Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

I also found it unbelievable that May's mother would have had a say, and given the circumstances surrounding her fostering, and it all happened with such lightning fast speed.

Though I suspected they might go down the route of secondary drowning after May's symptoms didn't improve. Not that I have any medical knowledge, but they used a similar plot device in another program I watched a while ago (The Affair I think).

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 04/02/2024 23:49

It looked absolutely freezing on that beach!
A lot of overacting from Dr Turner & Shelagh in this episode- it was comical at times. Liked the storyline with the young couple. Not sure what’s happened with Trixie.

Gooseysgirl · 04/02/2024 23:51

I'm wondering is all this financial drama their way of writing Olly Rix out of the show? Although I've no idea how they'll do it... maybe send him overseas or something

OnceUponATeabreak · 05/02/2024 00:27

To me it looked like May had drifted out of her depth by clinging to the lilo. The seaweed getting caught on her foot caused her to lose grasp of the lilo and then panic in the water.

Parents visiting hours for children's wards were same as for any other ward, it was very strictly observed back then so the Turners wouldn't have been there overnight.

Trixie is usually very perceptive and she's seen a lot of people under pressure in the course of her work, so she should know the signs immediately in Matthew but seemingly doesn't. I can only think that she probably doesn't want to admit to herself that the fairytale is broken so soon, before she's even really had chance to experience it.

FiveFoxes · 04/02/2024 22:42

I thought the lilo might be a problem as soon as they said the word. Children being swept out to sea is what the word "lilo" makes me think of. This is possibly because there were several incidents that I can't remember but we're well known in the news (possibly before I was even born).

As for the secondary drowning and the photo eye problem... They have both come up on MN many times as suggestions to threads so not surprised so many of us knew about them!

However, if your child had near drowned and needed to be revived earlier in the day, even if you know nothing, the fact that they were poorly in the evening would make you seek medical help surely?! You might not know about secondary drowning but you might think they has swallowed something...!

I didn't find it unrealistic that the Turners went home leaving May in hospital. I think that was quite usual in those days.

Finally - I thought pre school was a newish thing. When I was young (and I wasn't born until way after 1969) it was called nursery school I think. Does anyone else know?

Yes, I was born in 71 and it was called play school or nursery school, not pre school.

DelphineFox · 05/02/2024 00:55

I'm sorry we won't get to see the beautifully furnished Barbican flat now.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/02/2024 04:08

Placematking.

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 04:54

I really thought May was adopted too and/or that the mother would have no say in any events.

RosaMoline · 05/02/2024 06:45

I too, was under the impression that the Turners had formally adopted May. I was sure I’d seen them celebrating it in a former season, but perhaps not!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/02/2024 06:48

just seen 2 episodes of series 13. so catching up, not felt the enthusiasm until now with my dd home for weekend.

LimberlostLark · 05/02/2024 07:04

They were going to adopt May but her mother refused to sign the papers so the Hong Kong adoption project became her formal guardian in the UK and the Turners is 'just' where she lives.

That was meant to be the happy ending of a previous episode because May's mum did not take her back to HK, as she'd been threatening to do.

Placemarking

finding it really unbelievable Mae’s birth mother has much of a voice in this situation!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/02/2024 07:13

Rosa yes it was the palladium. Utterly fabulous.

Both my brother and I were in hospital him in 1975 aged 5 and me aged 8/9 in 73/74 and strict visiting times and definitely No parents overnight. My sister was in hospital as a baby 1968/9 and my mum has to leave her. It’s awful when you think about it.

First I’d heard of parents staying overnight I think was around 82/83 when my cousin was in overnight seems ridiculous to think that now.

Perhaps he’ll get the job doing meals on wheels he was trying to get Trixie to do. He’ll be written off as too busy delivering mince to appear on screen.

If rumours are to be believed I’m sure Olly is hoping he isn’t killed off and Trixie given a new love interest.

My cousin fought to stay overnight with her son in the early 70s. But he was on life support at the time, and it meant sitting in a chair (and keeping out of the way).
When I was in hospital it was strict visiting hours (tonsillectomy). And my Mum didn't even get visitors when she had hers out (WWII), but having read Roald Dahl she was lucky to have a nice clean hospital and anaesthetic.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2024 07:29

@FiveFoxes it was Play school when I was little in the early 80's. Pre school seems later.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2024 07:39

@MollyButton my friend had his tonsils out in the 50's and remembers his mum coming in once a week. He was in for a while. When my sister's friend had her tonsils out in the 90's my mum, thought it was ridiculous that her mum stayed over night. I've had to explain to my mum several times how important it is that parents stay over. Only since covid have we stopped both parents staying.

SoundTheSirens · 05/02/2024 07:40

I would love for Trixie to discover the semaphored-from-the-rooftop-of-Nonnatus-House financial ruin storyline by sneaking a look at Matthew’s giant ledger herself after noticing how stressed he is, understanding fairly swiftly what it means because she’s not stupid and confronting him about why he hasn’t said anything earlier.

But of course it will be another scene where the now comically stereotypical empty-heated spendthrift splashes out on something costing £££ and Matthew finally loses his rag with her. Because we can’t possibly have Trixie hanging on to any of her previous character growth when there’s an Important Saintly Man Character to be centred 🙄

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/02/2024 07:45

I wonder if Matthew will take his own life? Can’t cope with the financial ruin? Not sure if that would fit in with the comfortable CTM though.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/02/2024 07:46

My bet...
May is taken away. Mother comes to UK on another visit, realised how much May misses Turners and Angela, and agrees to adoption. Big Street party to celebrate.

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 07:51

I was in hospital for two weeks in 1983, aged 7. My parents didn't stay over night except perhaps the first night when I was very ill, and there were strict visiting hours as well. They did visit every day, but I also remember nice things like a nurse playing Sindies with me.

I wondered this but that would be pretty dark for CTM.

Is Trixie definitely not leaving? I agree with pps who said the writers have really done the dirty on her character, they could have left her happily married and we just never saw her husband. Maybe even given her a baby of her own.

LimberlostLark · 05/02/2024 08:16

I was in for about a week in the early 90s (91/92) and by then it must have changed.

Overnights were still by exception and my Dad stayed the first night after my operation - on a chair by my bed. But that no other nights - maybe that was for his comfort though Grin the chair could not have been an easy sleep.

However, I remember him being there a lot during the daytime too. It was him that took me to the loo, got me food, washed me etc.

Outside of that, the rest of my family visited during set hours.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/02/2024 08:16

Yes will have to see what next week brings. Trixie has had a tough time. Just let the woman be happy!

LimberlostLark · 05/02/2024 08:21

If Trixie had been left with the dentist - who was her best match, imo - then she could have been happily ever after with a step child old enough that she could still work and we hardly ever see the dentist, except the odd storyline if the actor was free. He was in healthcare so would understand the demands. He was a dentist so would be well off enough for Trix. And he clearly had a social conscience because he rebuilt that women's teeth for free in one episode.

If she loses Matthew, than I demand Christopher-the-dentist comes back!
