Fingers crossed they can go out with a bang but not sure!

And with Nessa’s stories about her past employment, they were that bizarre that they were meant to be truthful!
Remember the John Prescott story, and he actually appeared? It all adds to Nessa’s character being very out there !

Late to the thread but I bloody loved it - I have watched G and S since the beginning though. What was interesting is that DH has never watched it (been together nearly 20 years and I would watch it alone). He sat and watched it with me Xmas night and during Mick’s speech I looked across and he was crying.

My highlights:

  • Smithy throwing himself down the stairs
  • The family party
  • The Byker Grove joke. Seriously, when DS (10) went paintballing in Oct, I kept saying “keep your mask on”.
  • Pam’s plans after Mick’s death
  • Neil the baby’s voice!
  • Where they all stood up (I also love Keane)

I’m sure the tears were real from the cast and the last scene was a joy. The photo at the end finished me off.

I’m also glad there was no resolution to the fishing trip joke - it would have never as been as funny as what we individually imagine.

Watching episode 1 with an 18 year old 20 mins in we’ve laughed out loud 6 times 😀

I thought NtB WAs a highlight. Ness and Smithy were so proud of him and filled with love when he was around, and as Nessa said "he was lush"

I loved that element of the show. They'd clearly done an amazing job and respected each other as parents

I thought the fact that two such unlikely people made such good parents was lovely.

We the audience, were never supposed to know the truth about the fishing trip, it was always meant to be a mystery! Twice now me were almost told the story, then it was interrupted part way through to keep the continuity of the mystery!
And the Owain Hughes joke doesn’t really exist , it’s a joke that we’re not supposed to understand and leave us guessing the meaning.

It’s not that hard is it ?!!

Oh my G, I (can't speak for others) absolutely understand the device used but at the end of the day I think it was an afterthought, I think if it used in Comedy it should be funny, it isn't, it's suggestiveness is dated IMO and would be more fitting in Some Mother's Do Ave Em or something from that era but it ties into the self parody issue of the character of Bryn. IMO (and this is the important bit, mine not yours) it doesn't work. It has zero to do with understanding this writing device!

Starting from the beginning oooh soooo good. The train propoposal the mad asides "if it weren't for my relationship with John Prescott Id still be in that thai jail now" Uncle Bryns riff on Staceys numerous fiancees...

I know the 2019 ep has been slated but I think the mutual respect is evident there e.g. Neil refuses the carolling money, says the presents are from both of them and then refuses to leave Neil the baby on Xmas day night.

She’s a rough scammer that’s how she’s always been! That’s why the show is so good the characters are flawed they are not black and white / good or bad. Pam snd Nessa are actually quite monstrous if you think about it and Smithy but we end up fond of them. Similar to Rachel Green in friends. Testament to excellent writers and top notch actors.

Edited

Yes I know how she is and I agree the writing is very good 😊

My ponderings weren’t about the actual characters but about how many PP here were saying what a great parent she was. If someone was confessing here that they run a scamming rikshaw business, people would be outraged and demanding SC should be involved!

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2024 15:46

Nessa is Nessa! She is a scammer , but manages to get away with it somehow.
A kind of Welsh ' Del boy ' if you like !
She is scary.

I love the ep when they shift Stacey's gear to Billericay.

The piles that are going to stay, store and the charity; which is just a foot spa and Nessa's comment to Pete Townsend "I've said it to his face, where is the book?" get me every time.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 27/12/2024 15:56

All that roughness is so beautifully contrasted with her gentleness sometimes when she’s talking to Smithy - and her entirely trapped female discomfort when two men are arguing over who has control of her baby …

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2024 16:07

Micks speech was perfect ! How lovely to have Mick as a second dad.
I was willing him to stand up with the others and he didn't let me down after I thought he may stay seated !
Mick is my favorite character apart from Nessa but she is just a legend

dapsnotplimsolls · 27/12/2024 16:09

I've just seen a compilation of clips on Graham Norton - in one, Ruth jokingly mentions a musical and ALW is sitting right there. I'm thinking Gavin and Stacey meets Mamma Mia - Greek Island, Uncle Bryn gets romanced by a Greek waiter with nefarious intentions, everyone else has to save him ...

MyOtherProfile · 27/12/2024 16:40

Just watching again. Why is there a woman at the wedding dressed exactly the same as Pam? Fuschia pink hat and dress and white overcoat. She's sitting in the same side but further back.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 27/12/2024 17:00

Also where were Rudy and Cat at the wedding? They were there beforehand but not at the actually ceremony (as surely they would have stood up also, especially Rudy).

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 27/12/2024 17:01

Surely they should have been sitting in front row with Neil the Baby?

My mistake! Smithy’s mam was there, she must have just been asleep for that bit!

I suspect that Sheridan Smith only had a really short window of availability so she just filmed the arrival bit and then left!

It’s either a deliberate device or an afterthought. It can’t be both.

Don't you think that during 17 years of creative writing collaboration one of them might have said 'why don't we ... ' or 'here's an idea...' ? They wouldn't have had it all planned at the beginning.

No, not the fishing trip thing. It was very obviously a MacGuffin from the outset.

Tiredbean · 27/12/2024 18:31

Absolutely loved it. ❤️❤️ Perfection.

My favourite part was Neil the baby playing the guitar and singing at the wedding. The love for him shown in Smithy’s eyes was beautiful. It was at this moment when I also think Smithy began to have doubts. You could see him questioning himself in his head and his facial expression seemed to change during the song.

There was just one line I didn’t get, and was watching with my teenagers, so it felt a bit awkward to rewind.

On Sonia’s hen do, when they ask her what Smithy’s favourite position, what does Nessa mumble?

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2024 18:33

Sonia answered that Smithy ' liked it on top '
Nessa mumbled ' that's not right ' or something

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 27/12/2024 18:34

Oh yes - I meant to go back and listen properly to whatever she said - but I forgot!

Does anyone know?

I suspect that Sheridan Smith only had a really short window of availability so she just filmed the arrival bit and then left!

This, but for anyone seeking a realistic explanation, I would imagine one or more of the kids kicked off big time and Rudi had to take them out.
