Second thread about the BBC Series.

i wish the siblings had won, the "boys" were really irritating. they are grown men, yet everyone talks about them like they are children.
they also lied about their budget.

It's not their fault people talk about them like that though. One of them is training to be a pilot and could be flying you away on holiday very soon - not a child.

ShillyShallySherbet · 30/05/2024 08:58

Such a great series. I wanted Betty and James to win but knew that was very unlikely. They were unlucky/careless to lose some of their money and then their passports during the race and I wonder if that affected the outcome for them. The way they handled those set backs and didn’t get angry with one another made them my favourites though. Glad they finished at all in the end!

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2024 09:06

Great ending, delighted for Betty and James after all they went through. I was waiting for STeve and Viv to mention last week’s taxi nicking incident but they never brought it up on the reunion show. Unless I missed it? Especially when Eugenie was having a go at Alfie and Owen. Confused

Willmafrockfit · 30/05/2024 09:37

they mentioned the taxi business on itv this morning programme
it wasnt anyone in particular's taxi

I’m glad the boys beat the women who lied about their finances and nicked the taxi in the previous episode. Cheats never prosper.

Yes this.

I was surprised that in the reunion show Eugenie was still banging on about James lying about where the bus was going and saying how this had messed with her mind for a bit. But how is that any different to her lying about their finances to the boys, who were definitely taken in by it.

I think the taxi stealing has been explained upthread as not being as clear cut as it was shown to be.

OutOfTheHouse · 30/05/2024 11:12

Watching the reunion program now. So interesting. I’m amazed at Steve and Viv saying that they did a 2.5 mile walk to prepare and they were stiff the next day. I walk at least 2.5 miles every day, I’m not that much younger than them. Why would you take part in something like this if you struggle to walk that far.

But didn't they do it with the huge backpacks on?

They didn't lie about their budget though? That was Eugenie & Isobel who lied about being short on money in the final leg.

I'm intrigued as to why the times of arrival were blurred out unless it was just a clumsy way of blurring out the signatures.

It may have been the times they were blurring out as they previously haven't blurred out the signatures on previous series or the times (well certainly not in series 1 &2 because I've just checked).

I wondered if there were some shenanigans with this one because they like to show each individual team arriving at the final checkpoint and them opening the book. As O&A were so close to E&I I find it difficult to believe they hadn't already seen O&A at the checkpoint along the beach. Obviously they film O&A winning and having a bit of a celebration but have then got to get them and their camera team off the beach so E&I can have their moment. I thought maybe they stopped E&I before they got on the beach to do whatever they needed to with A&O so when E&I signed the book it was with the genuine time they arrived because they'd been delayed for filming purposes. At the end the run down it said that they were were 8 minutes behind which wouldn't have tallied with the time they wrote in the book so they decided to blur it out because it wasn't fair that the time showed they were half an hour (for example) behind through no fault of theirs when they were actually only 8 minutes? Not sure if that makes sense?

Alfie's friends and family must have been suspicious as he has since, i believe, done a lot of travelling, norway etc.,

postiealwaysknocks · 30/05/2024 11:59

Although it's good Eugenie & Isobel had this shared experience and made some memories etc I think there are fundamental differences between them; a low level antipathy. I would suggest they don't go travelling together again really!

Betty & James have really developed a nice sibling bond which I think they can build on. The clips of James earlier in the series being thrilled by the prospect of beer and boxing showed him as a bit of a typical lad but he seemed more sensitive and mature by the end of the race.

I warmed to Steve as time went by. He's obviously a bit crass but he treats Viv like a queen and didn't get arsey about the criticism thrown at him. As PP have said, I think for them it was more about enjoying the adventure. By the size of their house they don't need the money!

I know the reunion show has to include the couple who were disqualified but I'd kind of forgotten about Sharon & Brydie. They didn't seem very motivated by the idea of 'racing' tbh so can't imagine they would have won if they'd stayed in.

Anyway, that's my penny's worth. Glad the boys won. What are we going to do Weds evenings now?? When's the next celeb version on the tele?

HoHoHoliday · 30/05/2024 12:01

I've heard so many times, many sources, re many programmes, that the winners don't actually receive the prize money until after the episode is broadcast. It's to ensure the contestants don't give away the ending etc.

So when Alfie/Owen (don't know which is which) reeled off all the countries he's travelled to over the past few months I thought well he's not struggling for money then! Presumably has an inheritance from his mother.

Though to be fair to him, he said a few times that he wanted to win for the sake of winning rather than for the prize money.

diian · 30/05/2024 12:16

He probably make a nice bit on tik tok to be able to travel.

NCTDN · 30/05/2024 13:22

I properly cried when Alfie and Owen won. So pleased that the siblings made it to the end - good job she didn't get that packet of crisps! I'm glad they all got to the end though. I actually warmed to Steve by the end.

NCTDN · 30/05/2024 13:34

Have the winners been in any interviews today ?

Have the winners been in any interviews today ?

They were on BBC Breakfast this morning: at about 9.15.

NCTDN · 30/05/2024 16:32

Is it worth watching?

Same age as my DS - he’s def not in adult mode yet despite doing a challenging degree

prettybird · 30/05/2024 18:25

The BBC Breakfast interview was rather sweet.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 30/05/2024 19:29

I liked what they said about their relationship being shown authentically. I very much get the impression that what you see is what you get with them - which is why Alfie in particular sometimes comes across as quite unfiltered! In contrast I reckon there’s so much going on under the surface with E and I.

Samcro · 30/05/2024 08:15

I think you are in a tiny minority on this thread.

I wouldn't describe any 20 year old as a fully grown adult, and especially not boys who are very well known to mature more slowly. And they may technically be adults but they haven't had a lot of life experience to equip them for something as challenging as RATW. They did brilliantly, handling all the highs and lows and the budget, let alone the practicalities. No one is talking about them as though they are children.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/05/2024 19:46

With Eugenie and Isobel there was a moment very close to the end where Eugenie was leaning in for a hug from Isobel and it took her ages to grudgingly put her arm round her Mum's shoulder. This is what I meant by their body language speaking volumes.

EverybodyLTB · 30/05/2024 19:58

Isobel said something, I can’t remember the words but the gist was ‘after what I experienced growing up’ or something that implied there’d been a chasm since childhood that they’d gone on the show to bridge. I wondered if she’d been sent to board and siblings hadn’t? There’s definitely a deep emotional disconnect there, no amount of ‘yeah it was great to connect’ was covering it up.
