I love the time she gives him full on tongue when she says goodbye. Pam’s face!

i was just remembering that, love it!

About the Corden discussion.....

It makes no sense to me to dislike the show on the grounds that Corden is apparently unpleasant IRL.

I like Dickens. By all accounts he was a right dickhead who treated his wife appallingly but that doesn't mean I shouldn't read and enjoy a Christmas carol every Christmas. Same with loads of other artists.

khaitai · 27/12/2024 07:01

I met James Corden in 2012 and he was a complete twat to me (and his wife) which was gutting as I was a big fan of G&S. However, I have heard that he's had a reckoning with his past behaviour so I like to think he's sorted himself out now.

Mistressofnone · 27/12/2024 07:06

What happened @khaitai ? Even Brydon remarked that it all went to his head for a while

khaitai · 27/12/2024 07:16

@Mistressofnone I don't want to give all the details as I've told this story to all my friends so it'll be immediately outing. Essentially he was really rude to me implying I looked like someone he'd shagged and it was in front of a whole group of people including his wife. I think he was quite drunk. I was mortified.

Thinking about it it was actually exactly the kind of thing a drunk Smithy would say! Anyways don't want to derail the G&S thread as this is much more important.

I don't think it would have hurt necessarily to tie up that loose end finally with something really trivial - e.g. Bryn promised faithfully to bring sandwiches and completely forgot, so they ended up having to go to the chip shop instead; and he's been ridiculously and disproportionately mortally embarrassed about his one-off lapse of order and control for all of this time!

But that would NOT BE FUNNY. The fishing trip is forever undefined. It’s not a loose end. It’s a deliberate mystery. No explanation would ever work. And it would kill any rewatch.

This. Apparently they did film an explanation in a previous series but cut it because it wouldn't have been funny. It's better to leave it a mystery like the Owain Hughes non-joke.

ChessieFL · 27/12/2024 08:15

I’ve just looked and apparently the actors playing Gavin and Stacey’s kids are also the same actors from the 2019 special which is another nice touch.

TheaBrandt · 27/12/2024 08:20

Dickens was not a dickhead. He genuinely helped the poor particularly girls and actively saved many from prostitution. He set up a home with a wealthy unmarried lady to give girls at risk of being underage prostitutes a trade. He got on better with his daughters than his sons.

He married badly when he was too young and found his wife annoying and quite thick so they didn’t have a good marriage but they were stuck with each other.

I heard that they filmed some flashback footage from the boat trip (not what happened; just the two of them on the boat from what I understood) but it was cut because of time. I really recommend listening to the Off the Telly podcast G&S special as they had Rob Wilfort as a guest and he talks about it all. Including why it will never be explained.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 27/12/2024 08:30

I think they made completely the right choice not to say what happened on the fishing trip. It would have spoiled it completely. It’s much funnier left unsaid.

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2024 08:45

I still think that Jason saw Bryn in his undies by complete accident and the others think they were having sex! Dave is the kind to put two and two together and make five and the Chinese whispers around them both caused a stir. Nothing happened at all.
Only a theory of mine , although it's probably wrong

HotCrossBunplease · 27/12/2024 08:48

I’m astonished that so many people don’t understand why the fishing trip will never be explained. You need to Google “MacGuffin”. Are you all still wondering what was in the suitcase in Pulp Fiction too?

The writers don’t even know what happened!

See also Owain Hughes. There is no joke.

See also Owain Hughes. There is no joke.

There is a joke, it’s a Welsh language joke based on the pronunciation of I am in Welsh, ‘ydw i’ is pronounced as ‘do-ee’, which sounds like ‘do he’ which is similar to the English question, ‘does he?’ To which he always responds - No, I don’t.

A clever joke, perhaps too clever for the show?

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2024 09:16

There was a thread once about a joke around a Boswell and a flight of stairs or something and that was similar in as much as it was a joke ( supposedly) but didn't make any sense. Lots of theories around that one

Well the actor who played Owain Hughes insists that it isn't anything in Welsh and the joke is that it isn't a joke.

There isn’t. The writers have said there isn’t.

It’s like playing Mornington Crescent

Really? But it’s so close. I’d have seriously thought it was.

But why would it be tied to the name Owain Hughes? Which the joke obviously is.

BestIsWest · 27/12/2024 10:07

I don’t think it is a joke, just coincidence, but my mother pronounces ‘I am’ in Welsh as ‘Wy’n’ rather than ‘dw i’n’ - it does sound a little bit like ‘Owain’

Yes, I know that's what they have said but I think it is an afterthought as perhaps there isn't the writing ability rather than a purposeful device.

Interesting how Smithy is so in demand as a love interest who would have thought it.

I give up.

I was just explaining that I get it, we get it and I heard the actor who plays Stacey's brother explain that on radio 4 but I think it is more about lazy writing than purposeful device as in a comedy it would have to be funny and it's isn't!
