Fingers crossed they can go out with a bang but not sure!

I was just explaining that I get it, we get it and I heard the actor who plays Stacey's brother explain that on radio 4 but I think it is more about lazy writing than purposeful device as in a comedy it would have to be funny and it's isn't!

Lazy writing? They made a choice different from yours. I'm another who agrees with their choice. I would have hated to find out what happened.

But that would NOT BE FUNNY. The fishing trip is forever undefined. It’s not a loose end. It’s a deliberate mystery. No explanation would ever work. And it would kill any rewatch.

I can't believe the number of people who insist it was a shame we don't know about what happened on the fishing trip. That was deliberate, not an oversight! And the "what's the joke with Owain Hughes?" There isn't one.

As for the accusations that Nessa is lying about everything she has done in her life....good grief! That's the whole humour of the character. Some are trying to say that she's a fantasist. Er no. You just don't get it.

There is a joke, it’s a Welsh language joke based on the pronunciation of I am in Welsh, ‘ydw i’ is pronounced as ‘do-ee’, which sounds like ‘do he’ which is similar to the English question, ‘does he?’ To which he always responds - No, I don’t.

A clever joke, perhaps too clever for the show?

there isn’t a joke, that’s the joke. It’s got nothing to do with Ydw i which isn’t linked to does he at all.

That's fine but your implication is that those of us posting the opposite are a bit dim but it's not that it's just a difference of opinion, it's fine, it's only a comedy not something to stress over.

For the love of G, we do know but are disputing it's use as it isn't funny!

I should add, in some of our opinions.

I've not said anything of the sort. If that's what you get out of what I wrote that's on you. You made the most negative comment talking about lazy writing!

WestwardHo1 · 27/12/2024 10:29

No it's not especially funny I agree

I was talking about posters who appeared to think there'd be a big reveal, as if it's a major part of the plotline.

Apologies, my post was in response to another poster up thread.

Did they leave Neil the baby at the wedding?

I think it’s because she’s meant to be younger than that on the show, James Corden is around 46/47 I think , there’s an age gap in real life but they’re meant to be the same age on the show.
She plays a much younger part, you wouldn’t think she approaching 60 in real life. I think that’s all people meant when it comes to Ruth Jones age

I’ve never seen Fat Friends or Stella starring Ruth Jones, were they any good ?

Edited

Nessa is not the same age as G & S and Smithy - I'm sure it's been said that she's older (or at least insinuated).

Twonewcats · 27/12/2024 10:57

A pp poster mentioned Harri being possibly named Harold Shipman.
Many of them are named after serial killers.
Stacey West
Gavin Shipman
Pete(r) Sutcliffe

Twonewcats · 27/12/2024 10:58

I seem to be one of the few who found it dull, and only laughed once 🫣
ETA Ness was much more normal than she "should" be.
Too many wistful looks and emotional bits , rather than everything being deadpan.

I do feel sorry for anyone who wanted to watch the finale but was waiting to see it at another time - the resolution is all over the news. Just heard their wedding vows on Radio 4’s The World at One.

It might have been kinder to give people a little time!

How long do you think???
Don't be ridiculous... I only watched it last night so avoided comments/news stories etc... until after I'd seen it.
I even avoided this thread, and am enjoying reading everyone's thoughts and theories this morning.

Diddlyumptious · 27/12/2024 11:12

Never watched a single episode but it's a tv show, everyone will have an opinion and no one is wrong.

It’s the opposite of lazy writing. To leave it as an unknown like that takes guts.

Very much agree. You can't criticise a drama on the basis that it's not what you would have done. It's like criticising Van Gogh because his lines were too wiggly (Outnumbered reference).

Some people will watch anything.

Some people will be a dickhead over anything 👍👍

Yes, I know that's what they have said but I think it is an afterthought as perhaps there isn't the writing ability rather than a purposeful device.

Interesting how Smithy is so in demand as a love interest who would have thought it.

More like lazy watching ability, if you need everything to be spelled out for you…

I'm a little envious, if I'm honest. Imagine having the free time and the headspace available to spend this much of both on a thread about a TV programme you didn't like, just to troll try and spoil the enjoyment of people who did and are now enjoying a chat about it.

Well not really, an Artist wants the viewer to view their work from their perspective, it's about the Artist. A comedy show is written to entertain, using certain devices to make people laugh; all shows are written for the audience and inevitably they will be reviewed and potentially criticised as a result, this is literally the whole point of this thread. It is not personal, it is not what 'I' would have done, I'm criticising the device they used as IMO it wasn't funny.

Jeez, did you write the script.

I think it was quite entertaining, I didn't find that bit funny and it felt like an afterthought.. don't take it to heart.

It was once of Pam's malapropisms (I always thought of it as 'aisle' too).

Like 'Ours is not to reason while' 😁

Reminds me of Joey's moo-point .... a cow's opinion 🐄 🤣
