Ruth jones was good in ' fat friends '
As was James Cordon
I know people don't like him , but his done well for himself ( probs why people don't like him )
It's the English disease to knock anyone successful

To be fair, there are many, many reports from people who've met, worked with and otherwise encountered him that he is a real arrogant arse IRL.

One of the highest profile 'episodes' was in a NY restaurant, where he was very rude to the server and had to later apologise on his TV show.

That said, he is a brilliant writer and actor; so I think it's a case (for me, at least) of accepting his on-screen brilliance, whilst also acknowledging that he may not be somebody I'd be desperate to meet in person.

The reason a lot of the Little Chefs turned it sex shops is that they can open there without any neighbours objecting. Who still goes to sex shops still though I have no idea.

No neighbours to complain about the shop being there; also nobody around that the customers might know to see them going inside!

I'm also amazed, though, that people can't find what they want from the phenomenally large array of 'adult' goods available subtly online, and still go to a bricks and mortar shop to fulfil their grubby desires!

This is very much how I think, it's Smithy I am watching and being entertained by and whilst I can appreciate James Cordons talent in creating and playing him so well it's irrelevant what the man himself is like off camera. Same with John Cleese, I love his work and characters but find him somewhat loathsome.

I do remember reading James's autobiography years ago, back when G&S was at its peak and he was refreshingly honest about allowing the fame to go to his head and become an arrogant arse. It seemed like he was aware and trying to become more humble but after reading what you say about the restaurant incident maybe not...

TheaBrandt · 26/12/2024 23:00

Well a young family member was quite annoying to him and he was nice and patient so we like him in our house!

Paul2023 · 26/12/2024 23:22

How did James Corden get to be such a star? I mean going to America to do the late late show , carpool karaoke with some of the biggest celebrities, driving around LA with Price Harry?

Genuinely interested how he transformed from a British comedy writer to such a big platform?..

Question...why is Bryn so cross about Gwen and Dave getting together??

Paul2023 · 26/12/2024 23:28

Slightly off topic , but do night clubs still
have foam parties ? This was a thing for sure definitely in the 2000s, but now ?

There were loads of clubs around the towns I used to live in ,in the mid 2000s, but I think the recession killed a lot of night clubs off.

Most of the clubs I went to 20 years ago have all pretty much shut down.

All of this:

Also, he is losing Nessa and Neil the baby as his long-time lodgers, so is probably very upset at the thought of Gwenn not needing him and Dave Coaches moving in, especially as Dave Coaches is the one person 'who knows' what happened between him and Jason - bound to be tense for Brynn.

Wonder how Stacey met nessa

If Stace was 17 and nes 35 so -17/18yrs older then her

Think they met when She was 14?

Stace /smithy /gav are around 24 when we meet them so nessa around 41 when got preg

I had a friend exactly like Ness when I was a teen in Wales in the 80s. There was an age gap between us as she'd gotten engaged to a guy in her late teens and played the doting fiancé long enough to give up on her dreams and take a full time job as a supermarket cashier to support him to become a doctor and save up for their marriage. After which he promptly dumped her for someone else and she had to move home and start her life again.

She continued to work in the supermarket to save enough to put herself through teaching college as her mum was widowed and disabled and her dad was a no mark who disappeared. I joined part time in the evenings after school and used to work the same shifts as her. She was late 20s then and I was just 16. We were in university at the same time, me 19 and her 32. We stayed in touch and visited each other a lot.

Not only did she really resemble Ness in looks, she had incredible life experience and confidence. Everytime we went out, to a bar or club, men flocked around her. She used to command them to get us in drinks. Don't think we ever paid for a drink during that time. 🤣

I wondered this too and then thought it was to show off Bryn s eccentric personality, going on at them as if they were having an affair!

Because he's riddled and already nearly married Nessa !

Out of curiosity, are you still friends? What happened to her ?

Question...why is Bryn so cross about Gwen and Dave getting together??

I think he is very protective of her. She is his family and he sees it as his job to look after her. Dave is not a catch and has been around the block a few times to be polite.

There are loads of bits in series 3 when Bryn getting more and more irate with Dave, who's a know-all arsehole and terrible back seat driver. He is also a prick to Smithy saying "it's more convenient for me" etc, and not respecting Smithy as NTB's father.

The redemption of Dave was well played.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 27/12/2024 00:16

I thought it was just an extension of the jokes in the original series where a) Bryn doesn’t want Dave in their family gang as he knows about the fishing trip and b) the arguing over the driving and the way to essex from Barry. There was an episode where Dave was backseat driving on the way to Essex and Bryn was going mad.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 27/12/2024 00:17

Not close friends, but still in touch through social media. We live in different countries now and it's nearly 35 years later. She did become a teacher, but had several career paths after that.

I do know she married a younger guy, younger than me by a few years too, with stunning model type looks. (like I said, guys just used to flock round her). He seems utterly devoted to her.

And years ago randomly I saw her in a photograph in the Daily Mail online with a celebrity. It would be way too outing to tell the detail of who it was, but it was so her. And so similar to a Nessa type event too. 🤣

Edited

Because he had driven to Billericay over SEVEN times! 😂

Bryn has always been an arsehole under any pressure. He is a man of two halves.

Bryn is really irritating to watch and the fishing trip mystery isn't funny IMO, it felt like they couldn't be bothered to fill in the gaps with a purposeful jokey anecdote.

I don't think it would have hurt necessarily to tie up that loose end finally with something really trivial - e.g. Bryn promised faithfully to bring sandwiches and completely forgot, so they ended up having to go to the chip shop instead; and he's been ridiculously and disproportionately mortally embarrassed about his one-off lapse of order and control for all of this time!

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2024 03:47

James Cordon took a punt doing the late show in the US , even he didn't think it would work out !
Not sure how he got that gig , but he was popular. The Americans seem to like the English accent and he is a big personality type.
Must have had some good connections maybe ?
I like him , but it seems I'm in the minority ( especially on mumsnet )

Happiestwhen · 27/12/2024 04:56

Imagine having to put up with someone like Bryn irl!! Constantly clock watching, being scolded when slightly out of line, no sense of humour and being a total cringe - (the part in the nightclub with the handcuffs and doll , the whole football kit etc) Total joy sucker!
Omg what a pain in the ass!

Question...why is Bryn so cross about Gwen and Dave getting together??

Isn't Gwen his sister in law? His brother died so he feels like it's betraying his brother's memory if she gets a new partner.
