Second thread about the BBC Series.

V much in the minority here but I was rooting for E & I all the way. I thought Isobel was a genius with logistics & they were excellent engaging with locals and getting info. I also liked there competitiveness and focus, they are there to win after all. They also weren’t afraid of hard work. The fact they were only 12 min behind 2 20YO boys at the end with more £ left was something.
I did find the boys a bit irritating

LaBelleSauvage123 · 30/05/2024 20:06

I did think E was very good at interacting with the locals. But there was a kind of emotional emptiness between her and Isobel that I found really disconcerting.

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 20:07

'no interest in them' 😂

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/05/2024 20:11

thanks

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 20:18

Can't believe Betty and James got to that job then realised they had to pay for the accommodation 😓

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 20:21

This morning. Couldn't be yesterday as the shoe hadn't aired yet so we didn't yet know who'd won.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/05/2024 20:28

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

thank you!

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 20:59

£1.48 remaining!!

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 21:05

Viv and Steve were still quite far behind.
I though they might catch up a bit cos they had the most money

Do other people wonder how foreign contestants would get on if they were doing the series in the Uk?Would they find people willing to put them up, feed them, drive them to places without charge, and generally put themselves out to help total strangers? Sadly I think they would find suspicion and unhelpful attitudes far more common than seems to be the case in so many of the places they visited, especially this series, so many of the people they met had relatively little materially by Western standards, but were overwhelmingly generous .

Strangers are willing to help those on ‘Hunted’ so I think we’d be okay. Also, having a film crew behind you makes it more legit, and everyone loves their fifteen minutes of fame.

Isobel said something, I can’t remember the words but the gist was ‘after what I experienced growing up’ or something that implied there’d been a chasm since childhood that they’d gone on the show to bridge. I wondered if she’d been sent to board and siblings hadn’t? There’s definitely a deep emotional disconnect there, no amount of ‘yeah it was great to connect’ was covering it up.

I noticed this as well. I also wondered whether she’d been sent to boarding school, or was it due to her parents divorce?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/05/2024 21:19

I also thought "boarding school?" last night

Jellykat · 30/05/2024 22:08

Definitely an emotional disconnect between Eugenie and Isabel.. remember when Isabel said something along the lines of it would be nice to have family meals together, and Eugenie dismissed it saying it wasnt possible..

I suspect Eugenie was emotionally unavailable for Isabel as a child and thats understandably caused deep rooted problems.

You might remember about 30 years ago there was a show like Hunted where they spent the week going across the country and had to do a task each day. Then there was a live show on one night a week where they were in a phone box and the hunters had to find them. One of the couples turned up where I worked and we helped them out, fed them, and hid them for the day.

'how do you feel today about the changes in the weather' 😂

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/05/2024 22:40

Just watched Reunion show. Loved seeing how it was filmed and a few extra bits.

I have to say having done a few 24 hour + coach trips - well let’s just say it may have been 35 years ago but I still remember it like yesterday. Another I remember for 6/7 hours standing as they had oversold that journey. Not a pleasant experience.

Hats off to the contestants for doing all that in front of cameras!

fussychica · 30/05/2024 23:18

Loved the boys won though B&J were our favourites. I have a suspicion that the end was manipulated by the crew when they realised the boys were four hours ahead of I&E so moved the end from the mainland to the islands where they needed a boat or ferry that couldn't be accessed for around 4 hours meaning I&E caught up. This allowed them to do the usual final "will they won't they" run to the final book moment.
Call me a cynic but I call set up for the dramatic finish. Good series though.

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 23:19

5foot5 · 30/05/2024 10:20

Yes this.

I was surprised that in the reunion show Eugenie was still banging on about James lying about where the bus was going and saying how this had messed with her mind for a bit. But how is that any different to her lying about their finances to the boys, who were definitely taken in by it.

I think the taxi stealing has been explained upthread as not being as clear cut as it was shown to be.

Yes no different to her making the boys believe they didn't have a lot of money

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/05/2024 23:31

Presumably you couldn't work cash in hand in the UK? There might be a way around it I suppose — bed and board would be fine, and then given money by the production company perhaps.

What would they give them to do here do you think? Dry stone walling, pulling pints in a pub, working in a fish and chip shop. Maybe some farming and fishing work, mucking out stables?

Nah, I reckon that was always going to be the finish line to provide a slight bottleneck and sense of "drama". In the final leg for each series I can remember there has always been some form of "bottle neck".
Come to think of it they've been boat crossings Series 2-4. (I can't remember Series 1) This one wasn't actually as bad as the Series 2 "one ferry a day" bottleneck for the last leg!

purpleme12 · 30/05/2024 23:34

Wow Alfie's been gadding about!

HoHoHoliday · 30/05/2024 23:59

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams I always assumed those jobs are vetted and a collection of them pre-arranged so that the candidates don't need to search and the job suppliers know roughly who is coming. So I'd guess the same would be done if in the UK.

5foot5 · 31/05/2024 00:24

Aslockton · 29/05/2024 23:16

I think the series 'Hunted' often shows the kindness of strangers in the UK.

Yes, actually if I somehow encountered someone taking part in Hunted I would definitely help.

Mainly because that show has really irritated me by how much it is skewed (perhaps artificially) towards the hunters.

I don't think the jobs have ever been 'real jobs' in competition with locals. I think they have always been set up experiences and probably paid by the production company. In Canada and Europe (series 1) I'm sure they also have rules about working cash in hand.
