Well not really, an Artist wants the viewer to view their work from their perspective, it's about the Artist. A comedy show is written to entertain, using certain devices to make people laugh; all shows are written for the audience and inevitably they will be reviewed and potentially criticised as a result, this is literally the whole point of this thread. It is not personal, it is not what 'I' would have done, I'm criticising the device they used as IMO it wasn't funny.

To be fair, saying it isn’t funny isn’t the same as saying you don’t believe they intended to do it that way. It’s two different points. The first one is totally fair enough but the second sounds silly.

It's the same point from my perspective, i.e they used the device as an afterthought, passing it off as humourous device but IMO it isn't funny and it doesn't work. Obviously, the point of a comedy is to be funny, the audience may have found it funnier if a funny anecdote was included as unlike a Monet, what the audience finds funny is very, very, important!

Wonkypictureframe · 27/12/2024 12:11

It’s not the same to those of us reading your posts though. Same point maybe applies - if your audience isn’t getting it, is it working?

Fair enough, that is your opinion. I don't think many people share it though. There's no actual story that could possibly be as funny as the expectation. And leaving it as a mystery is a far better writing device than any other.

A pp poster mentioned Harri being possibly named Harold Shipman.
Many of them are named after serial killers.
Stacey West
Gavin Shipman
Pete(r) Sutcliffe

And Gavin and Stacey's kids were clearly given names with the Royal Family in mind: Cait(lin) Megan and Harri.

I like these little touches, you can just see how much fun they had writing it. And I think the fishing trip and the Owain Jones 'joke' add to how brilliant the whole thing is

But you aren't my audience, I'm a member of the public posting on a thread about a TV show that we have all watched, if you and a couple of others don't understand or you are upset as we don't agree with you, that's on you. Incidentally, I am unsure why everyone has to agree, unless you were involved in the writing or production of the show, why do you care. I think it was mostly entertaining and funny but that character in particular has become a bit of a self - parody so I didn't enjoy his parts as much, is that ok?

I am watching the first series of Absolutely Fabulous and the writing in that, towers above this tbh but again in sue others will disagree!

Goldenbear · 27/12/2024 12:28

I'm sure not "in sue"(??)

We’re your audience in that we’re all participating in a conversation and trying to understand each other’s points surely?

Of course opinions can and should vary. I’m not remotely ‘upset’ about anything written in a discussion about a sitcom. Fine that you don’t find the fishing trip stuff funny - personally I thought it was hugely overplayed in this episode and could have been dropped a while back so we’re probably not in a very different place on this.

I’m just saying that your point is confused. Initially you said you didn’t believe that they intended to play it out like this and they lacked the writing skills to give an answer that would work so claimed it was intentional instead. Several people said in response that it’s a fairly common comedic approach and likely that they never intended to give the details. Then you said that you didn’t agree with it as you didn’t find it funny and I merely pointed out these were two different things.

I don't think posters on a thread qualify as an audience so if you do then we very much do no think along the same lines when it comes to a discussion on a TV show.

Yes, some did patronise others in explaining the device but I don't think it was purposeful from the outset, they applied it as an afterthought. You very much can write an anecdote that would be funnier than that IMO, they do that all of the time in AB FAB and it is the outrageousness that is funny but they didn't. I think that was because they couldn't be bothered or perhaps doubted their ability to do so, easier to pass it off as a deliberate device.

Apologies for lack of slavish adoration!

Wonkypictureframe · 27/12/2024 12:46

I’ll leave you to it.

Twonewcats · 27/12/2024 12:59

I think with the fishing trip and the Owain Hughes jokes, the writers and the actors have said there is no definite story and no joke re Owain Hughes - no, I don't.
Isn't that clear enough? 🥴

Does anyone remember that Neil the baby got through to the sing off rounds of the Voice a few years ago. When they turned he said he was in the show. I hope he gets a few record deals he was fab singing blackbird

It’s like in League of Gentlemen and never saying what the mystery meat is. It’s always better left to your imagination.

Yes, he had a lovely voice.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 27/12/2024 13:21

@Passenger42 one of the countless previews / reviews I’ve read specifically confirmed that that’s why the writers brought him back for the finale - because he’s set on a music career.

I’d be amazed if he doesn’t benefit hugely from the exposure (and support).

TheHallmarkedMan · 27/12/2024 13:49

I thought NtB WAs a highlight. Ness and Smithy were so proud of him and filled with love when he was around, and as Nessa said "he was lush"

I loved that element of the show. They'd clearly done an amazing job and respected each other as parents

Igavebirthtoabanana · 27/12/2024 13:58

I really enjoyed it! The drive through corn on the cob scene was done brilliantly, oozing sexual tension. Our 16 yo DS was watching with us and dying of cringe at the point 😂.

NtB was lush!

One thing that bothers me sligthly… people are saying what a decent parent Nessa has been. But at the start of the episode she was scamming the elderly couple and then got threatening when they tried to complain. And didn’t she take NtB to carol singing but effectively extorting money in the previous xmas special?

TheaBrandt · 27/12/2024 14:05

She’s a rough scammer that’s how she’s always been! That’s why the show is so good the characters are flawed they are not black and white / good or bad. Pam snd Nessa are actually quite monstrous if you think about it and Smithy but we end up fond of them. Similar to Rachel Green in friends. Testament to excellent writers and top notch actors.

Oh! Stop overthinking!

SocksAndTheCity · 27/12/2024 14:07

Anybody who's ever been to Leicester Square will tell you that £75 for a 100 yard tuk tuk ride is barely even scamming anyway 😁

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 27/12/2024 14:07

There’s definitely a question mark over some things …

Like why someone trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange would need to go carol singing to extort money from neighbours at Christmas.

But oftentimes when I think of Nessa’s history, as opposed to where she’d ended up by the time we met her - I see my own life. Or the lives of people I know. One moment you’re being kept in luxury in a Westminster pad - the next you’re shacked up with Dave Coaches in a caravan …

TheHallmarkedMan · 27/12/2024 14:16

She's not really trading heavily thoug is she. It was 17p or some such

DiamondGoldandSilver · 27/12/2024 14:18

I loved it! We were all cheering on Smithy and Nessa at the end in our house. ❤️

TheaBrandt · 27/12/2024 14:19

Watching episode 1 with an 18 year old 20 mins in we’ve laughed out loud 6 times 😀

Paul2023 · 27/12/2024 14:43

We the audience, were never supposed to know the truth about the fishing trip, it was always meant to be a mystery! Twice now me were almost told the story, then it was interrupted part way through to keep the continuity of the mystery!
And the Owain Hughes joke doesn’t really exist , it’s a joke that we’re not supposed to understand and leave us guessing the meaning.

It’s not that hard is it ?!!
