I thought it was a really playful look at the class system-the upper classes with their special ways of knowing what is what and that you ask how you like your eggs done and how they ultimately tend to see them selves as superior but it all got inverted in this because who runs off with the spoils? The working class lad who knows how to cheat, lie and murder, survival of the wiley. It was a very well done dark comedy in my opinion and Fennel did a greta job on it.

Mmm. The most accurate bit was the way everyone loves a posh boy, or posh girl. Not for the money really but that lack of care of what anyone else thinks of them.
Its alright people saying they don't give a shit but the constant whining about "shaming" and judging" give them away.
I thought the parents weren't particularly well characterised . Posh people are bonkers but they aren't stupid.

Some are 😉

Loved loved loved loved it. Reminded me of The Talented Mr Ripley.

A fantastic critique on the upper classes.

the attention to detail was phenomenal. Red Ray bans were everywhere in 2006!

the only plot hole for me is surely Oliver would have realised they weee driving towards Liverpool?

great Easter egg of Felix walking pay the window when they were talking about Doppelgängers

OwlWeiwei · 04/01/2024 23:17

I waas going to watch it then DS listed in graphic detail some of the scenes he thought I might not enjoy and I decided he was probably right!

It sounds horrendous.

foxlover47 · 05/01/2024 05:55

I love Barry K , he was great in top boy too although not in it for long and love/ hate he was well known for being the boy who "shot the cat "!
The end scene was glorious !!
The Bath scene makes me gag still thinking about it !!
And I agree he looked striking wearing the antlers

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/01/2024 06:24

We chose to watch it over Christmas as I had understood it to be an updated version of Brideshead.

I loved it, especially the Talented Mr Ripley vibes. However, I really wish we hadn't watched it with my 81 year old mother and her partner. Some scenes had me squirming.

It’s not at all, none of the scenes are truly that bad - unless you’ve lived a very sheltered life!

The worst part for me was the runny eggs scene. I cringed myself inside out.

Teddleshon · 05/01/2024 08:19

The first thing he would have been told when he entered the breakfast room was that he should order his eggs and everything else is in the chafing dishes.

I thought some aspects of the depiction of the upper classes were fairly accurate (Rosamund Pike’s cutting remarks and way of speaking and Richard E Grant’s childish enthusiasm) but the vast majority was ridiculous. People would sit down to lunch discussing what a success their party the night before had been - the party at which their only son and heir was found dead?! And nobody has a fleet of glove wearing uniformed staff like that in their country house - absurd.

The depiction of Oxford was also ridiculous and the “twist” could be seen a mile off. I did laugh a lot in places but overall did not rate it at all.

Shoppingfiend · 05/01/2024 08:29

I thought he ordered fried eggs easy over - so flipped over so top is cooked but was offered fried eggs unflipped.

Curlewwoohoo · 05/01/2024 08:31

I watched this not knowing what it was - dh's colleague had told him it was funny! Omg, well I was pretty horrified! Could not sleep!

MumofSpud · 05/01/2024 08:34

I thought the 'notorious' scenes were unnecessary and the ending felt rushed

I loved Rosamund Pike's character and would like to see her in a spin off (prequel?)

MistletoeRegrets · 05/01/2024 08:51

I think you may have missed the point of that scene, @Teddleshon (and perhaps of the film)! It wasn’t intended as a documentary, rather as a sardonically heightened / exaggerated portrayal of the deflection of grief. (The stiff upper lip, blown up to absurd proportions.)

And did you know Jurassic Park didn’t even use real dinosaurs?! Absurd!

I can't imagine watching it with my Mum, what did they think of it? 😂

Teddleshon · 05/01/2024 09:43

@Badtrampoline this was the equivalent of having dinosaurs smoking cigars and playing croquet - a ridiculous depiction which undermined the whole story. Talented Mr Ripley did it a lot better!

MistletoeRegrets · 05/01/2024 09:46

I can't imagine watching it with my Mum, what did they think of it?

I’m curious, @Overmylimit - did you feel your mother might be unfamiliar with sex and nudity?

Overmylimit · 05/01/2024 09:54

Not at all more that I just don't think she would understand it.

Hippyhippybake · 05/01/2024 10:23

Having sex with a freshly dug grave, drinking semen from the bottom of someone else’s bath and the scene with menstrual blood are a hell of a long way from just “sex and nudity” and I’m happy I find those scenes horrible to watch.

To me the film ultimately because it wasn’t clear what the Director was trying to achieve - the depiction of the upper classes was clearly a silly parody and yet we were expected to take other aspects of the film seriously. It just seemed confused.

MistletoeRegrets · 05/01/2024 10:34

But the scenes were meant to be horrible to watch, @Hippyhippybake - that’s not a bad thing in a film, surely?

If anything I found all the so called shocking scenes somewhat tame. EF has a distinct, absurdist aesthetic, and the film was visually arresting as well as comedic - more like a play than a film, but fairly superficial entertainment.

mnahmnah · 05/01/2024 10:39

I’m not sure ‘realistic’ or tame were what Emerald Fennell was going for! I love it even more for all the absurdity, characatures, lack of realism. Bloody good fun.

Badtrampoline · 05/01/2024 10:43

Treating people like toys has always been a stereotype of the rich.....thats basically the premise of every Jane Austen novel no?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/01/2024 10:49

Overmylimit · 05/01/2024 09:30

Well, we sort of ignored it! 25 year old DS was also watching it with us, so he had the mortification of sitting through it with his parents and grandparents!

Hippyhippybake · 05/01/2024 11:10

Sorry but I found the grave scene in particular gratuitous and offensive.

Thank you. I am intrigued so might watch it after all. DSis loved it and she is normally quite squeamish. I liked the trailer.
