I do feel sorry for anyone who wanted to watch the finale but was waiting to see it at another time - the resolution is all over the news. Just heard their wedding vows on Radio 4’s The World at One.

It might have been kinder to give people a little time!

This is the reason why I 100% wanted to watch it when it was broadcast. I KNEW I would get spoilers before I saw it! (Even if not on the internet, someone would probably text me/WhatsApp me and say 'ooooh Smith and Nessa got together in the end then!?') So I HAD to watch it when it was actually on!

Crikeyalmighty · 26/12/2024 15:32

@BIossomtoes it's again south wales and Ruth is terrific in it - my H much preferred it to G&S

Thank you so much. I can’t wait to watch it. I sense a bingethon coming on!

Were Smithy and Co really 26/27 at the start of the series?

I’m trying to imagine a 27 year old Smithy going out with a 17 year old Lucy?

I always assumed that as Lucy was so young then Smithy l was maybe early 20’s? I imagined it would be an age gap where the girlfriend is still young in comparison but it was an age gap that wasn’t too far outside the realms of possibility?

It (kind of) goes the other way with Smithy and Nessa, as (IRL) Ruth is 12 years older than James - in spite of Nessa's claims to only be 29, but somehow also with 41 years' experience in the job!

just saw it on the BBC. 12.3 million! Impressive.
Probably because there was f**k all else to watch. Worst Xmas tv ever.

We get it. You didn't like it.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 16:06

Ruth jones was good in ' fat friends '
As was James Cordon
I know people don't like him , but his done well for himself ( probs why people don't like him )
It's the English disease to knock anyone successful

PullTheBricksDown · 26/12/2024 16:12

I'm also not sure why so many people felt the need to moan about how they didn't like it and have never liked it. Watching it wasn't compulsory!

ImRonBurgandy · 26/12/2024 16:14

I was hoping for references to dearly departed 2 Jags Prescott and Eddie Stobart.

PullTheBricksDown · 26/12/2024 16:17

Now rewatching it from series one and just got to Nessa talking about smuggling drugs with her second husband Clive 'if it wasn't for my relationship with John Prescott I'd still be in that jail now' 😆

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 26/12/2024 16:18

Re-watching! (Finale.)

Firstly, it looks as if all these years in the closet have negatively affected Bryn’s mood - he’s noticeably aggressive from the start. And also very wary of anything that might offer Gwen a wider perspective.

Secondly, after their first conversation outside Pam and Mick’s house - Nessa goes back inside but Smithy doesn’t. A little later he goes into the house seemingly wiping his eyes and he’s all frazzled and tense. Didn’t notice that first time round!

Reckon they'd finished filming before Prescott died. And think @HotCrossBunplease probably nailed it that they were wary of using any Charles / Camilla references in case there were any 'health developments' and it was either outdated or looked crass.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 16:23

Bryn is an odd bod
I did wonder if he was Stacey's real dad at one point , but not sure why as he is clearly gay and hasn't come to terms with it at all !

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 26/12/2024 16:30

I think Bryn just feel very protective of Gwen. I expect he made a deathbed promise to his brother to look after her etc. Also, Dave is no catch and has a shady past, to suddenly spring this on him is bound if unsettle him.

What I don’t understand is why Bryn comes in through the back door so often, he lives over the road, it would take longer to come round the back. I know in this episode he was clearly out in his bike but in earlier ones he’s come over half way through a shave. (I am also aware that it makes it more dramatic).

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 16:35

I think most people would be upset at anyone seeing Dave coaches !
The man is riddled ..

Goldenbear · 26/12/2024 16:39

I think it was pretty funny but the age depictions do annoy me, I'm slightly younger than the Gavin, Stacey, Smithy and Nessa (a lot younger) as in the actors and yet on the stag do they declare going to party like it was 2008 again, when hey are the foam party, they remark on the kids at the club and how they are not 16 anymore but there is no way they were 16 in 2008!

Goldenbear · 26/12/2024 16:43

Wonkypictureframe · 26/12/2024 11:09

Nessa is not meant to be any younger. She’s always been older than Smithie.

So why does Stacey ask if she is pregnant when Nessa tells her about proposing to Smithy all those years ago. If Nessa is supposed to be older she's highly unlikely to be pregnant.

It was a joke! As shown by Ness then saying 'it was 5 years ago' ie you'd know by now

witchycat2 · 26/12/2024 16:45

It would have been better if Gwen ended up with Pete and Dawn with Dave coaches IMO

You mean Stacey was joking? I thought she was seriously asking.

iwishihadaname · 26/12/2024 16:53

over rated show like the office and only fools

HotCrossBunplease · 26/12/2024 16:53

No, Stacey was seriously asking, the joke is that Stacey is well known for being a dimwit.

Back door is always open I expect so doesn't have to knock.

Some people have no business watching comedy,it's not a documentary 😉

LoafofSellotape · 26/12/2024 17:01

I've just started episode 1 again for the umpteenth time, 3 steaks Pam 😂

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 26/12/2024 17:07

Absolutely fucking fabulous, just watched it now. We loved every minute ❤️

Of course the cast looked older - it's been 17 years and that was the whole point of it all. I loved the fact that Smithy's friends all had issues with their bodies with gout, etc.

The references to older episodes was superb, the (obvious) fishing trip, the KRC (and corn on thecob), sugar tits, etc. Just brilliant.

We're going to watch it again and I bet I see at least 10 things I didn't spot today!
