Second thread about the BBC Series.

OP posts:

I’ve loved this series so much and I was hoping Betty and James won but I’m glad they managed to finish - with only one 0.05% of their money left!

Glad the series has picked back up after Canada 😴 I almost didn’t watch it!

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams I always assumed those jobs are vetted and a collection of them pre-arranged so that the candidates don't need to search and the job suppliers know roughly who is coming. So I'd guess the same would be done if in the UK.

Edited

Aren’t they given a handbook with the jobs listed, pay and whether accommodation js included?

Riverlee · 31/05/2024 07:48

Regarding Canada, although the race element wasn’t so interesting, I do remember beautiful scenery throughout the series.

Yes. The jobs are certainly pre arranged by the production team. They have a booklet showing jobs they can do and sometimes they will go off route to take a job that is interesting.

What is the negative body language from Isobel towards her mother people are referring to.

I also think there was a deep emotional disconnect between them but I never pick up on body language so would be interested to know more.

HairyToity · 31/05/2024 08:41

I also thought Isabel and Eugenie were very good, and admired them. My daughter and I often have tension and I'm walking on eggshells. It's just different personalities.

A foot race was always going to be won by two 20 year olds. I thought Alfie was very very competitive.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2024 08:42

He was definitely very very competitive!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/05/2024 08:47

Yes, as the boys were jogging along the end I thought they looked like they could keep going at that speed for ages and how much faster they'd be covering ground than people walking.

Yes sorry, I realise the jobs are pre-arranged but I was trying to guess what they'd choose as British jobs. Then I thought that rules around tax and pay might make it harder here. I'll have to watch the earlier series to see how it worked.

MistyMountainTop · 31/05/2024 09:32

I did wonder if there would be a twist with them using the sun to navigate, with it being in the southern hemisphere, and the sun being in the north rather than the south, and one team would forget this! But thinking again, if it was October/November, the sun would be overhead/south as it was past the September equinox - and it was early morning so it would be in the east

I found the ending a bit meh. I really loved Betty & James and was pleased they finished but is it very believable they had just the right amount of money to finish? Especially when we never actually saw the end of their journey.

Also, surely with the top two teams only eight minutes apart they must have E & I wait for the boys to finish filming on the beach first therefore knew they hadn't won?

Yep, I agree about the ending. The Gili Islands are really quite - no motor vehicles. Gili Meno is the quietest of the three islands - it's really hard to imagine E&I not being able to hear the boy's excitement from the other side of the island, long before they could see them

There was a team in Series 1 who had no money left at all but needed some to get to the final point on a viewing deck. They were helped by another team in the end.

I wondered this too but remember in series 2 it was very close at the end and they showed the second couple realising they hadn’t won when they saw the first couple at the book. That would make better tv surely than telling the second couple they haven’t won, making them wait for filming of the winners and then open the book and pretend it’s a surprise. To be honest though they didn’t look very surprised when they opened the book so maybe they did do that.

burnoutbabe · 31/05/2024 12:22

but the ladies knew that the 2 boys had got off the boat 5 mins earlier. And then it was a case of running to one place, then running to another. So they'd assume the boys would get their first - both the 5 min head start PLUS the fact they can run and the ladies can not.

So they'd assume they had lost anyway, beyond the boys getting totally lost (and i assume compass was in their dumped bags as they had one before)

Riverlee · 31/05/2024 13:41

I presumed the boys finished, did their initial hugs and cheers etc then were removed from the scene (and out of sight) to allow E and I to finish. Then they returned to do the landscape shots, shots in the sea etc.

Although, in theory, E and I could have seen them at a distance at the finish post.

They mentioned in the reunion show that Betty had wanted to get crisps in the town before the boat but didn't. If they had bought them they wouldn't have had enough money for the boat fare.

One thing I could see if the crew potentially mentioning (along with James) that it might be a good idea to check the boat fare first...

Lemevoir · 31/05/2024 17:07

Isabel's face when Alfie admitted to wanting to hide her and Euganie's bags at Lombok!

Yes, actually if I somehow encountered someone taking part in Hunted I would definitely help.

Mainly because that show has really irritated me by how much it is skewed (perhaps artificially) towards the hunters.

Yes. I haven’t seen much of Hunted but it really seems to me like the hunters are tipped off (maybe by the camera teams?)

Toooldforthis36 · 31/05/2024 19:18

Been avoiding this thread until I’ve (now) finished the last episode. So chuffed for the boys, I did love them 😍

diian · 31/05/2024 21:14

I am quite sad as I watched the final episode again today as I could not work out how Betty and James got to the end with so little money. I wrote down all the parts of the final leg. Also Betty and James were 30 hours behind in Jakarta, but only 25 hours behind at the end even though they stopped to work and had a 8 hour wait for a train to Malang after the 2pm one was full.

Jakarta: Betty and James have £155 remaining:

£16.70 train to salt farm's nearest town
£10 accommodation

  • £20 pay £5.39 taxi to train station £38.85 train to Malang (this is what A and O paid) £27.00 bus to Ferry port from Malang (This is what I and E paid) £1.84 ferry to Bali (this is what A and O paid) £43.20 taxi across Bali (This is what A and O paid and was fast! 5.5 hours) £74.07 5 hour Ferry to Lombok and 50 km taxi to boat town (This is what I and E paid) £8 Boat to Gili Meno Island (price on the departure board for slow boat)

Total = minus £50.05

I wonder, if once a team won, the other two teams just jumped in the following producer's car and made their way to the end, paying the ferry prices, but not the taxis. Otherwise, how did Betty and James make up 5 hours in time? And get to the end without running out of money?

scissy · 31/05/2024 21:35

Maybe, although alot of the "catching up" time was due to the other teams arriving overnight and having to wait for hours I'd have thought?

Also, we don't see on TV every job that the teams do each leg. This has been mentioned by various teams in the past, so it could be they earned extra money that way. Also as you say, we don't know how they got across Bali/Lombok. Anyone could have given them a lift and that would save them a taxi fare.

They didn’t talk about the boys doing the painting. That could have been a job but it wasn’t mentioned. They only have an hour each episode, they can’t cover everything they do.

I wasn't very keen on Isabel and Eugenie, with nicking taxi of other contestants and lying about their budget. I am surprised mother is a teacher. They were too ambitious and not very personable. I also didn't see real connection between them like there was between other contestants. I enjoyed stories of other contestants and them opening up about their hardships, struggles. I am so glad Alfie and Owen won. They are so young and yet so mature. Being an Indian maybe I am partly biased but I loved the bond between also brother sister duo. Also, the couple, their dancing in the Asian streets was beautiful. This was a fantastic series. Also feel proud how warm we Asians are, though I am from the other side but I can claim the fame 😃

You are right there is a disconnect between them. Daughter being uncomfortable when they were eating with a local and another time in water but mother was pushy.

Isabel also had digs at mother, which would really upset her. There were no tender moments like one opening up emotionally or crying and other reaching out with touch or a hug. It becomes so evident when you compare them to a pair of siblings only in their 20s able to connect emotionally.

Whatmyname · 01/06/2024 00:49

Samcro · 30/05/2024 08:15

i wish the siblings had won, the "boys" were really irritating. they are grown men, yet everyone talks about them like they are children.
they also lied about their budget.

Boys didn't lie. Mother daughter did, also nicked couple's taxi.
