Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

Also did anyone notice this one: When Duncan Muir excitedly drove off to Balmoral to photograph the Princes - he drove off in a Volvo with a 2001 number plate... In 1997!

You're mistaken about this I think. I've just gone back to look and he drives off in a J plate Volvo. According to this site that makes it a 1991 reg.

Really enjoyed the first 4 episodes. I was in my early 20s when she was killed and remember it clearly. So sad.

OMG, there are adults so young they don't remember the old number plates 😭

@Angrycat2768 that makes me feel so old!

I really liked the Fayeds in this

I found their story heartbreaking. I actually couldn’t remember if Dodi had died too

The real footage was a great touch, as a reminder of the time

Really? As depicted here, Mohammed Fayed tipped off photographers about where to get paparazzi photos of Diana, manipulated her to go to Paris when all she wanted to do was get back to England to see her children, then engineered the trip to the Duke of Windsor's house causing her to miss her timed phone call with her sons. He also pushed Dodi into breaking off his engagement. I felt very sorry for him when his son died, but I didn't find him likable.

NorthernAttitude · 20/11/2023 17:25

Am sure most of it is total fantasy but the bit when she had her last phone call with the boys had me in tears. Rights and wrongs aside, it seems pretty clear she loved her sons and they her. What a loss for them.

Apparently the conversation was very short as they wanted to go and play. I thought it was really touching that they did something more with it. I doubt they will ever watch it, but I bet they wished they could have that conversation again.

I thought it was really touching that they did something more with it. I thought it was awful and mawkish actually.

Yeh so it fit into 4 awful and mawkish epiodes perfectly

Really? I thought they were both awful and without them interfering Diana would still be alive.

MAF came across as completely controlling and very manipulative, he was only concerned about power and ambition.

Diana managed to swap being controlled by the RF to being controlled by the AFs imo.

Harry said years ago. - if I could have that phone call again I would stay on the phone forever.💔

Good god, you're joking? Dodi's father was portrayed as such a horrific bully that I couldn't actually believe it - it just seemed far too black and white. I've just watched episode 3 and was spluttering with irritation about him throughout.

The ghosts and the Disney-mom portrayal of Diana were the only negatives. Apart from that, it's really very good with great acting all round.

The actor that plays Al-Fayed Snr is extraordinary and looks just like him.

He really does.

Elizabeth Debicki looks nothing like Diana but captures her very well I think. She comes across as a bit caricaturish at times but then Diana was a bit of a caricature!

Dominic West is too macho and slick for Charles, who has always been slightly fey and effete. He's doing his best, but just miscast. I think it's better when they employ less well known actors for extremely famous people, but Netflix see 'The Crown' as their prestige show so prefer to hire big names.

All in all, as others have said, it's gone downhill from the Claire Foy glory days. Then it was a historical drama with beautiful costumes and sets, a portrait of a bygone period. Now it just seems a bit tawdry and gossipy, no matter how high the production values may be.

I really don't like Dominic West as Charles.i much preferred Josh O'Connor.

I much preferred Josh's portrayal of Charles, though I think Josh rather more handsome than Charles would have been.

LBFseBrom · 21/11/2023 11:31

I think Dominic West is extremely credible as an older charles. He has the voice, mannerisms and facial expressions off to a tee.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/11/2023 11:33

I think people need to get over it not being Matt Smith and Clare Foy anymore. Yes they were fantastic but there’s nothing wrong with Olivia Coleman or Imelda Staunton - in fact o think they all have given good performances reflecting the Queen at differing stages of her life. I’m not sure what more people want.

OK that was me.

I am 50 btw so I absolutely DO remember J plates. I remember when A plates came out and used to be a bit of a geek with number plates.

I misread this one when watching. I have just rewatched and the plate is

J301 ENP

That is strikingly similar to current plates and I must have misread the J3 as JE, which would make it a 2001 plate

So I stand corrected 🙂 but I feel the need to respond and point out my GenX status 😀

JSMill · 19/11/2023 19:49

@Passepartoute yes I'd forgotten all about that. I guess that's partly because the media chose to bury the negative things they did. I will never forget a newspaper article in 93/94 about her going on a trip to Spain and being mobbed by photographers as she had by then given up her security. It said that for someone in her position to give up her security and make herself vulnerable like that was irresponsible. That turned out to be very accurate sadly.

We have Martin Bashir to thank for that telling her her security detail were spies for HMQ, just so he could push her to be just paranoid to give an offense interview

Horrid little man

Olivia Colman usually plays Olivia Colman. I think she was by far the weakest of the three QE’s because I never believed in her as the character.

If she wasn't popular there wouldn't have been anywhere near the reaction there was.

The press and the public are two different beasts.

Had she lived, her popularity may have waned, who knows.

I remember it well and the press were REALLY turning the tide on her before her death. She was heavily criticised for the extravagant holidays with random billionaires, the petty acts of sticking it to the RF and the whole innocence act. The Panorama interview pissed a lot of people off.

Aftwr her death the press gaslighted us all into thinking they loved her all along.

Harry has actually spoke about the last phone call he said he was slightly annoyed that she was away or so long and it was a fleeting call because he was having fun playing with his cousins, and he’s never forgiven himself for that
