Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

As an interim measure, until the showrunners spot your post and make the prequel, try the book A Nurse in Action. Not midwives and nuns, but a young nurse working in a London hospital during WWII.

MikeRafone · 07/03/2024 13:22

The recent series are an absolute shitshow in comparison. We didn't know how good we had it

real life compared to fiction

I wonder what the real Trixie would make of her life after reality faded to fiction?

DancingOnMoonbeams · 07/03/2024 13:55

@MrsMitford3 The unexploded bomb episode when the tb starts made me feel more than ever I def want a prequel-thinking in the east end in WW2. Would love young Sisters Julienne, Evangelina and Monica Joan.

I agree with you, I think that would be an ideal period to do.

AnImaginaryCat · 07/03/2024 14:12

Going back to during WW2 would be fascinating. Midwives assisting women as they give birth during the blitz in bomb shelters or mothers coping with their homes being destroyed when they had new born babies; and with young children being evacuated or dealing with children they didn't evacuate. Generally concentrate on midwives and mothers during the war.

I think it'd be fascinating!

My version features Nurse Crane of course. With a side story of her and the young pilot. I'll figure out how to work Miss Higgins in if you all demand it.

LimberlostLark · 07/03/2024 14:23

Just saying I would also love a prequel! Anything from 1920-1945ish. All pre NHS following the work of the nuns and the stories of women giving birth without state medical care support but with the community and charity support.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/03/2024 14:30

Does anyone remember a the series from about 10-25years ago set in a London hospital in 1900s? Casulaty 1900, something like that. Think it was based on hospital records.

LIZS · 07/03/2024 14:32

The Royal?

Serenityandsmiles · 07/03/2024 14:48

A prequel would be awesome, it would have to include Srs Julienne, MJ and Evangelina. I would, of course, like to see Nurse Crane and Ms Higgins. Would Dr Turner's father have been the GP for Poplar?

Remember the episode where Sr.Julienne met up with an old beau who was dying? It was such a poignant episode.

kazzaD66 · 07/03/2024 16:07

The problem with any prequel would be that, if it was written by the same team as now, it would be the same old rubbish but just set in an earlier time period, with 21st century ideas and values transposed on to it, which would probably be even more jarring than it is for the 1960s of recent series!

Yes, all based on diaries and hosptial records of the time. I think they did about 4 series - Casualty 1905 to Casualty 1909.

True. I want it written by someone who doesn't impose 21st C values, someone who does decent research, someone who thinks through the consequences of the plots so they aren't full of holes, someone who isn't afraid of the harsh reality of that time so doesn't shy away from them and someone who will center women and not worry about the fact that 95% of the screen time is taken up by women/babies rather then trying to shoehorn men in.

I guess I want a unicorn to write it.

Then I would be the only person to watch it because everyone else would think it was too bleak and depressing because there would be a fairly high mortality rate - because there was.

It never going to happen is it?

The last series was particularly jarring as it imposed 21st century values whilst also being ridiculously old fashioned for the late 1960s.

Edited

Totally agree.

No, no, no - I'd be writing it. With all your input too of course.

Nothing else would do!!

I have covid and am currently watching from the start.
So so wonderful...

Sobbing over Alec Jesmond's death and the mums all singing for him.

The unexploded bomb episode when the tb starts made me feel more than ever I def want a prequel-thinking in the east end in WW2. Would love young Sisters Julienne, Evangelina and Monica Joan.

Hope the CTM show runners lurking on here...

I hope you feel better soon. I've got it as well and I'm watching House of Games today and turns out Helen George has been on it this week.

MrsMitford3 · 07/03/2024 18:38

@Tarkan Not feeling brilliant-first time I have had it, how are you?

Although a great excuse to rewatch CTM.
Sister Monica Joan currently buying a Christmas tree-guy at the lot said "you delivered my baby-boiling hot and 2 doodlebug raids" and gave her half off.

I def have too much time on my hands but I how brilliant would the prequel be...

Oh no, well done on missing it until now though and I hope it's gone soon for you. This is my 4th time. I have health conditions so it always hits me hard and 3 out of the 4 times have been March/April which is weird.

I need some feel good TV so I might do some CTM from the start but I don't want to make myself cry too much either. It was always so good for that early on. 😁

MrsMitford3 · 07/03/2024 19:04

@Tarkan honestly it's worth the tears.
Not even my first re-watch and I still am so moved by the brilliant stories!

Hope you feel better soon!

Damnyoureyessir · 09/03/2024 08:12

I’ve started rewatching series 1 after reading some of the comments here. What on earth? It’s like an entirely different programme!! So much better and less saccharine.

Soubriquet · 09/03/2024 09:35

Maybe us mumnetters should band together and create Call The Midwife: a war prequel

We can then make sure it’s to our liking Grin

PuttingDownRoots · 09/03/2024 09:38

Can we have Sister Hilda in her WAAF days coming across the nuns and it planting the seeds for her future?

Fred, his first wife and daughters?

The Spanish lady from S1, with her 25 children... when she only had a handful?

PuttingDownRoots · 09/03/2024 09:40

Maybe Reggie as a child as his Mum (Ivy) navigated bringing him up?

MrsMitford3 · 09/03/2024 09:42

wouldn't this be wonderful?

Now this is a thread I'd like the Daily Mail to pick up so Heidi Thomas can see it!!!!

MrsMitford3 · 09/03/2024 10:58

And young Violet and Bert running their shops...

One thing that has really struck me on this re-watch (and it is not my first) is how much softer and nicer Violet is compared to her current rather brash persona.

I appreciate she has evolved from a lady who runs a ribbon shop to Mayor but interesting to see how they evolved the character!
