Amandaland to replace motherland!

Just found out that a spinoff to motherland is in the works. I'm sooo excited! One of my favourite shows ever. It's going to be based around Amanda's character, following her life after divorce.

I like Amanda and Joanna Lumley is perfect as her mum, Anne is brilliant too but I am finding it hard to warm to the new characters.

It's dream casting, isn't it?

LatinForTelly · 08/02/2025 15:22

Watched a few of these last night. Wasn't expecting to like it much as thought Motherland was only good in places, and too exaggerated generally (Liz and Kevin the best).

I am loving this though. The script is brilliant - wittier than ML - and the characters don't overact. I think they're all great. Only tiny niggle is that Amanda should have Anne in her phone as Anne Car Share like in motherland. I also think Georgie and Manus are great. Kids so often over-act but they really don't. And yes, JL absolutely brilliant. "This is Della, of Shin fame". <deadpan> "Sinn Fein?" Grin

Really enjoying this. Amanda and Ann were my favourite characters from Motherland and Joanna Lumley is fab.

I wonder what happened to Anne's people carrier?

I didn’t mind it. It just felt that there were characters missing. You need more of a range, there needs to be someone you can identify with. In Motherland you could identify with different aspects of each character. There is nothing likeable about Amanda, and Ann is annoying.

Also, that’s not how charging electric cars works.

Agree. I was hoping they would make Amanda more likeable or add more depth to her but it was still the same Amanda -- in Motherland Xmas episode she is more likeable.

I didn't find anything funny tho.

When Joanna Lumley was on screen I thought "Here's more Joanna Lumley", not here is Amanda's mum.

iamsoshocked · 08/02/2025 18:37

is there a 4th series of Motherland somewhere?

duc748 · 08/02/2025 18:51

There's this, from last March, unless something's changed:

Just loved this! Lucy Punch and Joanna Lumley are nailing it. Great delivery.

Good new characters too. The two guys awkwardly navigating (step)parenting Ned were terrific. I find Della the chef very funny.

I like the way the action has segued from school gates to football pitch, which is normal when the children are teens. And from pool party to house party.

I do feel that Anne’s daftness (“your highness”) and the whole “been with husband since age 13” thing doesn’t really work in light of her chemistry phd from Imperial but I can let that go.

tennissquare · 08/02/2025 19:28

@MayfairRose , episode 1 is the weakest, I'm on my second watch, episodes 3 & 4 are my favourite!

And she was international product development manager for Glaxo SmithKline - the PhD helps with that

Just watched episode two. Much better. I love the awkward relationship between the two men. The stepdad seems to be a Kevin replacement.

(DH must be alone in the demographic of people who got both the Crème de la Mer, and the Acorn computers references. But I expect there isn’t much of an expensive moisturiser and 80s computing crossover).

PattyDukeAstin · 08/02/2025 22:36

I love Motherland but wasn't sure about this. Other than the step-dad none of the additional characters are likable or funny. I must admit I haven't watched further than the car boot sale in episode two. Really don't understand the love.

LatinForTelly · 08/02/2025 23:42

I'm another skincare/tech nerd who got both @TheDowagerCountessofPembroke !

Aww PattyDuke, Mal is lovely! Just watched the car boot one again. "We're going to need a bigger boot" and "Your parasol is encroaching on the walkway, and that is a naked flame, and this WHOLE SCENARIO is like the opening sequence of an episode of Casualty." 😂

GreenClock · 08/02/2025 23:59

I’ve only just realised that the Mal actor was also Fingers in Gavin & Stacey. I’ve just watched the episode where they all went clubbing in Cardiff for the first time since it first aired about 15 years ago (Neil the Baby was a baby).

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 09/02/2025 06:20

That’s where I know him from! I knew I recognised him!

SparklingJoyous · 09/02/2025 07:33

I enjoyed the series overall but not keen at all on the drug use. Bizarre why they thought that needed to be included.

Ah that’s who he is.

PheasantPluckers · 09/02/2025 10:05

I'm halfway through and liking it - I wasn't sure I would. She's the Mrs Bucket of the 2020s, isn't she? There's even a trailing friend and exasperated neighbour to boot.

Love Mal - the relationship with JJ is actually really sweet and Joanna Lumly is great.

Shin Fame 😂

Really? We used Acorn computers in the 80s at primary school! I didn't think it was that out there.

Ah my husband insisted he was in Gavin and Stacey but I didn't recognise him!

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 09/02/2025 13:30

Caught part of the 1st episode was amusing not laugh out loud funny but a nice easy going distraction

duc748 · 08/02/2025 15:10

Did any of you guys watch Bloods? Lucy Punch was great in that. I don't think it got a lot of love, but I thought it was pretty funny. And I love Jane Horrocks.

Yes! I mentioned this at work when we were talking about Lucy Punch and no one else had heard of it!

SantasLargerHelper · 09/02/2025 13:47

I am absolutely loving this, very funny 😁

As an old raver, I think the drugs references are funny and real tbh.

It made sense in the first episode, the comedy there is all about Amanda being uncomfortable in the company of the absurdly libertine Della and Fi. She is so desperate to get in with the in crowd that she turns a blind eye to kids drinking, tells Morten that her Ketamine shirt is cool and pretends to eat the magic mushrooms

Ah my husband insisted he was in Gavin and Stacey but I didn't recognise him!

He is also in the advert where they almost shred the paper for the tv license.

and in a comedy series called witless that I thought was really good
