Again, I enjoyed it. I tried to explain to my DH about the few (meant to be) shocking scenes because he hasn't got time to watch it.

It seemed weird coming out my mouth then saying it was a good film. I found some of the characters attractive.

GonksAreNotJustForChristmas · 29/12/2023 19:49

I'm going to watch The Talented Mr Ripley again.

I'm going to watch The Talented Mr Ripley again.

DS (20) watched The Talented Mr Ripley the day after Saltburn - I think he preferred the former.

IcedPurple · 30/12/2023 08:56

maybe against the class system itself that sizes up people like Oliver and firmly puts them in his place.

But Oliver, despite his tales of woe to Felix, was solidly middle class. He came from that naice house in the suburbs and his family seemed to be quite well off. So while he might have felt out of place around the upper classes, even at Oxford he could have avoided those types had he wanted to. But he actively sought them out and tried to ingratiate himself with them. Or just with Felix?

That's why I say it's hard to know what his motives are. I don't think he was a well drawn character, unlike the bland faced stone cold sociopath Tom Ripley. And as I said above, the fact that the actor is about a decade too old doesn't help.

MokaEfti · 30/12/2023 09:48

I watched it as a black comedy and enjoyed it. I loved all the country house novel/film references. Did anyone else think there was a nod to Atonement, with the scene where they're lying by the water? With Valencia lying on the jetty thing?

MokaEfti · 30/12/2023 09:49

I mean Venetia not Valencia 😜

Pebble21uk · 30/12/2023 09:57

@MokaEfti Yes, absolutely - I noticed that.

Notellinganyone · 30/12/2023 10:07

@Teddleshon - totally agree. Specious twaddle with absolutely no redeeming features. Made me really cross.

Dolma · 30/12/2023 10:24

I was intensely, and perhaps irrationally, annoyed by the fact that Emerald Fennell put so much effort into recreating the music and culture of 2007 (I haven't heard anyone called a minger for so long I had forgotten the word), but forgot that the summer of 2007 was one of the wettest summers ever known.

raspberrycardigan · 30/12/2023 12:41

FitAt50 · 29/12/2023 18:41

It was set in 2007 and by my checking all of the music was out when it was set. I loved it.

It was set in 2006. There was a welcome banner in the opening scene:

"Welcome class of 2006"

Yes, and the welcome banner was a complete Americanism for an American market. I don't believe they exist at any Oxford college!

MistletoeRegrets · 30/12/2023 13:24

Welcome class of 2006

I did find that hugely incongruous and not aimed at UK viewers!

"Class of..." is also an American phrase. I've never seen it used in a British uni, certainly not in Oxford 17 years ago!

Newbutoldfather · 30/12/2023 13:32

‘Low’ was released October 2007, definitely too late for the movie.

i don’t remember ever being formally welcomed as a year group at my Cambridge college, but I went about 20 years earlier, so that may have changed. All I remember was assembling in the fellows’ garden for the matriculation photo.

wutheringkites · 30/12/2023 13:44

@raspberrycardigan

It started in Autumn 2006 so most of it would have taken place in 2007.

I feel like the wtf moments were a really cynical way to get people talking about the film, and judging by my tiktok feed it worked

It's one of those films that I mostly enjoyed but is ultimately shallow and forgettable.

A film about posh privileged people directed by a MEGA posh person with very little charm.

Rosumund Pike was good though. What was the point of the Carey mulligan character?

SPOILER -

She was a character similar to Oliver, another so called friend they had all got bored of so wanted rid of. They weren't even bothered when she died. It showed just how shallow the family was.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2023 18:53

I loved it!🤣

Was coming on to say the same about Poor Dear Pamala , showed how dispensable the whole family saw people and how they would see Oliver in time too !!

Summasolstice · 24/12/2023 21:35

I was concerned about mud getting in his foreskin

I’m still trying to work out if I liked it. I don’t think so. It felt like it was trying really really hard to be edgy and clever and not getting there. Was a bit ‘6th form’

I lolled at your foreskin 😂

Yes.

GonksAreNotJustForChristmas · 30/12/2023 20:14

There is some boring shit out there do I liked it. Just watched Silent Night which is different too.

raspberrycardigan · 30/12/2023 22:13

wutheringkites · 30/12/2023 13:44

@raspberrycardigan

It started in Autumn 2006 so most of it would have taken place in 2007.

I couldn't figure out the timing. Then the sister said to Oliver, You've only known him six months. I guess it was pretty loose.

Overmylimit · 30/12/2023 22:33

I was at uni in 2006 so this film just reminded me how old I am now 😂 Oliver gave me the creeps from the outset and Jacob Elordi is almost too good looking like if someone AI generated a man that's what they'd look like.

Don't think I'd watch it again but love Richard E Grant and Rosamund Pike, they should be in more films together!

mnahmnah · 30/12/2023 22:46

I really loved it. I didn’t look at my phone once while watching it, which says something! I can’t remember the last time a film grabbed my attention like that. The soundtrack is brilliant, I was mid-20s in 2006 so it reminded me of all my nights out!

The shocking scenes made me laugh more than anything. I totally watched it as a dark comedy and loved the characters.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2023 22:52

I enjoyed it more watching it the second time.

I also didn't look at my phone at all, or make a cup of tea!
