@Rollergirl11 I hadn't made the connection that it was Barry in Top Boy. The young Irish man!

MaggieNextDoor · 02/01/2024 11:19

I really enjoyed the film, the only scene that made me shudder was the bath water one. I loved the way the down trodden working class scholarship boy manipulated the family so very well.

Reminiscent of The Talented Mr Ripley in places.

I felt very sad for the auburn haired woman with tattoos (poor dear Pamela?) who was swiftly ejected from the kind and caring family once they were bored of being her saviours.

I really enjoyed it, so much so I sought out Emerald Fennel’s other work and watched Promising Young Woman yesterday. Well worth a watch. Re Saltburn I thought the grave scene was Oliver loving Saltburn, nothing to do with Felix. I had guessed where the film was going towards the end and did wonder if the proof was really necessary. It might have been better to leave the audience wondering rather than tying it up neatly.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2024 11:43

We both enjoyed it teens did too though they watched with their friends not us thankfully! . We had a lot to talk about with them afterwards- good work Emerald more please!

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2024 11:47

Dh basically was the main character initially (working class boy at Oxbridge) and he said what was missing were the “normal” group in the middle who were state / private but not public school educated - the main character would have fitted in with them perfectly! Though that would have ruined the film! So the only friendship options available were the mental aristos or the maths geek.

Giggorata · 02/01/2024 11:49

I thought it was excellent and Barry Keoghan in particular.
I won't go on about the Shakespearean elements and nods to mythology, the subversion of Brideshead expectations, etc.
I found it visually appealing, too.
I didn't notice the doppelgänger; I will look out for it when I rewatch.

I just watched Promising Young Woman too and was blown away!

verityswims · 02/01/2024 12:11

I had to rewatch the doppelgänger scene as I definitely missed that @Giggorata

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/01/2024 13:08

Hang on, what was the doppleganger scene?

But the 'down trodden' working class thing was an act.

I’m aware of that

mnahmnah · 02/01/2024 13:29

I keep thinking about the father dying - is he the only one that didn’t involve Oliver? Did I miss an explanation of how he engineered that too?

Rollergirl11 · 02/01/2024 14:02

Promising young woman is immense. Far better than Saltburn.

What was the doppleganger scene? DD says the film/soundtrack is trending on TikTok at the moment so I think it’s done well since its release on Amazon Prime.

I presumed he killed himself as Elspeth said it was a shock and surprised it didn't happen sooner.

I don't know about better ,it's different and brilliant, that's stayed with me a very long time!

he wasn’t working class though, he just pretended.

dingledells · 02/01/2024 14:25

and I’m sure he could have seeked out other state educated dc but he was aiming higher.

dingledells · 02/01/2024 14:30

I've just watched Silent Night with Keira Knightley. I quite enjoyed that too.

ooh I liked that. They were all so horrible but I still felt sorry for them at the end.

verityswims · 02/01/2024 14:46

While Venetia is talking about doppelgängers, and the person who died shortly after seeing one, we see Felix's doppelgänger outside walking past the window.

I'd never have noticed it if it hadn't been pointed out!

mnahmnah · 02/01/2024 16:37

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Yes, that’s what happened - but Venecia supposedly did, which was engineered by Oliver. All of the deaths were. I just wondered if he had any involvement and I missed it

I'll have to watch it again!

Shoppingfiend · 02/01/2024 21:04

Great film - if you have no idea what to expect. Kept me glued. Didn’t know anything about him being a vampire but did wonder at the Victorian type font used for the titles.

He was no where near close to their level of wealth though and I bet a lot of state educated students feel out of place at Oxford.

Brides head with a sprinkle of the talented mr ripley thrown in
