I love that Betty and James only had about £1.48 left!

I know the boys won, but morally I think Eugenie and Isabel won , I am amazed at Eugenies energy and persistence, and the way they managed to keep up with the boys time, and manage to enjoy the countries and experiences that they had.

Why morally the girls win? They took Stephen and Viv's taxi, lied about budget to boys.
They were smart about budget and were able to afford taxis more than others. If it was not night time, boys would have taken the ferry 4 hours before them. I am impressed 20 years old could plan so well. Eugenie and Isabel were in bad mood with each other half the times. Everyone seemed to enjoy the race, in specially S and V.

This is driving me mad. Just watched final episode. Why did Alfie and Owen need to change money? Teams haven't been shown doing this before?

BoobyDazzler · 01/06/2024 06:27

I guess the production team have interpreters on each leg who ask the people they speak to if they’re happy to be on tv and some may not, so they aren’t included in the show but their help is welcomed.

I’ve only recently discovered RATW and have binge watched all series in a few weeks. There was at least one series where they were shown changing currency. I think there’s just lots that they don’t have time to show.

I didn’t enjoy this series as much as the first couple of series.

I think it was because they still had some sterling, which would be useless, and they wanted to change all their money to local currency. I guess they haven’t shown it before because it hasn’t been interesting before.

I think we have seen change of currency before - it makes sense they are visiting different countries after all.

Willmafrockfit · 01/06/2024 08:12

We have in the first series, I expect there is a huge amount left out

Willmafrockfit · 01/06/2024 08:13

Tbh in the reunion I was surprised they managed to find so much footage of Isabel smiling

BiscuitTins · 01/06/2024 08:27

Thanks to the previous poster who recommended the Jen and Rob travel talk podcast.
Lots of insight into the race and the challenges
I might have to season 2 again now 😃

Presumably it’s not normally that hard! We definitely have seen teams finding currency exchanges before. It’s not normally worth showing if they just walk up to one.

I don’t think it’s rigged as much as some posters are suggesting. In previous series we’ve seen people not complete due to running out of money, and finding the team in front at the end. It is obviously edited from the thousands of hours of footage they have to tell a particular story.

eleanorwish · 01/06/2024 09:03

I'm glad Alfie and Owen won! I know a lot of the attention has been on Alfie because of the loss of his mother, but Owen is really impressive too. To have struggled so much with anxiety in the past, and now be training to be a pilot.

It's been shown in the past, in previous series iirr.
We just don't see all of this stuff due to the programmes being squished into 1 hour long episodes.

I'd love to have more episodes and more detail ideally.

I was wondering about this too because I thought the whole point of the challenge was to do it with the budget you are given and top that up by working. So if they were changing sterling into local currency what's to stop all contestants just taking loads of their own cash to change?

Because those are the rules. Of course you're not allowed to bring along extra cash.

The original budget is handed over in sterling and converted at local bureaux as and when, but they tend not to show that because it's dull. I guess they must get a certain amount of wastage on the currencies as they move from one country to another: I'd actually find that too stressful to watch, but that's just a personal quirk.

OutOfTheHouse · 01/06/2024 12:27

They get given the original budget in sterling.
There would be no point changing the whole lot to Yen in Japan because they would only be in Japan for so long and it costs money every time. So you would change a few hundred pounds to Yen and keep the rest as Stirling. The next country you would change the Yen and some more Stirling and so on. There is no point changing all the money every time.

OP posts:
HoHoHoliday · 01/06/2024 12:36

Oh! That makes sense. It actually never occurred to me that they get their budget in sterling, I just assumed they were given a bit of each country's currency.

HoHoHoliday · 01/06/2024 12:39

I do also wonder how long the programme can go on with using only cash, before they switch to a pre-loaded card. They have already encountered problems where they cannot pay for tickets and stuff in cash.
Sad though. I confess I am 90% card user so I can't complain, but equally I'd be sad to see cash disappear from society.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/06/2024 12:42

There were also a few times they had to book tickets online. I assume in future series that could become more of an issue.

Let's say they are filming 16hrs a day (it's probably 18 but I'm being generous). Multiply that by say 5 days for a leg, across 5 teams. That's 400 HOURS (320 once down to 4 teams) of potential footage per episode!

Only a fraction of their footage gets used in the final broadcast. There's also all the times where people refuse to be on TV which they can't show.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/06/2024 21:35

I wondered why the public's faces were often blurred — is that the norm for broadcasting in some countries?

They don't blur background faces on, say, Bargain Hunt when they're at a car boot sale.

Because if you are at a car boot being filmed there will be signs up saying it’s being filmed and that by being there you are consenting to being on the show. I was at Heathrow Airport a while ago and there were signs up.

Finally watched the end. Pleased for the boys but wanted Betty and James to win.

Isobel’s language skills were phenomenal.

Alfie must’ve just been travelling constantly!

NCTDN · 07/06/2024 09:27

I've started watching series one again! It's interesting watching the route through Europe.

I’ve been in situations in the UK where the minority do not want to be filmed so they have a large sticker to wear to help with editing. Also on BH years ago I’ve seen people blurred out or filmed in such a way that their faces do not really show.
