Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

I think he - West - has too much confidence and not whiny enough. Too street!

Luddite26 · 21/11/2023 13:21

Just being pedantic @VivaDixie
But 2001 plates were the last of the old plates Y reg and 51plate they didn't do 01 plate!

But good proof that they do their best to get things right.

VivaDixie · 21/11/2023 13:24

Ah yes of course @Luddite26 (and i was just overexplaining!!)

I had forgotten about the 51 plates being the first.

Luddite26 · 21/11/2023 13:36

@VivaDixie My first car was the A reg 1984 no seatbelts in the back!

I think people need to get over it not being Matt Smith and Clare Foy anymore. Yes they were fantastic but there’s nothing wrong with Olivia Coleman or Imelda Staunton - in fact o think they all have given good performances reflecting the Queen at differing stages of her life. I’m not sure what more people want.

People are just saying they think other actors have been better.

I also happen to think CF has been the best Queen and Matt Smith by a country mile the best Phil – I wasn't a fan of his before, but IMO he was a revelation in this.
OC was a bit too wry, or knowing, or something, for the role. Imelda S is playing her very cold and imperious, which I don't quite buy. I like Jonathan P as Phil at the moment though.

Dominic W is just doing a (bad) impersonation of Charles with his overdone jaw thing and poor attempt at the accent.

Luddite26 · 21/11/2023 15:16

It still makes me smile when I think of the scene when Matt Smith/Phillip springs himself onto the bed when he realises bedroom relations with Claire Foy/QE2 were back on I think at the end of season 2. That was real TV magic.

TeamSleep · 21/11/2023 15:54

I enjoyed these recent episodes but it really has been all about Diana for so long, I find it hard to believe that nothing else of note involving the royal family happened in the 90s but that’s what the series would have us believe.

I so agree. Both Olivia Coleman and Imelda Staunton have been brilliant. If they'd tried to keep Claire Foy and age her, it would have been absurd.

I remember it well and the press were REALLY turning the tide on her before her death. She was heavily criticised for the extravagant holidays with random billionaires, the petty acts of sticking it to the RF and the whole innocence act. The Panorama interview pissed a lot of people off.

Aftwr her death the press gaslighted us all into thinking they loved her all along.

I remember also a lot of mockery over things like those pictures of her watching an operation, gowned up but dripping mascara into the wound. And it used to be a bit of a standing joke that, after any major tragedy, the Royal Family had to be quick off the mark because Diana would be there as soon as she could, doing photo opportunities beside hospital beds.

cyclamenqueen · 21/11/2023 16:25

She wasn’t the first or the only member of the Royal Family to visit AIDS patients either. Princess Margaret visited The Lighthouse, she had many friends in the gay community and lost some close friends and the children of close friends at the height of the epidemic. She took her young adult children with her but not the cameras.

of course the publicity that Diana brought was much needed and broke down barriers , but it’s untrue that the rest of the family were heartless brutes.

I was at University during 1991-94 and still in an era when on a hungover Sunday afternoon we would read the papers.

Or I would be at home in the holidays reading the sheet and tabloid papers.

They were obsessed with Charles and Diana for years and years. From what I can remember nothing seemed to overshadow every petty drama.

I seem to remember Tony Blair getting in after getting rid of John Major and D'ream not impressed a politician used 'things can only get better' as a political statement.

A few band feuds.

The early 90's were historically boring.

HurdyGurdy19 · 24/11/2023 17:12

The 90s historically boring? OMG, I totally disagree

Genocide in Bosnia and Rwanda
Launch of the Hubble telescope
The Gulf War
LA riots and world reaction to the murder of Rodney King
Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president, and apartheid ended
Google was "invented"
Columbine school shooting
The Berlin Wall came down

And probably many other significant events around the world. Definitely not historically boring.

Edit - actually just seen that you said "early" 1990s, so some of the above hadn't happened. But I still think the 90s were significant 😆

BSE, Dolly, Channel tunnel

ChristmasIsCome · 24/11/2023 17:43

@HurdyGurdy19 i hate to be fussy but the Berlin Wall came down late 80s. You are right though of course there was lots happening in the 90s. History is about to repeat itself with the landslide labour win in 1997. Lest we forget.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 24/11/2023 17:47

Few new countries in Europe.

Fight!!!!!!!! 😂

I think the border crossing was opened by the East German government in the very late 80s, but the wall came down in the very early 90s

Zamzamzamdeedah · 24/11/2023 17:58

Wallcame down 89,Germany reorganised in 90 iirc

oh right - so the other way round to how I remembered it!

Zamzamzamdeedah · 24/11/2023 18:06

I just googled and you probably remember the dismantling of it rather than the revolutionary fall. If that was showing heavily in news I can imagine it would embed as the fall easily

ChristmasIsCome · 24/11/2023 18:10

I’ll fight you if you want by I’ve had half a bottle of wine so might be a bit lairy 🤣

I ordered a kebab 1 hour 45 minutes ago. The place is a 10 minute walk away, but I was being lazy. When I ordered it, they said an hour.

The website is now saying another 45 minutes.

Sod the wine lairyness - I am HANGRY!!! No contest 😂😂

Just watched all four episodes and wow I found it really moving. Didn’t expect to, knowing the story but the boys… The two actors playing the princes were excellent too - little Harry’s face at the funeral. I didn’t mind the ghosts so much but maybe just Charles and Diana would have been better. Elizabeth Debicki was outstanding. I feel guilty though at the thought of the princes watching it - what a weird life. And us all watching it.

I volunteered for London Lighthouse back in the day, and, if I recall correctly, Margaret was their official patron but wasn't very active whereas Diana was a regular visitor and got to know many of the residents. I'll never forget the fierce press presence when Diana, who'd been out of the public eye for a time, chose Lighthouse's 10th anniversary as her first public appearance, since stepping away.

We stood in reception listening to the utter mayhem when she pulled up. A sudden riot of men jostling to get her attention. She got in the door eventually and visibly relaxed as it closed behind her. She seemed delighted to be back.
I can't imagine how hellish that must've been to live with. I really don't understand why anyone would want to be in the public eye.
