Exciting update from MNHQ! Series writer Grace Ofori-Attah will be joining us this week to answer your questions about the Playing Nice series. Post your questions for Grace on this thread.

Playing Nice is available to stream now on ITVX

We’re teaming up with ITV to bring you a live watch-along of Playing Nice, their gripping new drama that’s bound to have everyone talking. We’ll be watching right alongside you, so hop into the thread and share your thoughts, theories, and reactions in real time and be in with the chance of winning a £200 voucher for a store of your choice.

Here’s the setup (brace yourself): Set against the stunning Cornish coastline, Playing Nice follows two couples as they uncover a heart-wrenching secret - their toddlers were accidentally switched at birth. Now, they face an impossible decision: keep the children they’ve loved and raised, or reclaim their biological child.

It’s tense, emotional, and we’re betting it’ll spark some heated debate. What would you do in their shoes? Let’s unravel it together - don’t forget the popcorn.

Trigger warning: Playing Nice doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, including family separation, identity, postpartum depression, emotional trauma, and domestic abuse, which some viewers may find distressing

So the nursery sent Theo home for hitting another child? Surely that's an every day occurrence with young children.

Exactly what me and my husband said to each other - no way would nursery send them home, our nursery just gives you the disappointed talk at pick up 😂

Jellykat · 05/01/2025 22:02

Bingo... as we thought! Bastard

Yep! When my oldest was in nursery it was the "chat" at end of day.

SisterMaryLuke · 05/01/2025 22:05

Well that was very annoying and silly. Won't be wasting time watching any more episodes.

BeckyAMumsnet · 05/01/2025 22:05

Bastards! We were right not to trust him from the get go.

So is thumping Theo just a typical preschooler acting up because of all the upheaval or is this a foreshadowing that he's a mini-Miles and all Machiavellian and will grow up to steal the moon? Definitely some early nature v nurture themes emerging in episode one I reckon.

And OMG whyyyyy tell them about the hospital? Arrrrrrrgh. I was shouting at the TV. Can't decide if Pete is naive or is one of those very nice, easygoing people who can't wrap his head around someone else being evil. Or both.

Comeonow · 05/01/2025 22:06

I’m screaming so much of what’s already been said!
ignoring the “would that really happen” moments, I’d be screaming at Pete taking the son straight over to them and no way would that monitor be even inside my house!

Wallasey123 · 05/01/2025 22:09

Ok, I actually really liked it. Was an easy watch with some poignant bits 😅 Defo had some unrealistic and a bit silly parts but it was entertaining.

So thoughts:
-Miles is fucking A LOT. Dunno why Pete was so pathetic around him and didn't just tell him to back off with the visits and gifts
-Lucy clearly completely controlled by Miles. I'm predicting/hoping she gets her moment in the end and leaves him
-the scene where David hugs Maddie goodbye ❤️
-the flashback to the hospital: Maddie not being able to breasfeed her preemie actually made me feel uneasy (in a good way) as that was my experience and defo hit close to home
-the restaurant scene was SO AWKWARD. I did say out loud how can you be that bad at lying on the spot and DP turned around and reminded me that he is in fact THAT bad so actually it's possible 😅

I really hope Pete and Maddie wise up quick though! They seem really naive

Wallasey123 · 05/01/2025 22:13

Also anyone else love Maddie’s vibe and wardrobe in this? I know we love James Norton but I think Niamh Algar might be the winner for me here.

Hope she decks Miles

Freeasabird76 · 05/01/2025 22:13

God I want to do Miles an injury!!!

GrandTheftWalrus · 05/01/2025 22:15

Fuck it im going to watch the 2nd one see if it improves any.

Jellykat · 05/01/2025 22:18

Little David clearly needs rescuing, praying Pete and Maddy end up with both boys

BeckyAMumsnet · 05/01/2025 22:20

Thanks for watching with us. 👀See you tomorrow at 9 pm for more creepy Miles.

GrandTheftWalrus · 05/01/2025 22:22

DH said when they got the letter saying they wanted both boys that he'd move where they couldn't find him.

MoominMamma15 · 05/01/2025 22:24

Is it just me with my dodgy ears or did Pete’s accent start off very plain English but then go into full on Cornish then switch to a mix of both??

Wallasey123 · 05/01/2025 22:30

@BeckyAMumsnet I need to see more but I really really hope that Theo isn’t a mini psycho Miles.

Based on no evidence apart from my experience with how different my DCs are to each other and how different I am to my siblings I think nature trumps nurture most of the time (obvs nurture helps)

Has anyone read the book? It's brilliant. I love JP Delaney.

I have to spread out reading his books - find them VERY intense - but the tv dramatisation wasn't really having the same impact at all! All felt quite predictable, which isn't my experience of his books - but haven't read this one.

It doesn’t! My husband said ‘why are channel 5 dramas always so bad?’. I then pointed out it’s not on C5, but it has a similar vibe. Starts off relatively promising, gets silly very quickly.

He's been Welsh, Irish, Cornish and RP so far....

MoleAndBadger · 05/01/2025 22:42

I've given up and won't be watching the remaining episodes.

oddbox · 05/01/2025 22:47

A good Sunday night drama in my opinion! Will be watching tomorrow night. Hope Pete and Maddie can toughen up quickly (mainly Pete!). Also interested to see how Lucy’s character unfolds!

Wallasey123 · 05/01/2025 22:52

I have to watch them all now to see Miles get his comeuppance and I’m guessing that won’t be until episode 4 😭

Lellamir · 05/01/2025 23:05

Well, that was disappointing.
I don't share the Mumsnet love for James Norton, though.
Cornwall was the best thing about it, and the boys were cute.

Dh has started watching videos on his phone as he's raging at miles.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/01/2025 23:15

It’s unusual not to have James Norton as the baddie but Miles was so creepy!

AlleycatMarie · 05/01/2025 23:16

I’m really undecided after episode one whether this is any good or not. Some of the writing is a bit off. But I’m intrigued enough to watch part two and if it gets better I’m prepared to overlook the parts that are just not factually accurate.
