Noel from Hearsay playing cards with her dad before her wedding to Dave Grin

The 2019 episode was way off the mark and felt like forced humour (I cringe in particular when I think back to the “Are you asking me to step into Christmas?” scene as an attempt to recreate the iconic Jon Barnes rap scene), but this latest one has left me desperate to rewatch the whole series from the start. It was brilliant (although I would have loved a hint of the nice Bryn)

Agree, really didn’t enjoy the 2019 special and wasn’t sure this would hit the mark. But it was so much better, genuine laugh out loud moments as well. Loved it.

i wouldnt have known Noel from Hearsay but John Prescot had a fantastic cameo appearance

Mylittlebobble · 26/12/2024 13:04

I'd be interested to know the viewing figures. It does seem to be the one must-see programme for this Christmas, if not for a couple of years.

Mylittlebobble · 26/12/2024 13:07

Ignore me - just saw it on the BBC. 12.3 million! Impressive.

Most watched Christmas show since 2008!

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 26/12/2024 13:10

I do feel sorry for anyone who wanted to watch the finale but was waiting to see it at another time - the resolution is all over the news. Just heard their wedding vows on Radio 4’s The World at One.

It might have been kinder to give people a little time!

She and JC were in The Constituent at The Old Vic all summer. I've always loved the fact that Smithy's mates are the cast of The History Boys from JCs past.
I was watching at the in-laws house so had to struggle not to be a weeping mess on the sofa. Need to watch it again on my own and have a good cry.
Rudi's kids! Taplow, Chingford, Brighton and Aldi!

I watched at the in-laws too, had to struggle to hold it together! They aren’t really fans of the show but they are originally from Chingford so they at least found that joke funny

I think people know that nowadays once it's out there there's it no avoiding it realistically, it was everywhere on social media as it was happening last night. In fact it's amazing there wasn't a leak beforehand.

I watch a lot of things on catch up but knew this was one to watch live for that reason. Dashed to get in front of the screen! Not just me I guess. The viewing figures will rise quite a bit when catch up from 7 days after is added on.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 26/12/2024 13:47

I did feel a bit mean yesterday informing family and friends that I didn’t want any phone calls after 8.45pm. Xmas Grin

(Not after the Masterchef Professionals finale debacle …)

Crikeyalmighty · 26/12/2024 13:50

@Paul2023 Stella is excellent - I actually preferred it to G&S . Similar humour -and a very handsome boyfriend!!

susiedaisy1912 · 26/12/2024 13:58

Just finished watching it and I loved it. Took me a while to get used to them all being older but after about 20 minutes it was like they'd never left us.

Sausagenbacon · 26/12/2024 14:04

Probably because there was f**k all else to watch. Worst Xmas tv ever.

I thought the running joke was that Nessa lied about everything and no one questioned it. Whether that was jobs she had, people she had met or even her age

So I don’t think you really know what age she is, regardless what she said

I think she was meant to be 42 at the start which would put her at 59 now.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 14:13

It has been dire this year for tv
I liked G and S and Eastenders , but the rest hasn't been great

Since the advent of catch-up TV being sold to us as a great, convenient facility, the broadcasters seem strangely determined to undermine it

So many spoilers, sometimes within hours or even minutes of the programme going out live.

I know it's nowhere near the same league of huge, long-awaited, one-off drama as G&S, but they do this every single time with Deal Or No Deal: make sure to ruin it for anybody who hasn't yet seen yesterday's episode and would otherwise have caught it on catch-up, but won't bother now as they've just deliberately spoiled it and told you what happened.

If they desperately don't want viewers to watch things on catch-up, I'm sure there's nothing forcing them to offer the facility in the first place?

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 26/12/2024 14:23

Exactly my feeling, @FizzyBisto - seems utterly pointless to have the facility.

Thank you. I’d never heard of and it’s on my NOW watchlist now. Loads of episodes to make February a bit more cheerful.

NorthernGirl1981 · 26/12/2024 14:51

Were Smithy and Co really 26/27 at the start of the series?

I’m trying to imagine a 27 year old Smithy going out with a 17 year old Lucy?

I always assumed that as Lucy was so young then Smithy l was maybe early 20’s? I imagined it would be an age gap where the girlfriend is still young in comparison but it was an age gap that wasn’t too far outside the realms of possibility?

BurntBroccoli · 26/12/2024 15:05

@Wonkypictureframe
Yes I think that Nessa's stories were all true.
She was clearly well travelled and very cultured.

LivingColour · 26/12/2024 15:06

Figgygal · 26/12/2024 11:18

Can't believe smithy has spent 5 years with that insufferable woman.
I enjoyed it apart from did their have to be another wedding/alter drama? And then the crazy dash in the bus across the field?
Loved Gwen and Dave
Apparently the Sonia actress didn't even tell her family she was in it which is amazing as it was a big part and she did it well. Hated her!!!
Might watch again later

The actress has shared a video of her watching the finale with all her family last and they didn’t know she was in it - and their reaction. Priceless.

HotCrossBunplease · 26/12/2024 15:17

I was surprised we didn’t get any reference at all to Charles and Camilla from Pam and Mick, especially with them now being King and Queen. I wonder if they were worried it might have to be cut if Charles’ health deteriorated.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 26/12/2024 15:31

I couldn’t watch yesterday so avoided everything until this morning when I watched it on iplayer.

I loved it. They got the tone just right. I had rewatched the series in the run up to watch it. I think the comments about them looking old are like when you watch something from years ago and think how young everyone looks. It’s the sudden contrast.

Mick’s speech was so moving, and the ending was wonderful.

I think Smithy has really low self esteem when it comes to women, see his relationship with Lucy. He is the kind who will put up with anything just to keep a girlfriend happy because he thinks he won’t get someone else. Sonia stayed with him because she had got so wrapped up in this wedding that she couldn’t see anything else.

The only thing I didn’t get was the ring Smithy found. I’ve forgotten the significance and she seemed to already have it on a chain.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/12/2024 15:32

@BIossomtoes it's again south wales and Ruth is terrific in it - my H much preferred it to G&S
