Second thread about the BBC Series.

Do other people wonder how foreign contestants would get on if they were doing the series in the Uk?Would they find people willing to put them up, feed them, drive them to places without charge, and generally put themselves out to help total strangers? Sadly I think they would find suspicion and unhelpful attitudes far more common than seems to be the case in so many of the places they visited, especially this series, so many of the people they met had relatively little materially by Western standards, but were overwhelmingly generous .

In the Danish version of the programme they did go through Scotland in an earlier series.

I think in most of the UK people would be helpful. It probably helps that you're part of a TV programme, it makes people want to be part of it too. But living in the UK, I have often had help from complete strangers in various situations and have offered help myself to others.
But of course, trying to travel by train in the UK would be pointless because they are always on strike!

The tide had gone out, it was the same place.

That explains it, feel like a fool for not realising it!

Listen to Richard Osman's podcast. He explains how it works in one of the podcasts. Sorry, I can't remember which one but they are all very interesting.

The podcast is called The Rest is Entertainment.

Lots of issues explained.

Stressybetty · 29/05/2024 23:58

So pleased the boys won, I was in tears!

Stressybetty · 30/05/2024 00:01

Low point of the series has been DH talking all the way through as he travelled there on his gap year 34 years ago!

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/05/2024 01:03

Excellent result for the boys, loved them both and I'm so chuffed they won. Both only 20 years old at the start - they have been so impressive ❤. Cheeky editors had us worried there right at the end when we thought they would choose the wrong direction from the badminton court.

I thought Isobel's body language towards her mother shows that all is not well there.

Steven and Viv and amateur Ed Sheeran was too much for me I'm afraid!

I'm glad that Betty and James made it too in the end. 444

periodiclabel · 30/05/2024 04:10

I didn’t mind who won - I’d warmed to them all by the end but I think it was pretty clear the boys had it in the bag

Ive been to Bali and the Gili islands and didn’t like either - they look like paradise on film but the former is hideously over touristed and the latter is full of backpackers off their tits on shrooms. The island we saw has a huge rubbish dump in the middle where Bali offloads all its unbiodegradable crap - it’s surrounded by dead coral and really brought home to me how we’ve destroyed the planet

On that cheery note - it was another great series!

Willmafrockfit · 30/05/2024 06:13

i felt for Isobel at the end of the reunion, trying to please her dominant mother. there are probably very alike
so pleased that betty and james didnt trail in last but surprised that Viv and Stephen did.

WrenNatsworthy · 30/05/2024 06:23

I stayed in Seminyak in Bali in 2008, it was beautiful. Sorry to hear how awful it has become @periodiclabel

It was the right outcome for me. I wanted the boys to win, especially the ever-patient Owen.
I never did warm to Eugenie, they kept saying about how the trip had brought them closer but it rang falsely,
Betty and James were the firm favourites in our house, just loved them both. Proper heart - warming how it brought them closer.
Steve and Viv didn't need to win, they did extremely well, I became quite fond of them.
I'll really miss the excitement of a new episode every Wednesday!

RidiculousPrice · 30/05/2024 06:42

I was really expecting there to be a big reveal about Eugenie and Isabel - a reason for their odd behaviours and relationship. I found myself actively disliking Eugenie during the reunion show. You could see it with the other contestants too in their reactions to them. So basically not that likeable. I wonder why they chose them? Perhaps there were hoping for a similar estranged relationship journey like the wonderful uncle nephew that won S2.

Wonderful to hear about Alfie’s travels since the show . He’s so insightful at times, and the comments he made to Bridie and her mum were lovely.

Worthy winners! When is the sleb version on?…..😎

Willmafrockfit · 30/05/2024 07:15

i only have to Read about James asking for a hug and I cry again

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/05/2024 07:27

I once let a young American couple sleep in my house. It was pouring with rain and they thought that being near a National park meant they could wild camp. I met them because someone else I knew had given them a lift and persuaded them come to an event to swell the numbers.

AshleyMadison · 30/05/2024 08:06

I absolutely loved this series. It took me back to so many places that I back packed through in my youth. I loved seeing how so many places, especially Cambodia have grown and developed since then.

My heart fell a little at the start of the episode - so much ground to cover to show any detail in just an hour. I would have liked to have seen a bit more detail about Yogyakarta and its amazing temple of Borobudur. And definitely gutted that they taxied through the whole of Bali.

It was wonderful to see the stunning Gili islands again. I remember staying in a beach hut for about £1 a night a good decade or two ago, so it was good to see the islands are beginning to recover from the horrendous earthquake they suffered 6 or 7 years ago.

I did cheer when boys won, but Betty and James managing to complete the leg with such a small amount of money was also an amazing triumph

Halsall · 30/05/2024 08:08

I’m really glad Alfie and Owen won, and that Betty and James finished (and came third). Funny, I started out thinking the boys were annoying lads and really liking Eugenie and Isobel, but the constant sniping and odd dynamic between them switched my sympathies completely.

ThePoetsWife · 30/05/2024 08:09

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 29/05/2024 22:46

I’m glad the boys beat the women who lied about their finances and nicked the taxi in the previous episode. Cheats never prosper.

Me too and also it was weird how the mum would pray for a win - not very Christian.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 30/05/2024 08:12

I thought Isobel's body language towards her mother shows that all is not well there.

It really was. However, if you look at all of Isobel's pieces to camera, she is awkward. She holds herself stiffly and comes across as uncomfortable. For the first time last night, I wondered if she might be ND (I'm Autistic, and while I have a great relationship with my Mum, I'm not very huggy)

Could be totally barking up the wrong tree, but I just felt I recognised a general level of awkwardness that I'm familiar with myself.

Samcro · 30/05/2024 08:15

i wish the siblings had won, the "boys" were really irritating. they are grown men, yet everyone talks about them like they are children.
they also lied about their budget.

ThePoetsWife · 30/05/2024 08:15

And to those who thought Isabel and her Mum were getting on better - I am not convinced.

It's Eugenie who keeps saying they've been brought closer together etc while Isabel hardly said anything and her body language was very revealing.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 30/05/2024 08:19

I went to Bali 3 years after the bombing. Tourists had avoided it like the plague for a couple of years, so the people were literally clinging to our ankles and dragging us into their shops and businesses.
I've always felt that it's a place of extremes. Some of the interior areas of the island are stunning and unspoiled. Quite a few of the beaches leave a lot to be desired though. I absolutely loved it for its people and its culture, and the people are under no illusions that Indonesia is an incredibly corrupt country. I didn't go to the Gili Islands, but I did go to Lembongan island which is just like the paradise they show in the brochures. (At least it was then) The coral there was also stunning at the time.

It took me a while too before I realised

Newgirls · 30/05/2024 08:35

I really enjoyed it and loved the insights into the filming crew - that is a tough job that probably sounds amazing and then requires hours in hot crowded buses!

delighted the boys won as they had got the earlier ferry and were 4 hours ahead before the final wait for the island boat.

euguenie and Isabel are very different - mum spiritual and outgoing and daughter reserved, science minded and possibly neurodiverse. I liked that the catch up commentary said that although different their combination did make them a good race team.

excellent tv and will miss it

she was awkward around her, although I am glad the ND wasnt mentioned

determinedtomakethiswork · 30/05/2024 08:38

I could never understand why contestants going into a show like this aren't absolutely fighting fit. There's always at least one episode that ends in a physical race. That's why the boys won this time I think isn't it?

Turquoisesea · 30/05/2024 08:39

I’m really glad the boys won, I’ve got a DS who’s similar age and it was so nice to see their close friendship despite their differences. I really liked Betty & James too and glad they managed to finish as I was worried they would run out of money. I think Stephen & Viv did so well to finish too. The relationship between Eugenia and Isabel still felt a bit prickly, the difference between Bridie and her mum who are so comfortable with each other and them is huge. Definitely still some tension there I think. It was a great series and loved the places they visited.
