Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

Good point about Timothy not even giving his mother a passing mention.

Oh yes, good point, I’d completely forgotten that part

TooOldForThisNonsense · 04/03/2024 00:24

Poor Miss Higgins :(

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/03/2024 00:47

@Warmwoolytights

I was adopted in 1961, by 1969 I very definitely knew. Don't remember being told but I have ' always ' known, that I was ' chosen ' - their choice of explanation.

The reality was they got a phone call saying they were ' top of the list ' and a baby had been born, did they want the baby, then they were told the baby was a girl.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 04/03/2024 00:50

Timothy's mother probably doesn't have much use for a washing machine. Even a fully automatic one. And - nun hijacking aside - wasn't it intended as a competition for children to enter?

Just generally in the episode, the overall theme of course was adoption, but Reggie still spoke about his birth mother who passed. Tim’s birth mother never gets a mention!

I thought some of the stories in the episode were great, but it felt like the pacing was really rushed as they had run out of time and had to pack it all in. I would have liked far less boring Matthew and Trixie drama this series and far more Miss Higgins and her son/grandson, and more about the woman giving birth on the bus and her large family.

InMySpareTime · 04/03/2024 06:52

I did like Fred being "too ill" for the municipal firework display and miraculously recovering (great plan of Reggie's there) for the local ones.
That episode was back to the best of CtM except for the attempt at phone chemistry with Trixie and Matthew.
2 births and another just delivered, though Trixie could have done with wearing a mask for that birth. They seem to have quietly dropped the mask wearing.
I was half expecting Dr T to miraculously cure Victor.
Got me thinking though, are traditional Hindu outdoor cremations still illegal in the Uk?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 07:03

but i think the blonde nurse who went to church likes Cyril
Reggie was lovely
the episode did reduce me to tears as well, just like the good old days!

InMySpareTime · 04/03/2024 07:07

I went down a wiki rabbit hole about Hindu funeral pyres. Seems they have had the legal right to an open air cremation since 2010 but haven't yet found a suitable site as the open air must be within a building and by a flowing river.
Some sort of repurposed Franciscan monastery cloister would be perfect but I dare say they're a bit iffy about allowing Hindu rites.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 04/03/2024 07:45

I’ve just read that it’s been renewed for a further two series. That will take it to 1972 I think….?

Bunionbabe · 04/03/2024 08:49

I'm probably alone here but I think Helen George is a terrible actor. Doll-like and winsome with a little girl voice.

You are not alone.

So glad Joyce is being supported against the blackmail. It was handy the other newbie was trying out the pentecostal church without Sylvester seeing her there.

I think she will end up with Cyril so it is part of a longer story line.

Mischance · 04/03/2024 08:57

Me too - very wooden.

Flamme · 04/03/2024 09:03

I was surprised Sister Julienne didn't bother putting water on Trixie's burns as even superficial ones are very painful.

I was more surprised at Trixie having a hot bath. Ouch!

Bunionbabe · 04/03/2024 09:03

She is in a different league from Jenny Agutter and Linda Bassett. Down not up, BTW.

How old are Angela and May supposed to be? I was wondering if they might include an 11+ storyline, as that was the school system at the time. One gets into grammar and the other doesn't or something.

The 11+ was largely phased out by the mid 70s, apart from areas that retained grammar school. I suspect Poplar would have gone comprehensive quite early so with luck they'll avoid that complication.

Just googled and there was a grammar school in Poplar which became comprehensive in 75. It depends how old they are I guess.

Angela was adopted in series 3 so I think she’s 10, not sure about May but assume the same.

Thanks

Warmwoolytights · 04/03/2024 09:21

These are Turner children. We’d have no secondary modern angst here. I’m shocked at the thought.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 04/03/2024 09:30

Do you think it would be 'Och Angela you can learn to type and that will be jolly useful because Turner medical Inc. always need a secretary'.
Or daily drilling and constant talk of a second chance via the 13+ until the poor child has a breakdown?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 09:33

yes why didnt May want to be a doctor?

Warmwoolytights · 04/03/2024 09:43

I think they’d both sail through the 11+ with flying colours.

PuttingDownRoots · 04/03/2024 09:45

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a nurse though... May has 7 or so strong female role models that are nurses, including her own mother. Why wouldn't an 8/9yo girl aspire to be like them?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 09:46

because her father and her brother are doctors.
