Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

Was Angela adopted too?

Yes. From a young, unmarried mother iirc.

I agree that was a lovely episode. I thought the Rev looked like Tom too and also wondered if they meant that episode for Mothers Day.
Was Victor's adoptive mother dead as I felt for her missing his death if not.
I thought Trixie was going to drink the meths! I thought bloody hell that was a rapid descent into becoming a meths drinker!

I was surprised Sister Julienne didn't bother putting water on Trixie's burns as even superficial ones are very painful.
So glad Joyce is being supported against the blackmail. It was handy the other newbie was trying out the pentecostal church without Sylvester seeing her there.
I wish they still showed the nuns singing Compline in the Chapel.
Lovely episode though.
Think I'll start watching the old episodes from the beginning now.

I too thought that Trixie was going to drink the meths..I was thinking: ‘blimey that’s quite a leap!’ 😳
I hate to say it, but there was a scene tonight when Sr Julienne clutched her middle (think it was when she’d made Sr Veronica and Sr Monica Joan apologise to each other) - as if she was in pain..I wonder if there’s going to be a terminal illness storyline for her in the next season? 😢

Was Angela adopted too?

Yes the Turners were told they couldn't have children so adopted Angela then fostered Mae then had a surprise pregnancy for the little boy (who's name escapes me).

I was thinking that. And the speech was practically a eulogy.

Brilliant episode, although hate the Sylvester storyline.

When Cyril was talking at the start of the sermon I though Lucille was going to walk in

Just about dried my eyes 🤧. What a fantastic end to this series. A fantastic programme and well done everyone who worked on this. I salute you all! ❤️

Ulysees · 03/03/2024 22:04

@Tarkan that's awful 😞

Really sad one tonight.

I’m a few minutes behind but was expecting the Turners to be asked if they wanted to adopt the baby boy too.

Me too. Next series 😉

PinkFrogss · 03/03/2024 22:13

Was going to say I hope we see more of Harry next series, which got me thinking….

The jokey discussions about Timothy being gay on previous threads? A doctor and dentist would be quite unstoppable pair, might even uproot doctor Turner Grin

PinkFrogss · 03/03/2024 22:15

Although on the subject of Timothy I’m surprised there wasn’t any reference to his own mother, given the theme of the episode.

Teared up at Reggie and his biscuit tin too. Actually disappointed there’s not another episode next week. More of this in the next series please!

I don't think we will every see Lucille again.

Unless they give her a head transplant. I wish they had done that when she first left and Cyril went back to visit her. She she have arrived back in Poplar pregnant (or he should have stayed in the Caribbean). It is so out of character for her to have just written off her marriage.

It must be hard when one actor in an on screen marriage wants to leave and the other wants to stay but Lucille would not have left Cyril and she isn't likely to get the baby she craves from the other side of the Atlantic.

When it became clear that the actress wasn't coming back they should have replaced her with another actress, given her an off screen death (plane crash/boat sinking on the way back to England?) or had Lucille return (unseen) pregnant then not return to work but be talked about, seen from a distance, behind etc.
It just isn't believable that she would leave her happy marriage.

PinkFrogss · 03/03/2024 22:28

I mean she managed to get pregnant while remaining socially distanced from Cyril, so whose to say they’re not capable of a transatlantic pregnancy too Grin

I like Cyril as a character but it’s so stupid to keep him in the show with no reference to Lucille. Especially due to his religious views and possibly cultural background, traditional marriage is likely to be very very important to him.

They should have killed her off then paired him up with the new blonde midwife

The Turners had Teddy before they fostered May...

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/03/2024 22:30

Loved this episode, Reggie choking up got me 🥺

😂

You certainly did…did you keep your hat on? Do tell.

Oops, quoted the wrong post, that was meant for misshiggins

Netaporter · 03/03/2024 22:32

I loved this week’s ep and it was the last in the series. Shame the other 7 were not as compelling.

Agree St Timothy spouting off about antibiotics was utterly ridiculous - I rarely left the dr’s in the 70’s without banana flavoured antibiotics as a child. They were absolutely a panacea…

Absolutely loved the non-judgmental friendship between Phylis and Millicent 🥰

That would have to be one hell of a letter! But they do say the pen is mightier than the sword.

Ah yes, was someone else was supposed to be fostering/adopting her when the batch of Chinese 'orphans' was brought over and the Turners took her when they didn't turn up? Then once she was settled the short term arrangement became long term.

No it was Angela, Teddy and then May

DelphineFox · 03/03/2024 22:48

How old are Angela and May supposed to be? I was wondering if they might include an 11+ storyline, as that was the school system at the time. One gets into grammar and the other doesn't or something.

Clawdy · 03/03/2024 22:51

The Miss Higgins story was incredibly sad, but her lovely son was very forgiving about her giving him away.

Angela was adopted in series 3 so I think she’s 10, not sure about May but assume the same.

For me, the cast is so big now we jump from person to person but the stories barely have any time to develop naturally. I'd love to see some of the minor characters given less screen time because it all kinda feels a bit hectic at the moment!

MadeOfAllWork · 03/03/2024 23:36

Good point about Timothy not even giving his mother a passing mention.

Warmwoolytights · 03/03/2024 23:48

I also enjoyed this episode more than others although found the mother of the year thing emetic. However, I sucked it up.

I was though twitching away at Angela being told she was adopted. From what I know it was incredibly common for children not to find out till they were adults that they were adopted, and not always by being told either. Both the family friends we had who had adopted children didn’t tell them until after they were 18, and this was in the 80s/90s. It caused real family tension. A family member adopted in the later 90s and the advice was a lot different by then but I do wonder how common it was in 1969 to tell children of Angela’s age.
