Started promising but by the end of it I was asking myself wtf did I just see, complete waste of time with very very unrealistic "twists".

SirChenjins · 30/12/2023 23:06

I’ve just watched it tonight and really enjoyed it! Not the sort of thing I normally watch but thought it was really good.

It's not supposed to be realistic.

verityswims · 31/12/2023 02:21

After such mixed reviews I wasn't expecting it to be great. It wasn't bad. Visually appealing, and elements of Brideshead and The Talented Mr Ripley.

He didn't have a semi did he??

If he did its the smallest and floppiest semi I’ve ever seen.

PuffyShirt · 31/12/2023 11:28

I read speculation that he might have worn a prosthesis for the end scene.

I gather it was not. If it had been, surely he’d have chosen something a bit more er, impressive!

LadyMargaretDevereux · 31/12/2023 14:45

I absolutely loved it and will happily watch it again, now I know where it's heading and after the 'reveal' at the end. I think because of the setting, the audience expect it to be coming of age, academia, nostalgia, etc, but it twists away from that and where you expect Oliver to be in awe of the posh folk, you see at the end that maybe he is but also wants to destroy them. Their strange form of naivety opens them up to that, as they can't imagine someone who will be anything other than appreciative of them (until they get bored and kick them out). If Oliver had played it how they expected, he would soon have been out by the end of the summer. I don't think Oliver had the plan from the beginning, he just played it by ear and grew to hate them the more he got to know them. Barry K was perfect for the part as he can look really quite beautiful at times, but also odd or misfit looking when alongside the conventional good looks of the Cattons.

I was so disappointed. I found it vile at parts and gratitutitous.

Such a shame because some of the party scenes were wonderful and the shots of the house and fashions

TheaBrandt · 31/12/2023 16:08

She needs to do a prequel film now about the parents!

Explaining their 20 year age gap.

TheWalkingDeadly · 31/12/2023 20:20

Plot too ridiculous. Would take too long to get the property. Unlikely felix would have necessarily picked him.

Rollergirl11 · 31/12/2023 22:41

I watched with my two teens. None of us were especially impressed. Liked the soundtrack. The party scene with MGMT Time to Pretend was awesome.
I heard that Barry Keoghan improvised the grave fucking scene.

Explaining their 20 year age gap.

I can think of a few million explanations.

Actor playing wife 43, actor playing husband 65.

GonksAreNotJustForChristmas · 01/01/2024 19:57

I thought Oliver looked quite nice in his antlers. Am I weirdo?

Nutellaonall · 01/01/2024 19:57

As someone who likes to look at a the little details. The fashions were not on point. There was a girl in layered fine gold jewelry ( the one Oliver kissed at u I) That been a thing the last few years but certainly wasn’t in the naughties. Also isn’t “class of” indicative of your final year not your first? So wouldn’t it be more like 2003?

Nutellaonall · 01/01/2024 19:59

20 year age gap between rich lord with a castle and a glamorous wife not exactly difficult to explain/ believe!

Summasolstice · 29/12/2023 00:11

It felt like a faux intellectual indie film for people that don’t watch independent intellectual films. There’s so so much better out there

Your post is very funny. Independent intelligent films. We are so thick for enjoying it. I do watch all sorts of films.

Not all films are meant to be realistic. I've just watched Silent Night with Keira Knightley. I quite enjoyed that too.

I noticed the jewellery fail too

Jifmicroliquid · 01/01/2024 21:16

It was shot in something like 48 days which I thought was phenomenal considering some of the large scenes such as the party one. The amount of setting up and extras that were required for those scenes alone…

Great film! I haven’t enjoyed a film so much in a long time.

No!

RocksOn · 01/01/2024 23:03

The actor playing Oliver is a chameleon.

I thought him extremely unattractive, my friend thought he was gorgeous 🥴

In the opening scene, I assumed he was about 40! But he then looked younger (still not standard undergrad age though).

Rollergirl11 · 02/01/2024 10:43

Barry Keoghan is 31. Jacob Elordi is 26. I don’t find Barry attractive at all but he is undeniably charismatic and generally plays fairly menacing roles. He was in the latest series of Top Boy playing a psychopath.

raspberrycardigan · 02/01/2024 11:00

What I found interesting was Oliver became more attractive and self-assured as the film went on - as if he was an actual vampire (as EG has said the film is about) of beauty and charisma.
