Oh my - I've just realised that 'Harry' may well be called Harold Shipman!

captainPugwashh · 26/12/2024 01:10

The corn on the cob thing was a metaphor for sex.

I think Bryn started off nice and sweet but, having marathoned the show over the last few days, I noticed he definitely got more psychotic with each series!

Foxlover46 · 26/12/2024 02:29

Loved it , I don't get why people are saying they look so old , course they've aged it's been 17 years since they all started out

madamtav · 26/12/2024 07:21

Yes, they have aged-havent we all!

Actually thought smithy and Nessa have aged the best out of all of them- Corden has obviously had the Hollywood treatment but I thought Ruth Jones looked stunning as Nessa - not sure what it was but her hair and make up were beautiful .

sweetpickle2 · 26/12/2024 07:29

Nessa looked incredible in the last scene- does anyone know where her dress is from?

It's like people wanted them to get new, younger actors to play the roles 🤷

I'm not hearing that at all. I think it's more about seeing ageing very visibly. You don't see it so starkly with the people around you, as it's gradual. It's a bit of a shock and a sadness and a touch of curiosity about the ageing face. No one is criticising or judging.

Oh I didn't realise those were G and S's kids! I feel silly now.

VoyagerOfTheTeenYears · 26/12/2024 08:15

I thought it was great. Just missing some singing from the main cast members but they all did it in the final scene, we just couldn’t hear them and Neil the Baby was amazing and my DDs are now some of his new Instagram followers. I agree Uncle Bryn has got a bit too grumpy but that has been happening through the series so it isn’t new. Loved the corn on the cob moment and Mick’s speech and Smithy wanting his opinion at the altar. Great to see Rudy again. I liked that they had grown up. Thought bringing Dave Coaches back via Gwen was genius.

WinterCrow · 26/12/2024 08:24

It was worth watching for the Redemption of Dave Coaches alone.

Willmafrockfit · 26/12/2024 08:28

i enjoyed that so much more than the one 5 years ago
i found it difficult to watch due to how different older many of them looked
but loved the ending, very happy

Willmafrockfit · 26/12/2024 08:29

oh yes i missed Deano also, matthew Baynton

NorthernGirl1981 · 26/12/2024 08:32

Nessa and Smithy didn’t look a day older than the last Special 🤣

G&S’s children were definitely at the wedding - when they all ran off to go and try and catch up with Nessa, Stacey looked at Pete and said, “Look after the kids for me!” - or something to that effect.

I find it odd the girls were bridesmaid though, as generally the bridesmaids come from the bride’s side of the family/friendship group, and Sonia doesn’t strike me as the sort who’d want the daughters of a woman she barely seems to know and doesn’t seem to like. I can see why Smithy might have wanted Gavin’s daughters in the wedding, but Sonia doesn’t seem the sort to roll over and agree to do something she wouldn’t choose for herself just to make Smithy’s happy. It just didn’t seem realistic.

Sonia is such an unlikeable character isn’t she!!!!

For the first 20 minutes or so I really struggled to enjoy it and it just didn’t seem funny….but as the time passed I got hooked and drawn in!

Agree with others that Ness’s goodbye to Baby Neil was lovely, and I also loved it when Smithy told her what a good job she had done at raising him, how proud she should be and how he can so much of her influences in him. That made a me a little teary.

Mick’s speech also made me teary.

I tell you one thing that I wasn’t sure I liked… when the congregation were asked to stand up if they thought Smithy was making a mistake (or something along those lines) it seemed like it was Mick’s opinion whose mattered most, and if Mick didn’t think Smithy should marry Sonia, then he wouldn’t. All I could think was, “Your 16 year old son is standing up, meaning that he doesn’t want you to marry Sonia and he thinks that you’re making a mistake,” so isn’t that enough to make you reconsider? Isn’t his opinion the one that should matter the most? If Mick hadn’t have stood up would Smithy have married Sonia on the basis that Mick had no concerns about the marriage, despite the fact his son didn’t want it? I understand they were doing it to show how much Smithy respects Mick and probably sees him as a father figure, but I didn’t like how that meant his own son’s feelings didn’t seem to matter or take priority.

I thought the Role Play stuff was really silly. Stacey was always my least favourite character though so that probably didn’t help endear me to the storyline.

I missed seeing sweet Bryn.

I thought Nessa and Smithy’s wedding was lovey, and Nessa looked amazing!! I loved the fact they shook hands at the altar because they never kiss, but I did think in the final scene where the photo was taken, they would then be overcome with the urge to kiss each other, just to show us that alongside all their chemistry and craziness for each other, underneath they felt real love and affection for each other too.

But overall, I really, really loved it.

In fact, after me and my husband had finished watching it we went back to Series 1, episode 1, and started re-watching the series 🤣

I think it was a wonderful finale of a fantastic series! Well done to Ruth and James!

What do people think happened on the fishing trip?

I think it was a cold night, and while looking for food to burn, Jason fell in the lake leaving him drenched in freezing cold water. In the middle of nowhere and panicking, Bryn says he read something once that said hugging nude prevents hypothermia.

Of course, we will never know, but that's my theory!

I always thought the fishing trip was something not anything scandalous, just something they were over the top embarrassed about.

Jason saw Bryn naked in a few seperate incidents. We all know Bryn has ideas about the correct things to do.

So i think he stripped after he fell in the lake - because that's what you should do in the cold and you have wet clothes on - the wrapped himself in his sleeping bag., and got Jason to do the same. Then he spilt soup on himself so ended up sleeping naked. Jason saw him naked again.

Who is Harry?

G&S’s son isn’t he?

TheaBrandt · 26/12/2024 08:44

Highlights for me the conversation about their son and Smithy acknowledging Nessas role in him being a decent person and Mikes speech. Both really genuine excellent affecting scenes.

madamtav · 26/12/2024 08:46

@NorthernGirl1981 I think smithy recognised that Mick is truly wise and has so much life experience and knowledge of a long marriage and therefore his opinion carried more weight than Neil the baby's, as well as the fact that he is a father figure.

.... yeap!
And G and S's children are Cait(lin) Megan and Harri - obviously a reference to the Royal Family. Love all those little details!

This. Plus I think even without Mick he would have bailed but he was making sure Mick didn't have some reason to think it should go ahead.

PrimalLass · 26/12/2024 08:58

And Pam, saying how she would sell the house when Mick died and she got lover.
Just stupid writing.

I thought that was the funniest bit!

Willmafrockfit · 26/12/2024 09:02

loved that too, i quoted words similar last night!

when michael's gone
