A final final episode!

Fingers crossed they can go out with a bang but not sure!

Loved it. The Byker Grove joke made me howl because that is legitimately one of the reasons I've never been paintballing 🤣

The byker grove joke was perfect. It's a conversation I've had with friends, and was absolutely spot on.

Paul2023 · 25/12/2024 23:43

Very well written ,even at the end I wasn’t sure if Smithy would marry Nessa but I knew he wouldn’t marry Sonia. So the ending was still a nice surprise.

Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon don’t seem to have aged that much compared to the rest of the cast.

Do foam parties still exist? I haven’t been to a night club since about 2009 so wasn’t sure young people of today still go to those things.

And funny enough Ant and Dec made jokes about that on this years I’m a celebrity!

Everythingaches · 25/12/2024 23:48

I commented they looked old, I think it’s just such a reminder to all of us about how quickly time passes and Larry Lamb just looked frail. It’s a nostalgic time of year isn’t it anyway when we all realise another year has flown by.

i did absolutely love it, not to start with but it got better.

Moll2020 · 25/12/2024 23:49

Absolutely loved the final show, I laughed and cried! I love living in Barry.

1AngelicFruitCake · 25/12/2024 23:50

I wonder if any of the cast are reading this thread 🤔
I think they spent ages going over criticisms from the last Xmas special and made the right changes.
2019 Dawn shouting 'scag head'
Smithy suddenly speaking in a ridiculously over the top way that just wasn't believable
(Although there were great moments)

This time they got it right. No overacting (or hardly), scenes played out nicely. Focus was shared out on the ensemble much better rather than being just about smithy and nessa.

I did feel uncle Bryn was going to come out and he seemed quite angry at times and inappropriate like with the stag do. I think this is in keeping with his childlike character, that others have grown up and moved on and he hasn't.

One of the best Christmas specials I've seen of a long running show.

sweetydahling · 25/12/2024 23:53

I can't believe we're getting an episode recap on the news 😂

That was so funny. Like the whole nation had been waiting!

I might have missed this being mentioned but I didn't get the corn on the cob reference. Can anyone enlighten me?

TheHallmarkedMan · 26/12/2024 00:01

I was amazed at the start of this thread that people weren't liking it, thought the cast too old, had too much work done etc.

I bet if everyone watches it again they'll be loving it from start to finish.

All the call backs were so clever. The taxi scene calling back to the big fight between G&S and the corn on the cob. Genius.

Neil the baby was stand out. I loved how they stuck with him from a tiny baby.

That last scene wasn't acted at all I don't think. That was just them. I adored it all.

In one of the original episodes there’s a scene where Smithy and Nessa talk about the corn on the cob as a euphemism for sleeping together, then abandon the KFC and go and do exactly that.

WingBingo · 26/12/2024 00:02

@MyOtherProfile it was referenced in an early episode after a kfc they all shared. Smithy and Nessa spent the night together and a corn on the cob was referenced then. It was implied that it was part of their sexual exploits that night, but never explained.

MyOtherProfile · 26/12/2024 00:06

Thanks @WingBingo and @sweetpickle2 I had completely forgotten that.

I loved the big fat sue in-joke, assume you all got that!

Daft in places, but I liked the ending a lot. I wasn’t convinced it was going to end happily tho. I thought he might marry that awful woman, and once they got in the bus I thought it might be involved in an awful accident.

No, I missed that. What was it?

I thought it was just the metaphor they used for wanting sex?

sweetpickle2 · 26/12/2024 00:15

Pam and Mick talking about their friend Sue who’d just been abroad for a weight loss procedure of some kind, and how she’d need a new nickname now @2025hello

GrimDamnFanjo · 26/12/2024 00:17

I was hoping Nessa would turn Smithy down, go to sea and then we'd see him 6 months later waiting for her boat to dock.
I preferred the ambivalence of the original series ending.
But I did think the Cossack dancing explanation was genius.

dollybird · 26/12/2024 00:25

Absolutely loved it, perfect ending. Loved the reference to Owain Hughes.

Turmerictolly · 26/12/2024 00:35

I thought it was a fitting ending and loved the Blackbird Beatles song, very poignant. I didn't like the Stacey/Gavin role play sub plot and thought Bryn's role wasn't quite right - not enough of the sweet Bryn. Dave Coaches and Gwen not believable but glad he was in it and good to see Smithy's mum and sister. Also missed Deano (Matthew Bayton). He's in a Midsummer's Night Dream at the Barbican so maybe he was busy rehearsing for that during G and S production.

Not as quick fire funny as a lot of the episodes but very satisfying.

Mistressofnone · 26/12/2024 00:40

Yep all of the above! Thought it was brilliant. The cossack imagery was so funny. Loved the pile on their dated sofa; Smithy snug in the bath; Dave Coaches; Biker Grove; Fingers' gout 😄

Noticed Gavin turning into wise Mick, the way he talks Stacey down.

Did miss Deano when the foam started but he wasn't part of the original gang in series 1 anyway.

Nessa 'you had your chance' - too right!

witchycat2 · 26/12/2024 01:03

A very minor point, but it's strange Gavin and Stacey's kids weren't invited to Smithy's wedding. It wasn't a childfree wedding (Rudi'e kids and bridesmaids etc were there) and presumably Smithy had been a big part of their lives being Gav's best mate. Even hangers on like Dawn and Pete were invited, along with Gav's in-laws Gwen and Bryn. They are also Mick and Pam's grandkids yet they were left with the neighbour in Barry.

I assume it's because having a flock of kids wouldn't have worked with the plot so well, but it's still strange nonetheless!

captainPugwashh · 26/12/2024 01:06

@2025hello when Mick said to Pam 'who'd have thought we'd be the last ones standing eh? And Pam responds 'well not just us! There's 'x and sue' (can't remember her husbands name), she's got back from turkey, she's still a bit tender gestures to her stomach but she's lost 2 dress sizes already!'

Paraphrasing but you get the gist 🙂

BESTAUNTB · 26/12/2024 01:06

I think they were at the wedding Witchy. The girls were bridesmaids and Pam talked to a fair-haired teenage extra whom she addressed as Harry.

They weren’t at the stag/heh the weekend prior.

Stacey arrived with the girls, they were the bridesmaids .

Their daughters were the bridesmaids and Harry was in the congregation?
