/02/2025 16:57

I can understand some not liking it. I could pick faults, i didn't like the Peggy portrayal for a start and many have mentioned Jay, but I think overall it was done well.
I don't remember the Mitchell's house/ early years. I was born in 1985 so my memories are from the 90s, I thought the Mitchell's just turned up one day on the square or were just always based on the square. I think if I had a strong memory of their original house etc then i may not have enjoyed it. I don't remember there ever being a child Sam, I thought she started as a teenager

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 17:00

Sam came into it as a teenager.
Barbara Windsor didn't play their Mum originally it was someone else.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 17:02

I do recall the brothers buying ' the arches ' together and moving into the square
My mum nicknamed them ' pinky and perky ' lol
She wasn't keen especially with how Grant treated Sharon ( and Tiffany )

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2025 17:04

Jay just didn't ' get it' did he!
Lots of people struggle to understand mental health issues.
