They got Smithy's name wrong in the vows.

Neil the baby's middle names were Noel for Nessa's friend from Hearsay. Also Edmund for Smithy's Papa Ed. They weren't Smithy's middle names.

So glad to see someone mention this as it was the only thing that riled me. I'll just have to tell myself that Smithy changed his name to match Neil the Baby's like someone suggested on here Grin

Apart from that I enjoyed it and thought it was a fitting finale. Definitely need to rewatch!

Fizbosshoes · 26/12/2024 09:10

I absolutely loved it
Literally can't believe Ruth Jones is 58, she looks amazing (as Nessa or herself)
I'm not sure why people looking/being older us seen as a negative thing....that's just what happens over a period of time...Confused
Pam talking about selling up when Mick died had us all in stitches!

Mylittlebobble · 26/12/2024 09:16

Yes, what I didn't understand is what is stopping the pair of them selling up and having fun with the money?

I agree with others saying about Bryn being less likeable in this episode.

Also, obviously didn't like the Sophie character but I did respect her for not going along with the stripper. Nice to see women sticking to their boundaries on TV.

femininomenon · 26/12/2024 09:19

My mum talking about selling the house when my dad dies (who is only 62 and perfectly healthy!!) is a regular conversation in our house so we all loved that part!

Paul2023 · 26/12/2024 09:27

Ruth Jones looks good for 58, I think she’s aged quite well and doesn’t look that much different from the first series.

Regarding Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb, they’re both late 70s and I think they both good for their age and still can clearly act.

littleburn · 26/12/2024 09:27

A small moment, but I loved the return of Mick and Pam's matching silky dressing gowns. Hers ankle-length, his ending mid-thigh 😂

Harping · 26/12/2024 09:30

Smithy’s mum was a good addition to the story. I don’t think we met her before? It explained why Pam and mick were such important second parents for smithy

She was invited to Neil the baby's Christening and she had to get a lift there with Pam etc.

Paul2023 · 26/12/2024 09:32

I was late to the party with Gavin and Stacey. Completely missed it when it started and it wouldn’t have appealed to me then. I only ever watched one or two episodes.

It was only a few months ago when me and DW randomly decided to binge watch all the episodes on Iplayer.

I think it’s well written and the casting is spot on. Only flaws were the fact Sonia and Smithy were not a believable couple and I always thought it wouldn’t be realistic for Stacy’s family and friends to do big group outings to Essex from Wales. But maybe that’s just me and people actually do that.

Pam Ferris ( Smithy’s mum) has been in it before , she was in an episode when Smithy and his sister were having a fight in a department store while he was getting a suit.

popandchoc · 26/12/2024 09:37

She also went to the christening as think Pam and Mick took her ?

Smithy took his mum and sister and Pam and Mick went in with them.

popandchoc · 26/12/2024 09:42

Ah that’s it I remember Pam not being happy about it !

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/12/2024 09:46

i found it difficult to watch due to how different older many of them looked

have to disagree with this, to me they all pretty much look the same, the only exception is Mathew Horne who sadly I don’t think has aged as well as the rest

Lavenderlights · 26/12/2024 09:51

I have been a fan since day one and the finale was just beautifully done. I only got chance to watch this morning and I’d read mixed reviews, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to think.
It included everything I loved about Gavin and Stacey and more! I’d cried atleast 4 times by the end 😭

Wonkypictureframe · 26/12/2024 10:02

I keep seeing comments that Mick looked frail. I didn’t think that at all! He looks like his age but perfectly healthy with it. I think it’s just seeing people look older and the slight shock of it. We see Alison Steadman all the time in other things so we’ve not needed the same adjustment for her.

MyOtherProfile · 26/12/2024 10:03

People who don't like how they aged, don't you think it would be kind of odd if they hadn't aged in 17 years? I know I've aged in that time!

Itisjustmyopinion · 26/12/2024 10:05

I enjoyed it but I thought out of the three Christmas specials it was at the bottom of the list. Surprised at the 2019 hate, I enjoyed that and have watched it twice in the last few weeks

I was the only person in my house that enjoyed it last night, everyone else was really disappointed and didn’t think it was as funny as they thought it would have been. That’s the problem with it being hyped so much

Loved the AMM cameo as the registrar as I love Motherland. She and James Corden were in a play together in London around the time this was being filmed in the summer so guessing he asked her to pop along

I agree. Larry Lamb looks good for someone approaching their 80th birthday, he didn’t strike me as the least frail.

VillageFete · 26/12/2024 10:05

I sobbed my heart out at some points! Mick’s speech, Neil the baby flying the nest; Nessa’s anguish was palpable.

Also laughed my head off at some points - Pete’s makeover 😭 Smithy throwing himself down the stairs, Nessa’s line about Gavin & Stacey being boring.

Overall, I loved it.

I can’t understand Sonia and Smithy’s relationship though. What would she have seen in him? That sounds terrible, I love Smithy, but we know him as an immature working class lad, not the type you’d imagine her to go for. She states he was paying for everything - Was his business thriving? Did she see money?

Willmafrockfit · 26/12/2024 10:08

loved seeing Smithy's mum,
she has narcolepsy,
keeps falling asleep
loved it when she turned up, How long does this thing go on for!

I think he's dying his hair which isn't a good look on any man his age imo.

Blimey Anna Maxwell Martin?!

She and JC were in The Constituent at The Old Vic all summer. I've always loved the fact that Smithy's mates are the cast of The History Boys from JCs past.
I was watching at the in-laws house so had to struggle not to be a weeping mess on the sofa. Need to watch it again on my own and have a good cry.
Rudi's kids! Taplow, Chingford, Brighton and Aldi!

Yeah she has, at Neil the baby's christening...
