Here’s the setup (brace yourself): Set against the stunning Cornish coastline, Playing Nice follows two couples as they uncover a heart-wrenching secret - their toddlers were accidentally switched at birth. Now, they face an impossible decision: keep the children they’ve loved and raised, or reclaim their biological child.

It’s tense, emotional, and we’re betting it’ll spark some heated debate. What would you do in their shoes? Let’s unravel it together - don’t forget the popcorn.

Trigger warning: Playing Nice doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, including family separation, identity, postpartum depression, emotional trauma, and domestic abuse, which some viewers may find distressing

The cliff scene was intense! Miles got what he deserved - awful man.

A great drama! Second two episodes much better than the first in my opinion.

Ok so I binged the lot and have thoughts…

1: how did Pete forget he was a journalist? If he was working for the Washington Post back in the day Nixon would still be president

2: Miles 💯 set the house on fire

3: Theo will grow up and murder them all

4: if I was Maddie I would never forgive Lucy. If it wasn’t for her being utterly batshit, none of this cliff pushing, psycho Miles business would have been necessary.

bendmeoverbackwards · 13/01/2025 23:37

Still don’t completely understand why Lucy did it. What with all the whispering and mumbling I couldn’t hear the dialogue properly.

tilypu · 14/01/2025 08:38

I thought the ending was a bit 'meh' honestly. It was an easy option. Would have preferred something a bit 'jucier', maybe Miles getting his comeuppance due to something relating to his brother/mother. Having said that, I know it's based on a book, so they might have been constrained by that.

It was ok, maybe a 6/10.

Lucy was in a domestic abuse situation and in the spur of the moment, wanted to protect her biological child from that household, so when the nurse asked which child was hers, she said the other one, hoping her real son would be taken care of by Pete and Maddie.

What I found frustrating was how they all seemed to be able to just track each others locations on their phones!

Miles was such a cartoon villain I half expected a big puff of smoke and some foreboding music every time he appeared on screen. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he was hoofed off the cliff but I would have preferred if the ending wasn't tied up so neatly. What, so they're going to carry on with their weird set up? I think Pete's brain has some kind of satellite delay so he'll cop on that Lucy is a dodge pot too maybe in about three months.

Oh wow!

The series was great - but a really hard watch throughout with some intense themes.

How would Grace describe it in three words?

Ooh amazing! I’ll get thinking of a question!

Wallasey123 · 14/01/2025 11:20

No way!! I have a couple of qs 😅

-Considering the main theme of the show and your clinical background (did a bit of Miles stalking myself, sorry!) what is your take on the nature vs. nurture debate?

-did your clinical background/experience inform some of the things we saw in the show? There were moments where I wanted to scream at Pete to get it together but then I also think of silly things I’ve done under stress and think perhaps I was quick to judge his character.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 14/01/2025 11:27

I’ve only watched the first episode so far. I loved the Cornish setting and it left me with a proper creepy feeling for hours after. I’m not convinced by the utter passivity of James Nesbitt’s character. I like his wife; I think she’s much more believable.

tilypu · 14/01/2025 11:35

How much freedom were you given to deviate from the plot of the book? To what extent the author involved in the development of the adaptation?

What did you find hardest about adapting the novel for the small screen?

Angelofmycoins · 14/01/2025 14:33

I'd like to know was Grace involved in casting and did she like the choices of actors?

Incognito1975 · 14/01/2025 17:55

A great story and well acted but the obscene language put me off. Seems like every drama I watch nowadays has to include the F word ( if not worse). In my world that is not language that is used by anyone.

Bixterret · 05/01/2025 17:33

Having watched 40 mins, I'd say don't bother, it's all predictable, not gripping at all. Switched off.

It has a twist you won't expect..

Jellykat · 14/01/2025 19:57

@Bixterret keep going with it imo, it steadily heats up

Comeonow · 14/01/2025 20:08

I got too involved with my blood pressure took a few blows from all the drama, in a good way though! The ending was perfect for me I needed a happy ending! but how does everyone cope with all the obvious holes in the unfolding drama having to fit in with time and budget restrictions?

CheshireCat1 · 15/01/2025 10:07

Loved the series, great performances from the cast. I thought the final episode was a bit of a let down, so far away from reality. I think the storyline would have been better and more realistic if more emphasis was put on the legal battle.

1mabon · 15/01/2025 11:52

The ending was very disappointing for me. The bad guy should have been sent to jail instead of falling off a cliff. Also, what the dickens was the point of his mother being in the drama? She didn't do anything.

I must have missed that bit.

It was clear from the outset Miles was after keeping both kids and would manipulate things to prove Pete and Maddie weren't responsible parents.

Maybe mention spoiler alert 😒

She helped Lucy to understand even more that miles was a beast.

(The ending in the book is very different by the way)

Zone2NorthLondon · 15/01/2025 23:20

Come on,complaints about spoilers? Its a schlocky predictable drama and we are all only posting for chance of winning £200

Miles may of fallen off the cliff but we didn’t see the body and there was no funeral, therefore he will be back. Well that’s my way of thinking.
Shame the mother did happen to speak to the court one way or another.

Choccyp1g · 16/01/2025 10:53

Can anyone remember, which of the babies was most likely to not survive?
I could see the logic of Lucy thinking "Maddie's baby will die, so it would be better for that one to risk abuse and let mine go to a loving home"
