Just found out that a spinoff to motherland is in the works. I'm sooo excited! One of my favourite shows ever. It's going to be based around Amanda's character, following her life after divorce.

I love motherland. Not interested in Amanda. Sounds a bit cringe.

Puygo · 19/05/2024 12:23

Oh I am looking forward to this. I am sure it will be quite entertaining and watchable, although obviously not as good as motherland

likepebblesonabeach · 19/05/2024 14:17

I'll miss motherland. Hopefully the spin off will be good but I feel I'll miss Anne, Liz and Kevin & Mrs Lamb

springsimmer · 19/05/2024 15:10

Kevin and Liz are definitely the best 2 characters!

MaryFuckingFerguson · 20/05/2024 19:06

Hmm. I hope it’s good. Amanda was a great character, but I’m not sure if she’s enough to carry the show onwards. I couldn’t stand that wet weekend Anne.

Joanna Lumley was perfect as Amanda’s ghastly mum, so I hope she’s back.

Motherland was pretty perfect imo, especially Julia. I think it will be hard to do a spin-off. But people probably said the same about Cheers and look what happened there!

Xmasbaby11 · 20/05/2024 19:23

Oh no, what an odd choice. Amanda was the worst and least realistic character imo, the only one I didn’t recognise any elements of in people I know.

FlouncingSaffron · 20/05/2024 19:29

Do other Ed Reardon fans out there also have a hard time wrapping your head round the fact that it's Ping who is one of Motherland/Amandaland's scriptwriters?!

(i.e. the very talented Barunka O'Shaunessy)

duc748 · 24/05/2024 11:29

Would have loved more Motherland, such a cracking show. I share PP's misgivings, but of course I'll be looking in.

Bells3032 · 24/05/2024 11:49

I feel like this will be like the "Joey" spin off from friends. it's just too much of one, quite highly characteratured, character. and it becomes irritating

GreenClock · 02/06/2024 20:42

I hope it’s more Frasier than Joey.

Perhaps Anna Maxwell Martin and Paul Ready couldn’t commit to it so they’ve decided to rebrand it.

Yes to Mrs Lamb! Perhaps she could have moved to a admin role at the secondary school.

chaosmaker · 16/01/2025 14:19

Lucy Punch and Joanna Lumley were mother and daughter back in Ella Enchanted. Obviously the casting directors loved the pairing :)

Crikey, I knew so many Amandas.

That show was almost anthropology!

Very well observed.

Sharon Horgan says there’ll be new parents featured, so maybe it’ll be a bit ‘motherland-y’ rather than being the Amanda show, which would get very tedious quite quickly.

After a brief spell of freedom, Anne (Philippa Dunne) is sucked back into being Amanda’s minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children’s new school.

I didn't know there was a social scene with the other parents at secondary school. Primary school yes.

ChestnutGrove · 16/01/2025 14:45

I didn't recognise Amanda among the mums at our primary school either. I assumed it was a middle class Londoner thing. She did very much seem like a caricature in the earlier episodes, although became more sympathetic as it progressed.

PumpkinScarf · 16/01/2025 14:53

Sounds fun! I’ll give it a go, my least favourite character is Julia by far so I’ll be happy if she’s not in it which looks likely.

Freespirit44 · 16/01/2025 18:52

I can't wait! I recognise Amanda's character from our school gates. Kevin was my favourite though. Julias character is too hysterical for me. I get that she's portraying the frazzled working mum, all balls in the air type but she was ruthless and I couldn't sympathise with her.
Love Joanna Lumley in everything.

I didn't recognise Amanda from my naice leafy suburb of Belfast. I sure did from the naice leafy part of Dublin I grew up in though. Grin

Ah fab. Thanks @mum2jakie

MidnightBloom · 16/01/2025 22:39

Really looking forward to seeing this. I loved Amanda.

Also my dh and friends said at the time how like Amanda I am Confused

GreenClock · 17/01/2025 00:30

Really glad that Anne is returning.

I recognise one from my part of mayo 😆 🤣 not even a naice leafy suburb

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 18/01/2025 22:23

I recognise all of them! Julia was a mum in dc reception class who at the initial meet and greet said she needed to ‘network’ with the other parents. I was probably most like Anne to start with. People were shocked where I went to school and that I’d gone to university and was a solicitor. Clearly what I did, didn’t match what I looked like!

definitely looking forward yo this.
