I’m surprised that people found Sonia unbelievable. Have you really never known anybody so obsessed about getting married, everything being just so, hang the express, not really bothered about the groom?

I’ve come across this a couple of times. Once the groom came to his senses, once ended in separation 10 months later, but both women were very like Sonia.

Oh yes the bridezillas...

Is it me or is it not very funny

I found it very forced

Their daughters were the bridesmaids and Harry was in the congregation?

Yeah and Harry walked in with Pam and Mick...

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 10:26

They wanted a big reunion at Cardiff airport , but the authorities said no , so the dockyard was the place in the end ( probably easier to film there )

Mistressofnone · 26/12/2024 10:26

I can imagine Sonia went for Smithy because she thought he was 'punching' and would put up with her more than most men. Similar to Dawn & Pete.

PoloSusan · 26/12/2024 10:26

Could someone explain the owain Hughes joke !!!!!!

Ruth Jones looks good for 58, I think she’s aged quite well and doesn’t look that much different from the first series.

Regarding Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb, they’re both late 70s and I think they both good for their age and still can clearly act.

Ruth Jones looks good full stop. No additional age comment needed.

Oh yes the bridezillas...

Most of the details of Sonia's Hen night and wedding could have come straight from threads on Mumsnet.

Nessa and Smithy's wedding was fabulous.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 10:27

No idea about Owain Hughes either
Is it a play on words ' owing , owain ' or something?
Plus that fishing trip too , have to make up your own story there

Willmafrockfit · 26/12/2024 10:28

i loved the drunken party before the stag, looked so much fun

I know, people are obsessed with age for some reason, not just on here but everywhere, it's really annoying.

The Owain Hughes is to mess with us... it isn't a thing but they put it in the script to confuse people!

The Owain Hughes thing is a non-joke. It doesn't mean anything. The actor has had people asking him to explain it ever since.

The 2019 episode was way off the mark and felt like forced humour (I cringe in particular when I think back to the “Are you asking me to step into Christmas?” scene as an attempt to recreate the iconic Jon Barnes rap scene), but this latest one has left me desperate to rewatch the whole series from the start. It was brilliant (although I would have loved a hint of the nice Bryn)

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2024 10:34

I hate looking and feeling older , but it is part of life and people should embrace it more ( in my case , learn to live with it !)
We do live in an agist society though
Sad to say.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 26/12/2024 10:36

I thought it was fairly obvious that Sonia stuck with Smithy because, as an experienced plumber, he was earning more and more money. Which he was entirely willing to spend on her because he naively believed she brought the ‘class’ element to them as a couple. That’s why we heard that he paid for everything.

I imagine the utterly delightful Neil the Baby will be a zillionaire before he’s thirty. Aren’t we always saying here that learning a trade is a better prospect than Oxbridge?

coralsky · 26/12/2024 10:38

Loved it. Especially the party before the stag. Looked really joyful and like they were genuinely having a laugh filming it.

Some of the ageist comments on this thread are depressing. Shock horror - people do age.... Why do we even need to comment on it ?

Each to their own! I love the Step into Christmas scene.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 26/12/2024 10:42

In the whole episode one of my very favourite things was the shocking contrast between Sonia’s svelte friends - all dressed in clearly new full length Reformation type dresses - and the Stacey contingent, drably thrown together in dated printed midi dresses (not Nessa obvs). To me that was a more powerful indicator of difference than the stripper.

stonkytonk11 · 26/12/2024 10:42

I thought Ruth Jones looked stunning throughout the finale.
We saw Smithy's mum when she goes to help him buy a suit - for the christening? And Rudi and Smithy end up scrapping on the shop floor 😂

stonkytonk11 · 26/12/2024 10:43

I love the Step into Christmas scene from the previous special too...showed real warmth and love between Smithy and the Shipman's

Wonkypictureframe · 26/12/2024 10:44

That’s one of the few lines from 2019 that made it into our G&S quote bank.

Yes the contrasting approach to the hen night was brilliantly done.

I know, people are obsessed with age for some reason, not just on here but everywhere, it's really annoying.

I think it’s because she’s meant to be younger than that on the show, James Corden is around 46/47 I think , there’s an age gap in real life but they’re meant to be the same age on the show.
She plays a much younger part, you wouldn’t think she approaching 60 in real life. I think that’s all people meant when it comes to Ruth Jones age

I’ve never seen Fat Friends or Stella starring Ruth Jones, were they any good ?
