Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

Just generally in the episode, the overall theme of course was adoption, but Reggie still spoke about his birth mother who passed. Tim’s birth mother never gets a mention!

True

Warmwoolytights · 04/03/2024 09:50

Her mum is a nurse so definitely believable.

My mother left school at 16 in the 40s when the options she felt she had were teacher/secretary/nurse. Her father didn’t believe in higher education for women. She did one of those with little interest and later moved into a job she far preferred but always regretted how limited her choices had been.

As a result she was totally determined that I would go to university and when I wanted to be a midwife told me that I should be a doctor instead. I wasn’t good enough at maths or physics for that and have spent a lot of my adult life wishing I’d become a midwife, but my mother had the very best of intentions. Just that being a doctor isn’t necessarily the better option.

I'm probably alone here but I think Helen George is a terrible actor. Doll-like and winsome with a little girl voice.

I can't decide if she acts like she does as it's her stage character, or if that is her real voice and that's how she is.

I'm also cringing a bit at how she and Ollie are a couple in real life (and they're playing out this slushy behaviour on screen too!)

She's supposedly very good at singing and is currently in some West End musical (because CTM is shot months in advance of us seeing it.)

IndominusRex · 04/03/2024 09:53

First episode in ages that’s made me cry.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 09:53

they are not a couple in real life surely, she is with the ex vicar

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 09:54

oh i have just read that helen george's marriage to the ex vicar is over, that is sad.

ExactlySo · 04/03/2024 09:55

I thought the appearance of Mis Higgin's son and then his death all in one episode was too contrived.

Yes, it makes us see her in a new light, but it was clear he was just shoe-horned into the story to do that and wasn't going to continue as a character (although his son will.)

Giggorata · 04/03/2024 09:55

I think it's more true to the attitudes at the time that May doesn't aspire to being a doctor - yet.
There wasn't a lot of feminism in general discussion and The Female Eunuch wasn't published in the U.K until 1970/1.

So sad about Miss Higgins, but now she has Harry to dote on.
I thought Victor went downhill very fast, with no chance of dialysis, but I suppose that then episode wouldn’t have concluded tidily

Words fail me about the awful Trixie storyline.

It was over AGES ago.

She and Ollie have been 'walking out' (as they say in CTM for some time- 'comforting each other' according to the Daily Mail as his long term relationship ended at the same time as her marriage.

A drama in its own right!

ExactlySo · 04/03/2024 10:00

I can't get my head round the Trixie story line.

Most of the other characters are nurses /midwives first and their relationships / personal issues take 2nd place.

But with Trixie it's all about her and her marriage, her drink problem, her out of control spending, her airs and graces, and her job seems less important.

I thought that when she went to America (last night) for a few months that might be her leaving the show, but clearly not.

Her accent is also totally out of place and contrived.

When Miranda hart was in CTM she did have a plummy accent but it sounded natural.

It was a bit of a rushed story, as was Trixie's this week, but as you say, it leaves room for a relationship with Harry.

upinaballoon · 04/03/2024 10:22

Has Trixie's accent changed over the years? Who's been watching Series 1 lately?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 04/03/2024 10:26

Isn’t Trixie’s character meant to be posh? HG went to Edgbaston high school (just looked) and think dcs ex deputy head went there and very plummy. Would need to rewatch from the start or watch her on strictly again to see!

commonground · 04/03/2024 10:32

Angela took that adoption news very stoically, luckily for the Turners.
Teddy must be wondering when it's his turn for 'the chat'. I would say there are an awful lot of trust issues lying in wait for the teenage years, but maybe they'll all take their cue from St Timmy and breeze through.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 04/03/2024 10:35

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 09:33

yes why didnt May want to be a doctor?

The Turner men will have unlocked all the levels and 'finished' doctoring before she reaches university age.

Wait what? She's dated both her on screen husbands?

She would always have known about May (Mae?) though so possibly the concept is less of a surprise. Teddy could well be expecting the same news himself unless they address this early on.

PuttingDownRoots · 04/03/2024 11:03

Have they ever clarified how old Tim was when he lost his mother? He was 9ish at the beginning?

ExactlySo · 04/03/2024 11:30

MorrisZapp · 04/03/2024 10:54

Wait what? She's dated both her on screen husbands?

She married one, left him and is now dating her on screen husband.

The former vicar wasn't her husband on screen (he was married to another midwife who died.)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2024 11:37

but trixie did have a relationship with the vicar, briefly

PuttingDownRoots · 04/03/2024 11:39

Trixie was engaged to the vicar.

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 04/03/2024 11:39

Not that briefly, was it? They were engaged for some time and planning the wedding.

ExactlySo · 04/03/2024 11:40

PuttingDownRoots · 04/03/2024 11:39

Trixie was engaged to the vicar.

In the series or real life?

He was married to one of midwives who died- was it Helen?

At which point was he engaged to Trixie?

Warmwoolytights · 04/03/2024 11:42

He was engaged to Trixie a series or so earlier. She realised it wasn’t going to work when it looked like he’d be posted up to a deprived bit of Birmingham. And they broke up. But then he wasn’t and reappeared and got together with Barbara.
